according to sac concert chairman mark linder 75 at this time the sac has no plans for a concert on lafayette weekend according to kinder he also said that to the best of his knowledge lafayette does not have a concert planned linder said the profit figure from the sha na na concert is a rough estimate because all the expenses are not m yet he said the sac has not yet been billed for advertising by radio stations wsan and waeb linder added that the profit is what was expected the profit will not affect future concerts linder said because a thousand dollars isn't all that much money m terms of prof last october assistant professor of fine arts leon hicks jr was informed that his contract would not be renewed after the 1973-74 academic year at the time fine arts department chairman richard redd said that hicks specialty of printmaking did not fit the intended direction of the department he said the department was planning to expand into architecture since that time the department has hired four new faculty members of the four ricardo viera another printmaking specialist has been hired and victor caliandro one-quarter time visiting instructor m the history of architecture has also been hired in october 1973 redd said hicks was unquestionably qualified for his position and that he redd was one of the people who brought prof hicks here m the first place in a recent interview redd refused to comment on the hiring of another print making specialist and the architecture expansion with a visiting instructor the other two new members of the fine arts faculty include gary burnley teaching life drawing and color design and rita strasburger art history at the time of hicks dismissal notification john w hunt dean of the college of arts and sciences described hicks as an extremely talented man saying that anyone who thought hicks capabilities were cause for dismissal was damn stupid however hunt added that he must consider the direction and ef ficient operation of the department in a recent interview hunt said his actions m such cases depend on the recommendations of the departments consideration of america's poor overriding priority rowan says by ed fiedler americans face the critical challenge of determining where society will be going m the post-watergate era said carl rowan noted commentator and jour nalist m a lecture thursday m packard lab auditorium the main emphasis m the country right now is the economy rowan said the overriding priority however must be to give the 25 million-or so poor people m this country some reason to believe they can live a life of decency he said welfare is a favorite target of politicians he said the image of the typical welfare recipient rowan com mented is a big black woman with ten illegitimate children living m the waldorf astoria the critics don't seem to care about the many people benefiting from programs like medicare and medicade he said adding they only hate the 8 million black children who are not able to support themselves how can it benefit society by keeping these kids suffering he asked the people who pay the welfare bill he said tend to look on welfare cases as leeches who can contribute nothing to society i grew up m poverty i know how drastically the cultural level and life style of a family can change rowan said rowan attributed his success to hard work but more importantly luck it's time to dispell the horatio alger myth he said put before a black audience i will always talk about preparedness and hard work rowan said but breaks luck opportunity have got to exist or those millions will never break the vicious cycle of poverty and despair he told the audience the story of how he stood on the steps of a building at his college m nashville m 1943 unable to start the next semester of classes because he lacked the 20 tuition fee a friend of his prodded him into visiting the campus greasy spoon he said as they passed a transfer point for the town bus line he glanced at the discarded transfers strewn on the ground and spotted what looked like a dollar bill he said when he picked it up he noticed that it was a 20 bill which he used to pay his tuition rowan said a series of events later made it possible for him to become one of the first 15 black officers m the navy those who have been cheated must find a way to discover that 20 without scrounging m the weeds of society he said or we face another generation of feasting on one another or we'll wind up hating one another when asked how society can provide that 2o bill he said 34.1 per cent of america's black teenagers cannot find a job it is better to have some sort of public service jobs for them m places like parks and hospitals that way instead of them lingering m the ghetto only turning to drugs and violence they have something constructive to do in that core of 34 per cent rowan said there are some youngsters with a lot of talent much of that talent goes to waste he added rowan named three friends who he said were at least as qualified as he they did not have the lucky break i did he said they joined the navy at a time when blacks were allowed only as cooks or mess attendants their lives turned out different because of a quirk of fate they had no prospect of ever going to college or to other opportunities rowan continued they never had the chance to say i was one of the first 15 black officers m the navy he said rowan said he was acutely aware that most students at the university come from an environment where they were not forced to understand poverty if someone said that a black guy got a scholarship with a lower test score than a white guy who also wanted it there would be a court suit and sympathy for that white guy and a lot of cries of reverse discrimination he said in 1968 he said the average black family lived on 61 per cent of what the average white family existed on that student involvement era is over conway says by dave klucsik the leadership and membership potential of the forum has decreased each year since the forum's founding ac cording to rich conway 74 conway was vice-chairman of forum iv in a recent interview conway evaluated the accomplishments of forum iv and discussed the major issues facing forum v he said forum v seems to have an apathy problem because students don't care he added people aren't volun teering the era of student involvement is past admitting that forum iv also had an apathy problem conway said this was a low point of forum iv i had 40 or 50 good people out of 120 that's not good at all he said a few people try to make up for most of the others he said and morale and quality of production suffer conway added that full dedication is necessary for a productive forum conway said that if this trend continues the forum is m trouble we didn't do too great m forum iv he said adding that forum v has not had a much better start despite such urgent issues as the budget tenure and residence citing past defeats of major forum proposals conway said the forum is hitting its head against a wall that shouldn't exist he said inaction on proposals stimulates further apathy resulting m an accelerating circle which does not serve the original intentions of the forum to solve the apathy problem conway said the forum must change itself if they're smart he said the forum must make a more realistic assessment of itself and realize that many forum powers exist on paper only . as an example of the forum's power on paper conway cited the recom mendations of the legal action committee lac to hire a full-time lawyer for student consultation conway said this proposal was probably the best ac complishment of forum iv however he added that the compromise resolution proposed by the administration was very disappointing i feel slighted and frustrated personally he said concerning current residence halls overcrowding conway said the over crowding was predicted by the residence hails office whose predictions have been right 80 percent of the time however a forum resolution limiting admissions was never implemented he said m such cases the administration has treated the forum wrong this attitude of power restriction has seriously damaged the position of the forum m the eyes of students and faculty he said he also criticized faculty decisions regarding plus-minus grading the seven week course drop period it looks like a pearl harbor bonzai he said adding that the issues were not discussed openly conway would not speculate on this year's forum since he is not closely associated with it but he said he it hoping poor attendance at fewer meetings is not an indication of forum progress this year see rowan page 7
