bandler and lee ann lusardi second in a series the median salary of professional ad ministrative staff members is 6,500 lower than the median faculty salary according to figures compiled by the administration the administration's comparison of staff and faculty salaries refutes rumors which have recently spread among faculty members that university administrators are being overpaid according to richard spriggs vice president for administration a review of university faculty and staff salaries also shows that nationally faculty salaries lag behind those of all nonagricultural workers during the last seven years faculty salary increases have been consistently less than increases in the consumer-price index the university currently is within the topquartile of all universities in the nation with regards to compensation for faculty members distribution of an administrative salary classification chart last december without adequate explanatory material con tributed to the rumors among faculty about apparently higher staff salaries the chart part of the university's new salary classification system for ad ministrators implemented last oct 1 was created to meet federal regulations however university president deming lewis said two weeks ago that the chart did not represent actual salary ranges for administrators at the university spriggs currently is compiling statistics and formulating charts to disprove the salary rumors this information is being shared with the recently created faculty compensation committee one of the studies spriggs conducted showed that the median salary for the university's 117 professional adminis trators—the figure for which half of the staff members received higher salaries muhammad ali to lecture at university thursday by lee ann lusardi a verbal agreement has been made for muhammad ah to speak at the university thursday rob rosenthal 79 student activities council sac lecture chair man said yesterday the lecture was arranged through patricia seidenberger 79 who is a friend of ali's business manager gene kilroy the ex-heavyweight champion of the world will speak for a fee of 2,000 rosenthal said the location and time of the speech are undetermined at this writing because of difficulties in procuring grace hall for that night he said the building previously had been reserved for a glee club prac tice director of community relations james harper explained harper explained that the glee club reserved the hall for wednesday thurs day and friday nights to prepare lighting sound and setup for its concert saturday the upcoming concert is the last before the all-male glee club combines with the women's choir rosenthal said he expects a written confirmation of the deal today if the lecture cannot be held in grace hall at night ah will speak there in the afternoon or in packer chapel in the evening depending on the ex-champion's schedule rosenthal said he got word saturday that the deal was set for thursday due to short notice of the event and the fact that the visiting lecturers committee and sac have spent most of this year's budget a small entry fee may be required ai the door he said the lecture may be limited to members of the university community if it is held in packer chapel rosenthal said packer chapel holds approximately 1.000 people as opposed to grace hall's 3,000 seats posters will be hung tomorrow night to announce the location and time of the lecture rosenthal said sideshow an enthusiastic throng greeted the performance of the royal lichtenstein quarter-ring circus thursday in front of packer chapel the performers three jesuit priests charmed the crowd with their antics equal opportunity report finalized by linda pickens a working document of recom mendations on equal-opportunity concerns at the university was finalized for pre sentation next week to university president deming lewis at thursday's meeting of the equal opportunity ad visory committee to the president the group recommended that when hired the university's equal-opportunity officer should report to the office cf the president and have an administrative assistant and a separate budget the group also recommended the for mation of a permanent equal opportunity advisory committee with liaisons from each of the university's four colleges serving on the committee the recommendation that the equal opportunity officer should ideally report to the president is not a practical possibility according to nan van gieson assistant provost she cited an administration shift last week designed to enable the president to devote additional time to increasingly important matters of long-term sig nificance according to a memo from the president's office the president is the spokesman for affirmative action at the university because policy is set by him it is desirable that the officer reports to him said leonard wenzel forum ix chairman and chairman of the chemical engineering department the group's working document of recommendations says the officer cannot and should not report ex clusively to any single vice president a permanent equal opportunity ad visory committee should be composed of four liaison persons the equal opportunity officer and representatives from the faculty staff student body and the board of trustees according to the group's working document the liaison persons would participate in and monitor searches for personnel reviews of college procedure and other equal opportunity concerns within the college the liaison persons should be b&w photo by glickman radio stations plan merger as wlvr-fm the university's two student-run radio stations wlrn(am and wlvr(fm will be merged to form one station ac cording to leslie richardson 80 wlrn program director the new station to be called wlvr fm will have an fm frequency of 91.3 and a cable frequency of 92.7 she also said the new format calls for the station to begin with top 40 commercial programming in the morning and become more progressive toward the evening the station plans to operate 18 hours a day but with university approval the hours could be extended richardson said all students planning to be disc jockeys for the new station will be required to have federal communications commission class-three licenses she added bob fisher 79 has been elected program director for the new station and elections for the remaining positions are being held this week richardson said in other news concerning the radio stations a compromise proposal has been made to the black students union bsu by wlvr concerning its programming format according to richardson if accepted by the bsu wlvr wiii have a soul show thursday from 10 p.m to 1 a.m during the last week of this semester richardson said starting next semester she continued special programming will be set up monday through thursday from about 6 p.m to 7:30 p.m which will include soul music and possibly other
