lehigh university brown and white vol 89 - no 44 bethlehem pa friday april 14 1978 2154964331 sex discrimination case ruled in university's favor by michele macdonald u.s district court judge raymond broderick has ruled in favor of the university in the sex discrimination suit brought by former faculty member biruta cap broderick ruled monday that the university acted in good faith when it decided not to rehire cap in 1973 cap a former assistant professor of french had sought reinstatement with tenure and promotion which she was denied with back pay broderick's 20-page opinion said the decision not to grant tenure was in ac cordance with lehigh's standards for evaluating tenure including evaluations from other professors published research and service to the university cap joined the faculty in september 1969 her suit contended that she was denied tenure because some members of the university's department of modern foreign languages were prejudiced against her she also alleged that the university generally discriminates against women and that it pays them less than men in the same positions when reached wednesday cap said she would not make a comment until she spoke to her attorney gordon gelfond cap's philadelphia attorney said he was very disappointed with the decision what the judge has done is present both sides of the argument and then made his conclusion without agreeing with either side he said gelfond added that he and cap would decide whether to appeal the case by early next week if appealed the case would be heard by the u.s court of appeals for the third circuit future study the opinion doesn't discuss many of the points that were raised during the trial whether this has legal significance or not is something that needs future study gelfond said the points the opinion neglected to address included the testimony on behalf of cap made by lora liss former af firmative action officer gelfond said communication barrier hurts morale faculty say by peter schilling a communication barrier between the administration and faculty has caused the worst relationship between the two in years according to several prominent faculty members the very fact the faculty saw fit to create a faculty compensation com mittee represents the lack of awareness of faculty sensibilities and concerns on the part of the administration lawrence leder history department chairman said faculty morale is lower than i've known since i came here four hears ago michael hodges associate professor of international relations said a poisonous atmosphere exists he continued leder pointed out that there is a hostile attitude among faculty members towards the administration more so than i've seen in ten years faculty comments come in the wake of strong remarks made by forum viii chairman brian finn 78 at the forum convocation last week finn charged that the administration's insensitivity has caused low morale among staff and lawrence leder park and shop the university workmen recently decided to abandon their vehicles and do a little spring shopping in the bookstore bb.w photo by lynch no-need scholarships proposed by jim morrison a home club proposal to offer no-need wrestling scholarships currently is under consideration by the visiting committee on athletics the university presently gives financial aid only on a need basis the visiting committee on athletics is a group of alumni who oversee all athletics at the university if the committee ap proves the no-need proposal then it would go to the board of trustees for final con sideration the home club is the university z alumni club in bethlehem according to the club's president cass camarda 52 the proposal states the award would be given to a wrestler(s of outstanding ability at the university financial need will not be a requisite of the award the award may be split and given to more than one wrestler recipients will be determined by the awards and prize committee upon recom mendation of the wrestling coach and the athletic director two university administrators have expressed opposition to the no-need wrestling scholarships proposal camarda said the main objective of the no-need proposal is to provide financial help for better wrestlers so they look at the university during recruitment silverman seeks vice chairmanship in forum ix race mike silverman 79 has declared his candidacy for vice chairman of forum ix he joins larry weitzner 79 in a two-way race for the post that will be decided when the forum meets tomorrow as of yesterday the race for forum ix chairman included only leonard wenzel currently the group's vice chairman who annoucned his candidacy wednesday wenzel has been the only individual to express serious interest in the governing body's highest position he is chairman of the chemical engineering department silverman currently student life com mittee chairman said wednesday he had not ruled out running for chairman if the forum should call on me i will consider the chairman position he said weitzner who announced his candidacy earlier this week said he would prefer a faculty chairman next year weitzner said he had considered running for chairman but if there were a student chairman the forum would lose more faculty last week silverman said he thought there would be little difference between a faculty or student chairman as far as increasing faculty participation is con cerned the student forum members have been very active weitzner said he stressed the need to strengthen the faculty link faculty participation in forum affairs has been steadily declining rosenthal to head sac 1,500 students cast ballots by linda horn robert rosenthal 79 defeated gail price 79 melanie mccoy 79 and charles arcodia 79 in a very close race for student activities council sac president tuesday approximately 1,500 students voted for the 12 highly contested positions including 500 fraternity men according to chuck heller 78 sac president the other new officers are john ner sesian 80 vice-president walt kunz 80 concert chairman laura schrier 80 lecture chairman jay yanovok 81 publicity chairman janet quinn 79 treasurer and mindy unger 79 secretary the voter turnout was one of the best ever according to chip gardner 80 current sac vice president gardner ran the elections in lieu of arcodia current sac election committee chairman to avoid any charges of bias ballot shortage so many people voted gardner said that the sac ran out of ballots late in the day and had to make more after the polls closed at 9 p.m he added ballots were
