residence configurations announced by david lee director of residence operations lee said 25 of the women will be placed in singles presently there are only nine singles in drinker plans call for 16 doubles to be converted to singles lee said the women will be housed in drinker sections 4a 4b and 38 singles are currently available to upperclass women only in trembley park lee explained the number of beds on the fourth floor would be reduced from 45-30 this net reduction of 15 beds is being done to provide more singles for women and less students in drinker lee said spaces lost in drinker will be gained through new configurations elsewhere on the campus lee said we will still keep the same occupancy in the residence system he said four gryphons will be removed from mcclintic-marshall thus giving eight spaces in richards two double rooms will be converted to triples the additional students also will be housed on the first floor of drinker other changes in the residence system include making richards 38 currently a women's hall an integrated freshman and upperclass male hall carothers currently a coed integrated dorm will become all freshmen male criminal action possible in smags bus hijacking by ken bandler a university student reportedly com mandeered the smags bus friday night forcing the driver to change its normal route according to a campus police report the student a male junior grabbed the steering wheel and threatened the driver the report stated the university has not pressed charges against the student yet according to arthur mann associate dean of students university attorneys are checking the possibility of criminal action in local courts mann said according to the police report the bus was on its 10:30 p.m run to campus when it picked up the student and three others at the field house in saucon valley the bus had no other passengers the student told the driver he had been waiting since 9 p.m for a bus to smags and then insisted that the bus go to smags before it went to lower campus the report stated i have orders to proceed normally on a run and on schedule the driver told the student according to a statement sub mitted to the dean of students office by the driver you'll have to go to packard lab and then return the driver con tinued as the bus began to accelerate in the finn says administration lacks housing commitment by ed bogucz the administration has not made a serious commitment to solve the campus housing shortage forum viii chairman brian finn 78 charged last week he said the lack of commitment lias resulted in an apparent stalemate in university plans for a new residence facility finn also said he thought ad ministrators might be willing to com promise the construction quality of a new housing facility to achieve a short-term resolution of the residence problem i have a funny feeling that if they the administrators do something they'll do something quick and dirty and it will hurt them in the long run finn said dean of students william quay refuted finn's charges stating that financial problems have kept the administration from finishing plans for a few residence facility the administration is determined to solve the housing problem and is committed to quality construction as far as our resources permit quay said we are very much committed to adding 200 more residence spaces he added the difficulty is we don't see the dollars becoming available we're going to end up with another trembley park unless the administration makes a commitment to quality con struction finn said i do not think they have made that commitment finn voiced his criticism in an interview after the student members of the plaza review board issued a letter last wed nesday blasting the administration for its handling of plans for the proposed fourth street student apartment building in their letter to high-ranking administrators and university trustees the students also criticized administrators for their ap parent sluggishness in responding to the housing problem the university must make two com mitments the letter stated first to make available to undergraduates an additional 200 beds by the fall of 1979 and second to ensure that this housing will be of high quality to avoid the problems found in trembley park the trembley park apartments have been plagued with maintenance problems since they were completed three years ago compared to the construction of other dormitories on campus iess expensive methods were used to construct the apartment complex the university residence system will six treated for salmonella cause of illness unknown six university students have been treated for salmonella a type of food poisoning carl ruch health center director reported yesterday one student is still in st luke's hospital he continued a seventh student is reportedly under observation ruch said the illness was first detected last monday these findings have been reported to the board of health and steps are being taken to track down the source of the infection ruch said ruch said the investigation includes food histories stool cultures and cultures of suspected foods late last week ruch told the dining service to remove tuna salad chicken salad egg salad and mayonnaise from all university menus the request was based on preliminary food histories and does not mean those foods are the source he said it's too premature just a precautionary thing he said salmonella is not contagious ruch said the cases have been few isolated rather than in groups and are unlikely to con tinue for any prolonged time he said the disease is very different from the flu which spreads easily is found in groups and can stay for a week or more ruch explained the principle symptoms are nausea vomiting diarrhea crampy abdominal pain chills and fever ruch said these symptoms also may be present in flu cases but severe diarrhea should prompt students to report to the health center ruch said cedar crest college reported two cases of salmonella while muhlenberg had four and lafayette one no alternations of the schools menus were made according to medical personnel at the schools carl ruch see
