proposed plaza highrise have been given two weeks to devise a feasible plan william quay dean of students and university spokesman for the project announced tuesday while the developers work on a plan the student members of the plaza review board are preparing one of their own the students will recommend changing the shape of the building according to brian finn 78 forum viii chairman and member of the board current architectural plans call for a square student apartment building to be constructed on the site of the college theater the structure would house 200 students on five floors current estimated construction costs are approximately 1.8 million quay said the final plan and all available input will be submitted to the trustee physical plant and planning committee for evaluation the committee then will make its recom mendation to the board of trustees on whether to continue the project last wednesday the plaza review board met for the first time since dec 5 no new information was discussed quay said the meeting was closed to the press see story page 12 in another meeting monday with jerome barney executive consultant for planning the students were asked to give their final recommendations finn said we did not expect to have to come up with final recommendations at that meeting finn said after the second meeting finn said the students obtained permission from university president deming lewis to put together a program for the building from scratch student input has been based on architectural plans he said b&w photo by glickman reconsideration the city of bethlehem is willing to reconsider permitting the university to lease and renovate the birkel estates a row of 36 houses on birkel avenue above for student housing according to mayor paul marcincin previously the city had protested any plans to house students outside the university's master plan packard lab hard hit in weekend break-ins by jerry miller vandals and thieves struck several university buildings and a fraternity house over the pacing break according to police reports and a house officer a reported 15,000 worth of electronics equipment apparently was almost stolen in one of the incidents hardest hit was packard laboratory where a television camera was stolen and soda machines were vandalized according to police reports kappa alpha also was burglarized according to bob rentier 79 house treasurer a television set was taken he said a soda machine in stoughton house was vandalized and several locks were broken in wilbur drama workshop where a set of screw drivers was taken according to the reports it was a bad weekend eugene dax captain of the campus police said dax said loss figures were not available packard lab soda machines were vandalized friday according to a police report the machines near the keypunch area were reportedly badly damaged and the cash boxes taken the bethlehem police dusted the machines for fingerprints dax said an electrical engineering lab in packard was broken into sunday according to a police report a professor found the west elevator loaded with television and computer equipment an ocilliscope and a power supply the report said whoever loaded the elevator did not return but apparently did take a television camera valued at about 300 ac cording to bill baumann 78 baumann an electrical engineering student was called in to identify the equipment which came from b&w photo by bauaaann vandalized soda machines around the university were vandalized over the pacing break several break ins also occurred according to campus police city willing to consider new proposal on birkel by peg pfenninger city officials would be willing to reconsider a university plan to lease and renovate the birkel estates for student housing according to bethlehem mayor paul marcincin three years ago the city forced the university administration to abandon plans to renovate the 18 double homes which could have provided residence space for 216 students the houses are located on birkel avenue west of the university's brodhead ave parking lot and north of the delta sigma phi frater nity eric ottervik vice president for plan ning said the administration would reconsider the birkel project only if current negotiations for the proposed plaza highrise fell through the plaza project has been the only plan for new housing space the administration has considered seriously for the past 13 months the administration has predicted that at least 200 additional beds will be required by the fall of 1979 to meet the projected housing demand the plaza highrise proposed to be constructed on the site of the university-owned college theater on 4th street could provide 200 beds ac cording to current plans marcincin said he would really like to see a highrise on that decrepit lot of the college theater however he said he could be sympathetic to any alternative the university thought would most quickly rectify the housing shortage the change in attitude at city hall comes after marcincin became mayor in january the previous mayor gordon mowrer had opposed the housing of students in residential areas of the city marcincin said he is not opposed to students living within the residential sections of the city i've found lehigh students to ve very quiet and conscientious food poisoning not widespread at university by lee ann lusardi laboratory reports have confirmed three more cases of salmonella bringing the total number of university cases to nine or ten according to carl ruch health center director it is not an appreciable outbreak of the disease ruch said reports of it have been sporadic we haven't seen any new cases in two or three days he said he does not know of any university students currently hospitalized because of the disease salmonella a type of food poisoning was first detected in university students almost three weeks ago the dining service has removed mayonnaise from the menu as a precautionary measure twnety-nine cases of salmonella have been reported in auentown and bethlehem according to thomas morgan food sanitation specialist at the bi-city health bureau all but eight of those af see city page
