brown and white vel 99 no 5 ' fy^wmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm bethlehem pa friday september 29 1974 mann indicates possible end to frosh camp the university may not sponsor fresh man camp next fall according to arthur mann associate dean of students mann said the university must seriously con sider whether freshman camp adds something extra which the regular orientation does not or if it would be wiser to concentrate on a very good orientation program freshman camp is actually a luxury for those students who can afford the extra money he said adding that he was disturbed because there were no black students at camp this year overall my staff and myself feel that freshman camp was for the great majority a good and worthwhile ex perience he said there will always be some students who do not like the camp he said adding that he was under the general impression that the majority of the ap proximately 180 freshmen who went en joyed themselves only about 40 women attended the camp mann said one reason for the lack of women was that many who had signed up for camp backed out when they began making friends on campus and that many of them wanted to go to fraternity parties over the weekend john w.hunt business minor program studied for arts college a business minor may soon be available to students in the college of arts and science according to dean john hunt if passed people can begin working on the minor as early as the coming spring hunt said the immediate reason for instituting the minor is last semester's discontinuation of finance and accounting majors within the arts college he said he added however that the minor is valuable for other reasons it gives a graduate something to take to his employer and say look i have this academic discipline and i have this further background in business this gives him an edge hunt said the college of business and economics has been working on the minor over the summer at the request of the educational policy committee edpol of the faculty i'm delighted with the fact that the college of business and economics is working so responsively and helpfully said hunt we need help and they are giving us some hunt says minority hiring plan easy to achieve in arts college byrobfeldman ( second m a series ) i would say that the college of arts and science has more of an opportunity to hire minority group members and women simply because there are more of them " around with the proper credentials said john hunt dean of the college discussing the affirmative action program and its relation to the college of arts and science of the three colleges m the university the college of arts and science has had the most success m filling faculty positions with recruited qualified minority group members currently there are 17 women working full-time on the faculty two of whom are tenured hunt said the relative success of the college of arts & science m complying with affirmative action policy is not merely attributable to the higher number of qualified candidates from which to choose we have as a college made a deliberate effort to look at minority and women candidates . we have been aware and conscious he said however hunt said he has a rather ambivalent feeling towards the nature of the affirmative action program the whole notion of affirmative action is so embarrassing to me he explained because m the tradition i grew up m and at the places where i've taught the response is of course we should always have been doing this we shouldn't have to make an issue of it we shouldn't have to be told by the federal government to do it i feel that someone is watching us and as an american citizen i'm pleased because they're pushing us m the right direction but i'm watching myself too he added hunt said what annoys him most is the statistician mentality of the federal government m enforcing the affirmative action program they look at numbers he said i look at people because of several factors such as the university's character as a historically all-male school and its willingness to hire minority group members hunt said he does not feel threatened by a possible suspension of research funds the usual penalty applied by the government for schools failing to comply with the affirmative action standards fishkin case defendants are served with suit by peter menard the university was served yesterday with the suit against it by the father of mitch fishkin university treasurer elmer glick accepted the suit at 4:15 p.m from a federal marshall glick's office reported the university's chapter of delta phi fraternity and preston parr vice president for student affairs also received copies of the complaint filed sept 11 m philadelphia district court dean of students william quay and assistant dean of students robert reeves were at a conference and could not be contacted to see if they have received the suit according to attorney john j tinaglia who is handling the case_for the plaintiff it is a legitimate law suit he said the suit was initiated because he and the fishkins feel that there was just gross negligence on the part of the defendants he added that there was a tremendous coverup by all involved and compared it to the watergate coverup the suit has been filed m the united states district court for the eastern district of pennsylvania the parties named as defendants m the suit have 20 days to respond â– according to tinaglia the suit was brought at this time because it contains a wrongful death action which carries a one year statute of limitation the fishkins felt they were getting a tremendous run-a round during and after the investigation last year by northampton county district attorney charles spaziani said tinaglia the entire investigation was just ridiculous he added the university's insurance brokers the woodring roberts corp has been working on this case since the day it happened said john a heske president of the firm heske said his firm feels that the university has adequate coverage forum's student caucus may not be reconvened by scott penniman the forum's student caucus may be discontinued according to janet scagnelli 75 vice-chairman of forum v the caucus was originally designed as a political mechanism through which students could gain power scagnelli said but added that she would have to in vestigate the possible legal uses of the caucus before deciding to renew it the emphasis this year m forum v will be on concrete investigative work scagnelli said the meetings are not as keyed up she said in reply to critics who call the forum lethargic and inef ficient scagnelli will conduct an internal investigation of forum procedure and structure she said that the investigation will involve polls and questionnaires for forum members and ex-forum members because non-forum members are not informed on the procedural and structural aspects of the forum one issue to be investigated is the need for the faculty to vote on decisions that concern both students and faculty the recent faculty decision on plus-minus grading she said might have been discussed more properly m the forum where both students and faculty are represented scagnelli said that she would like to determine the actual need for faculty decisions if the forum were to assume that responsibility she said it would be a great increase m the forum's stature scagnelli denied an alleged slowness m the start of the forum this year a brown and white editorial sept 17 charged forum v with being lethargic m the face of such problems of tenure overcrowding and a weak affirmative action program scagnelli said that meetings began the day after classes started and called the editorial unfounded there has been no appreciable dif ference m the date of the first full forum meeting this year compared with other years with the exception of fall 72 when the forum met on sept 6 scagnelli said that meeting dealt with business of the preceding year she added see
