lehigh university brown and white vol m — no 19 bethlehem pa friday november 8 1174 mental fatigue termed cause of keen resignation by jeff bodenstab merris keen former director of the fraternity management association fma resigned due to mental exhaustion according to the fma secretary hazel smollinger according to william quay dean of students keen's resignation was due to reasons of health we don't discuss personal matters he noted however ' the board of directors of the fma has begun the process of selecting a new director of the organization quay said he explained that it is currently setting qualifications for prospective candidates the board will then advertise the opening accept bids for the position and begin interviewing applicants the university should not have any difficulty coping with the situation in the transition period preston parr vice president and dean of student affairs said recently he noted that mrs smollinger was a capable woman and could handle fma matters with the help of others in the university until a new director is chosen recent computerization of files and the fact that the difficult part of the year has passed should also make the job a little easier he added parr said there had been talk of keen's resignation before but no formal discussion had taken place richard spriggs vice president for administration and robert evans per sonnel director both said they were unable to comment on keen's resignation because they were not familiar with the conditions surrounding the resignation guard hired by contractor to cut thefts by amy satuloff a security guard has been hired for rh 11 as a result of thefts and vandalism on the site according to an unidentified source he said the general contractor is currently paying for the guard but that students will see this expense in their tuition increases next year over 2,000 worth of property was stolen or destroyed last weekend alone he said the thefts have included kitchen cabinets vanities wood and fans he said he added that acts of vandalism have also occurred but he would not describe them specifically no comment was made regarding who is responsible for the thefts although he alluded to the possibilities of students bethlehem citizens and former con struction workers of rh-n the spokesman would not say whether more than one guard has been hired but said the guard or guards is not from the campus police force he would not say how much money is being spent for the security occupancy for rh-11 was originally scheduled for aug 24 the thefts and vandalism which occurred throughout the summer and this semester have been an additional factor in the delay of completion of the complexes heaaid arts faculty approves proposal for 37-credit minor in business by linda bondemore a business minor was passed and a motion to establish a university scholar program tabled at monday's meeting of the college of arts and science faculty course changes and the introduction of new courses were also passed the proposal for a business minor will now go before the educational policy committee em pol and will be voted on by the entire university faculty on dec 4 tlie minor would be recorded on the student's transcript and involves 37 credits 27 hours of business courses 6 hours of mathematics and economics 1 john hunt dean of the college of arts and science told the brown aad white he did not think a business minor would in crease the overcrowding problem in the college of business and economics the business minor will give students in the college of arts and science business training without transferring to the business college hunt said it ought not to affect enrollment and may slightly reduce it he added hunt said the minor would offer arts students interested in business a coherent program rather than taking scattered courses in business he stressed the benefit of having a students background in business on his permanent record as minor dean of student affairs to discuss problems in the present legal counseling and bail-bond system committee chairman gary whitehouse professor of industrial engineering described the two-hour meeting as hospitable the meeting was closed to the press committee members have noted that contrary to the administration's statements the services of the lehigh valley bail fund are not available 24 hours a day and that the service has no advisory capacity whitehouse said parr blamed the current bail-bond problems on a breakdown of com munications between the administration and the lehigh valley ball fund whitehouse said whitehouse said that the lac has suggested institution of its original plan aa a possible solution to the present problems the original lac plan called for an on-campus lawyer the present situation and both are trying to act responsibly for the community as a whole the lac has been evaluating the present system since its introduction by the administration at the sept 24 forum meeting the plan provided students with legal counseling through the northampton county bar association it also was to feave provided a 24-hour bail service made available in conjunction with the lehigh valley bail fund the bail fund would also suggest lawyers to students requiring emergency legal representation according to the ad ministration's description of the pian * area planners undecided on train service to n.y by maria zum as we have not finalized our policy to date with respect to future train service from the lehigh valley to new york city said armand greco assistant director of the joint planning commission for lehigh and northampton counties jpc an advisory government planning agency for the region thus far work on the proposal suggests that the jpc is less optimistic than the pennsylvania department of transportation penndot he said a penndot spokesman indicated that a definite possibility exists for trains to be running from the lehigh valley to new york city but said government planning people in the lehigh valley are responsible for setbacks in the proposal there are certain issues to be studied before we can make any final recom mendations greco said presently the estimated cost of extending the line from phillipsburg into the lehigh valley is being investigated he added according to greco preliminary fin dings point to a great financial burden on the public in the form of subsidies should the train run be instituted if rail service is provided greco said we may have to trade-off urban bus services for the trains a study made in phillipsburg shows that 40 per cent of the train passengers are former bus riders from this survey greco inferred there would be a decrease in the number of round trips per day for buses from the area to new york with a gain of only three round trips by train presently around 23 round trips by bus to new york are scheduled greco termed the present bus service to new york as relatively good with no extra cost to the public he added that rail service would not necessarily be faster than an express bus into new york we could not have express trains to new york because the cost would be phenomenal greco said another economic consideration in extending the phillipsburg run to this area is the upgrading of track the line in question would be that of the central railroad of new jersey
