lehigh university brown and white vol 89 — no 25 :•:%•:•:•:■»»«%•.•:-:•:•:.•.•:•:•:•:■.•:•:•:-:•:•:.■:•.•.•:• bethlehem pa tuesday december 6 1977 215-866-0331 gridders win 39-30 by kathy mitchell the class of division ii east met the class of division ii west saturday in front of 10,500 hysterical cal davis aggie fans covered by fog an aggie steam engine that added its own fog and ilie abc cameras when the fog lifted the sun was shining on lehigh as the engineers proved the more balanced team winning 39-30 and moved one step closer to a national championship the engineers will now travel to witchita falls texas to take on jacksonville state in the 1977 pioneer bowl quarterbacks mike rieker and mike moroski lived up to the pregame hype of an aerial battle as the pair combined to throw the football 71 times the rieker-to steve kreider combo also did not b&w photo by glickman \ mover — lenny daniels shows a strong determination as he gallops past a hard blocking tom stine n route to a l.ehigh gain against cal-davis it was this type of teamwork that gave lehigh a big victory and a shot at the national championship next saturday engineers keep on rolling b&w photo by glickman one mob e head ( oach john whitehead it was a ureal game rosse report knocks plaza choice by ed bogucz although the administration has stated that the proposed plaza highrise best serves to meet the future housing need a report written last august by joris rosse former director of physical planning called the project a poor third choice to other residence possibilities instead of pursuing the plaza project the university should renovate additional homes in the warren square area and convert an abandoned south side factory into a student apartment building the report stated ilosse also recommended in the report that the university make every effort to move towards the purchase and renovation of the birkel estate a group of 18 homes opposite the univer sity's brodhead avenue parking lot purchase and renovation of the off campus buildings could be financed over a 20 year period for close to the same amount as the university would have to subsidize housing in the plaza project over the same period according to the report the conclusion is clear the report stated le.iigh can lease 200 beds from plaza for 20 years and end up owning nothing or it can purchase and renovate buildings with 200 beds and after 20 years own them completely for approximately the same annual cost rosse was fired nov 29 by eric ot tervik vice president for planning several administrative sources have in dicated that rosse's housing report as well as related events following its distribution seem to have been the last straws in a series of personality clashes between the two men ottervik said sunday however that the report had nothing to do with his dismissal rosse was fired for a host of other reasons ottervik said he would not elaborate on the reasons for the planner's dismissal last week ottervik said rosse's firing was based on his performance rosse has claimed that he was dismissed because i spoke my mind on planning issues sometimes his opinions did not support decisions which had been made by the administration rosse ex plained rosse said he believes all alternative solutions to any problem should be kept open until a final decision is made his see rosse page 9 the entertainer 88 w photo by hulsman iraee mall rocked fridav night at the billy joel concert as hm fans contributed to the university's fastest sellout ever j oe g,,t al least six full standing ovations during the show and played four encores the student activities council turned a 1900-$2ooo profit on the event see story page 4 and concert review page 7 grade-handling committee finishes processing study by ken bandler the faculty's committee on handling of grades has completed its study of grade processing at the university its 13 recommendations are designed to close the current open loop process of han dling grades and will be implemented this semester the report is summarized in a letter sent to all faculty members today by jerry king chairman of the committee and professor of mathematics the committee found the existing grade handling system to be open loop in the sense that the instructor who originates the grades has no role in the reporting of grades to students or in the recording of grades in traiiscripts the report stated the committee recommended that each instructor verify each grade that he has given at the end of each semester it also recommended each department maintain a file of instructors grade books in a secure manner the university provost established the committee last summer in the wake of the see ford page 12 see glading page 8 inside tuition increases p 5 academic climate p 6 wrestlers win p 12
