fiscally we are a very conservative opertion said richard spriggs vice president of administration when asked about the university tightening its belt lehigh has always run a very lean ship spriggs said and added that several consulting firms and management studies have confirmed the leanness of the university's operations the university's annual unrestricted income amounts to approximately 23-million plus 5.6 million in research tuition provides over 60 per cent of this total according to spriggs the ad ministrative systems office by systemitizing operations through a computer has done a lot in helping to cut costs at the university by automating a lot of the operations we've saved money on new equipment and there are actually fewer people employed in a number of departments said spriggs the systems office is one of the most im portant on campus because it has helped different organizations to decrease the costs of their operations he added an area in which the university has held the line on increases is that of university employees we're concerned that there not be a proliferation of new employees in non-faculty areas said spriggs he said that a new position justification procedure which investigates the need for new employees is now being utilized also temporary help and university students are hired to aid various departments during their peak periods rather than hire full-time em ployees spriggs said the personnel and af firmative action offices are important in centralizing university operations he said these offices are responsible for analyzing jobs and making pay ad justments for university employees also internal mobility is now encouraged within the university and a person already working on campus is given priority for better positions spriggs said it is im portant to remember that lehigh is an employer of people as well as an educational institution endowments account for almost seven per cent of the total unrestricted income stagnating and the job market becoming tighter do arts majors stand a better chance of landing a job by becoming business majors the latest statistics available from the office of the dean of students indicate that the number of students transferring from the arts college to the business college is at a 10-year high transfers from arts to engineering while not quite as numerous are also at a 10-year peak i'm not sure the job market is much better for marketing and management majors than for some arts majors ac cording to everett teal director of the placement service the arts major may be more employable in his field of choice in arts than by shifting to business he said employers requested a total of 276 in terviews with business majors last year compared to 73 for arts majors according to placement service data there is a great demand for accountants right now teal said pull all the requests out which are interested in accountants and the number of requests for interview of business majors drops considerably he said before transferring from one school to another teal said the student should investigate what's available in the job market with his or her present education i would not recommend an arts-to-business shift for job opportunities only if the student is really interested in the prospective transfer and if the transfer fits in with his objectives should a transfer of colleges be undertaken he said there are many job opportunities for arts students providing they investigate what they can do with their total education he continued in 30 years while this is a difficult year for republicans because of watergate . . . it's a little difficult to understand how watergate would hurt a senator who got on the enemies list back in 1970 when it wasn't an easy thing to do and it was a rather notorious thing to do he added i think that they're going to have a hard time pinning the watergate label on an enemy describing what happens to an enemy the state's junior senator said you're put on the other side of a barbed wire fence excluded and ex communicated he referred to the enemies list as a very sad travesty of our political system schweiker said that campaign reform was the key to fighting inflation public financing is cheap at any price and you'll close those oil loopholes in a minute he said oil company profits foreign agricultural give-aways and sugar cartels have cost the american public in excess of 6 billion according to sch weiker adding that public financing for house and senate candidates would un dercut the control of special interests in the country you'll never get rid of the appearance of impropriety or an illusion to any kind of interest until you have public financing he said schweiker pointed out that his democratic opponent peter flaherty mayor of pittsburgh would benefit from public financing yet is against it asked about flaherty's claims of campaign poverty schweiker said he's not as poor as he says this year's re-election campaign would probably cost about 700,000 tbe same as his victory in 1968 he said ac cording to schweiker in 1968 he had 2000 contributors with an average gift of 350 this time having used the direct mail approach he claims that there have been 15,000 contributors with an average gift of 45 he said his financial support this year is 700 percent broader than in 1968 to this point he boasts we have the most contributors and the lowest average gift of any senate campaign in the history of pennsylvania based on the results of three polls his campaign has taken schweiker is con fident of victory he said the polls show him leading in all sectors of the state except for the pittsburgh area where he said he has closed the gap he was trailing by from 20 to five percent schweiker said the reason for this support is that he has been a senator of independent judgement he noted that he called on nixon to resign and voted against the abm thesst the lockheed loan and the nominations of haynsworth and carswell he also voted against the vietnam war on b&w photo by jefferis everett a teal fma director announces resignation by eileen canzian c merris keen jr resigned as director of the fraternity management assn fma yesterday for what was termed reasons of health the resignation is effective immediately in a letter to university fraternities and house corporations paul leitner 76 chairman of the fma board said there should be no significant interruption of fma service to fraternities for the rest of the year leitner said keen has advised fma board member david bender a graduate student and robert reeves assistant dean of students of current and pending matters in the fma office leitner added that hazel smollinger secretary in the office is familiar with office routines and that additional temporary staff members would be secured as necessary the office of the dean of students is cooperating fully with the fma to keep the association functioning effectively in this transition period he said and added that the university has assured the board of its support in asking for the cooperation of chapters and house corporations leitner asked that they not place unnecessary burdens on the fma office but added that they should not hesitate to request needed help leitner asked fraternities not to direct inquiries to keen directly but
