have made several high-priority recommendations to the long-range parking committee con cerning the need for more parking due to rh-11 " rosse said theserecommendations include making more efficient use of existing parking areas and paving the lot along university avenue between m&m and drinker houses across from lamberton hall rosse also suggested making more efficient use of the brodhead ave parking lot rosse said that he recommended separate areas for small cars to park and a different way of arranging the other parked cars the area along the east side of taylor stadium ryan st could be used for parking according to rosse however doing this would weaken the security of the stadium he said rosse has also proposed either a street level or a structured narking area on brodhead avenue there is feasibility for this he said but there is no funding he added that smaller parking projects could possibly be completed this year with larger projects postponed until next year he admitted that there are no plans at this moment rosse stressed the importance of using parking space to its greatest efficiency he also said there would be parking areas around rh-11 when it is completed biw photo by leidner cars line up the search for a parking space is a daily chore for drivers rapid increases in enrollment and campus construction projects have combined to produce bumper-to-bumper parking as shown here in frost off taylor gym 1,100 faculty and staff members to receive retroactive pay hike by peter menard approximately 1,100 university faculty and staff members will receive retroactive pay increases for the first six months of 1974 university president w deming lewis announced yesterday payments to faculty and staff will total just over 300,000 according to richard m spriggs vice president of ad ministration the increase in individual salaries will equal half the amount of each person's current salary increase which began july 1 it will be payed sometime on or about nov 1 according to lewis the raise could not have been made earlier because 1 we were still bound by the federal wage control guidelines 2 we were sufficiently uncertain about the financial expectations of the university and 3 we were not aware of the magnitude of the inflation that has taken place as of this time all three of these conditions have changed including lehigh finishing the 1973-74 fiscal year with a modest balance lewis said adding that because of this the university's trustees and administration thought it proper to provide an additional salary increase at this time the effect of the pay increase is to make the average raise 8.25 percent as com pared to the former 5.5 percent total compensation including non-cash benefits will be upgraded from about eight percent to 11 percent lewis pointed out that this retroactive payment is not an increase in base pay to illustrate the effect this decision will have lewis gave the following example a person who made 10,000 a year in 1973 74 and was raised to 10,550 in 74-75 will receive an additional check for 275 minus deductions the future examination of financial prospects will involve unusually in tensive efforts during the coming years according to lewis who added that the administration and trustees will do our best not to be over conservative but if we must err we will err on that side com pensating for it later lewis hopes to set up an ad hoc com pensation policy committee as he referred to it in his speech which would advise the administration and trustees before the next round of compensation increases the surprise announcement brought applause at the faculty meeting jay r aronson professor of economics voiced a typical faculty response of very nice teachers adopt 7-week limit for dropping the university faculty voted at its may meeting to reduce the period allowed for upperclassmen to drop courses from twelve to seven weeks the change was effective immediately after seven weeks a student dropping a course will receive a wf fwithdrawal failure rather than a w withdrawal even if he has a passing grade in the course at the time the change does not affect freshmen who still have 12 weeks to drop courses students withdrawing from the university will receive a grade of wf or wp withdrawal-passing after seven weeks i felt that the drop rule was being abused by a lot of students said robert mills chairman of the accounting department who proposed the change last spring mills said that some students would take an overload of courses and then drop the one in which they were doing the worst at the end of 12 weeks these students were a burden to the entire class as well as the instructor mills said adding that certainly not all students abused the system we feel that seven weeks is adequate mills said we're not really interested in carrying students beyond that time unless they're willing to make a serious effort he added see drop page 4 see relaxation page 4
