peter schilling larry weitzner 79 has announced his candidacy for vice chairman of forum ix weitzner is one of three forum viii members who previously expressed in terest in forum ix positions besides weitzner mike silverman 79 and leonard wenzel forum viii vice chairman and chairman of the chemical engineering department told the brown and white last month they were interested in forum officer positions two other forum members have decided to run for student representative to the university board of trustees in an interview with the brown and white three weeks ago wenzel had shown interest in running for forum chairman if i run for any office that is what i will run for he said when asked friday if he was still interested in the position of chairman he said that if nominated he would not refuse the position silverman however told the brown and white three weeks ago what i run for depends on who runs for other things as of friday he still had not decided what position he would seek he added that he will make his decision by the middle of this week in that earlier interview silverman had said that a faculty forum chairman might provide an incentive for increased faculty participation which has been declining in larry weitzner trustee payments inconsistent by christoph szechenyi lack of a policy concerning payment of trustees has resulted in inconsistent payments to board members for lecturing at the university the brown and white has learned that at least one trustee has received a 500 honorarium for speaking at the univer sity while another received no payment for providing a similar service trustee reginald jennings 70 ac cepted the 500 honorarium for speaking at last year's forum convocation the payment was made by the visiting lec turers committee vlc through the forum and was arranged by david amidon forum chairman at the time harold mohler university president of the board of trustees was not paid for speaking at the 1973 forum convocation according to the forum's office secretary neither was mohler paid for giving a public lecture on managing corporate enterprise according to benjamin litt professor of finance who was responsible for inviting mohler jennings has not been the only trustee to receive remuneration for providing ser vices such as speeches university president deming lewis said he refuse to name other trustees who have received similar payments it is unusual for a trustee to receive an honorarium for lecturing nathan harris assistant dean of students and paul franz vice president for develop ment agreed i wasn't aware of any protocol jennings said last month in an interview however speaking as an attorney he said it was probably a conflict of interest i should have recognized amidon commenting on authorizing jenning's payment said i mentioned to several administrators at the time that we were paying reggie one or two of them said it was peculiar to pay an honorarium to a trustee i got criticism but i had already made a commitment since few trustees ever lecture at the university protocol regarding such payments is unwritten there's no written or unwritten rule about paying trustees but it just doesn't happen according to elmer glick former treasurer and vice president for financial affairs i don't know of any trustee on our board who has ever received any payment for speaking here he said trustees secretary and five for concert chairman according to arcodia currently elections committee chairman heller said the positions of president vice president and concert chairman are being contested hotly he said all four candidates seeking the sac presidency have previous council experience rutgers students demand resignation of president by michele macdonald students at rutgers university in new brunswick n.j have voted convincingly for a referendum that calls for the resignation of rutgers president edward bloustein the referendum conducted thursday among rutgers college students charged bloustein with arrogance toward students his alienation of the faculty and his disregard for student needs especially in the areas of housing and busing similar expressions of dissent have occurred at many east coast universities recently some 1,843 of rutgers college's ap proximately 9,000 students voted on the referendum with 61 per cent voting no confidence according to greg sedlacek editor-in-chief of the university's student newspaper the daily targum sedlacek described the voter turnout as much more than usual one of the best ever on a college-wide issue earlier faculties of four of the 21 components of the 50,000-student university and the student governing bodies of rutgers and livingston colleges had voted no confidence in bloustein students in livingston college probably will vote on a similar referendum soon sedlacek told the brown and white the faculty votes came amidst con troversial contract negotiations sedlacek added students began to express dissent after bloustein decided not to approve a proposed 1,200 units of new housing which students had been demanding in addition to rejecting new housing bloustein and the board of governors decided to permit the enrollment at rutgers college to grow by 300 students next year according to a recent article in the new york times last fall housing for undergraduates in the four-campus new brunswick area fell 613 beds short forcing the administration to crowd three students into rooms designed for two next fall under a recent administration decision students within a 15-mile radius of the campuses will not be housed and must commute the times article said it's a tough decision i knew it would be unpopular with some students but you have to do what you think is right i made a decision that protects students 20 to 30 years from now even 10 years from now bloustein said before the referendum rutgers board of governors has overwhelmingly approved all of bloustein's decisions sedlacek
