77-78 by ed bogucz a 305 hike in tuition and the largest increases in residence charges in the university's history were ap proved friday by the board of trustees for the 1978-79 school year the residence increases approved by the trustees will raise housing rates between 125 and 75 per year depending upon campus location a 30 increase in dining service charges also was approved without the substantial increases in residence charges the reserve account for residence and dining operations might run out of money within two years according to a report given to the board by university treasurer john woltjen funds from the cost center's reserve account have been used to cover recent losses experienced by the self-sustaining operations deficit predicted woltjen's report to the board also predicted the university would experience a deficit of approximately 13,000 during the current fiscal year a surplus of 19,113 had been budgeted for the current year the university has suffered only two budget deficits in the past 47 years in 1933 and 1969 last year the university experienced a surplus of 15,000 in the last five years surplusses of up to 568,378 have been realized no quorum the trustees met at the university despite friday's crippling snowstorm which virtually shut down the university approximately half of the trustees missed the meeting because of the storm and the board met without a quorum present all decisions made at the meeting will have to be ratified by the entire board in april at the trustees next meeting according to university president deming lewis the 305 tuition increase brings tuition to 4,130 last year tuition was increased by 275 and room and board by 125 projections exceeded last april elmer glick then university treasurer told the trustees that tuition for next year probably would have to increase 275 over current levels as opposed to the 305 hike approved by the board friday glick also projected in april that room rates might increase by 75 and board by 50 the 125 to 175 residence increases approved friday were needed to preserve the integrity of the residence halls operation according to woltjen's report wol'jen became treasurer last semester 160,000 deficit projected woltjen's report noted that the residence and dining operations lost 149,929 during the 1976-77 fiscal year and projected a deficit for the cost-center in excess of 160,000 for the current year the deficits are substantially draining cost-center reserve funds to the point they could be non-existent within the present level of operations at some point during snow cripples east coast but university stays open by lee ann lusardi the winter's worst storm caught the university by surprise friday curtailing most campus operations and causing some confusion as to whether classes were cancelled the university was declared officially open by university president deming lewis but the lack of an organized communications system led to conflicting reports on the university's status campus police under the impression that classes were off did not unlock academic buildings for 8 a.m classes an unidentified administrator called radio station waeb in allentown to announce that university classes were cancelled but a later call from the university retracted the statement lewis made the decision to remain open after receiving opinions from represen tatives of principal university operations vice president for administration richard spriggs said administrator's views on the subject were mixed he noted i don't think that we should call of classes ever lewis said sunday the university can never close as a whole we have to keep the dining halls and research labs open and should try to keep the libraries open if people can make it to campus the ought to come meanwhile many students went back to sleep friday or went to classes only to find cancelled classes due to professors inability to travel university provost albert chooses faculty students to review films by jerry miller a student-faculty committee has been established to review the student ac tivities council sac film series program according to william quay dean of students this is not for censorship quay said last week the committee composed of three faculty members two ad ministrators and an unspecified number of students will review the program in hope of establishing aesthetic goals and guidelines for the film series the establishment of a blue-ribbon committee to study the issue was discussed in a letter presented friday at the university board of trustees meeting we need some o the best minds on campus from all segments of the campus to analyze evaluate and formulate principles which will guide us in creating a policy for all of
