seven unanswered second half points in route to a 57-7 rout over lafayette the contest marked the most lopsided engineer victory in the annual rivalry since 1917 when the engineers humbled the pards 78-0 engineer quarterback joe alleva was named the game's most valuable player as the senior completed 14 of 21 passes for 285 yards and three touchdowns his primary receiver bob handschue hauled in eight alleva aerials good for 161 yards and was a close runner-up in the balloting the leopards were able to stay in the game during the first half but two third quarter engineer tallies ended the suspense and turned the game into a rout the gridders were able to score on their first r>o_*ession of the second half when rod gardner dashed four yards up the middle for his second score of the af ternoon and 16th of the year the score was set up by a 52 yard pass play from quar terback joe alleva to split end bob hand schue following a play action fake into the line alleva's quick pass to tight end mike lechner added two more points and the engineer lead was increased to 28-7 the pards were unable to get a first down on either of their next two possessions and the engineers found themselves in excellent field position following one of eight lafayette punts it took the gridders only five plays to march 54 yards for their fifth touchdown with senior mike chieco who was the engineers leading rusher with 86 yards on 11 carries scoring on a one yard plunge again the score was set up by an alleva to handschue pass this time a quick out which handschue turned into a 29 yard gain when he evaded the cornerback up until this point the action had remained within the white lines but with the score 35-7 and five minutes left in the third quarter exuberant engineer fans and dejected park rooters besieged the goalpost at each end of the field and nr de short work of breaking them up into souvenirs for those lucky enough to maintain them from then on there was as much action along the sidelines as there was on the field and the easton police were called upon to break up numerous skirmishes the delay did not effect the momentum of the game as the engineers continued jack tracy lead the charge for the engineers as the defense swarmed over the hapless leopards black admission lags at lehigh by jeff bloom a brown and white survey of 12 eastern colleges and universities indicates that lehigh university has had the least suc cessful black admissions and recruitment program of the group the survey conducted by editorial page research assistant sean handerhan 76 was taken of schools considered to be of comparable size and academic reputation none of which were located in large urban centers the schools surveyed were amherst college brown university bucknell university clark university colgate university dartmouth college dickinson college franklin and marshall college gettysburg college lafayette college and williams college the present undergraduate population at lehigh is approximately 3,900 there are 64 black undergraduates on campus or 1.6 per cent of the total undergraduate population in this year's freshman class cent to brown's 11.8 per cent lafayette gettysburg colgate dart mouth williams brown and dickinson all have at least one black on their ad missions staff lehigh does not have a black on the admissions staff although nathan harris assistant dean of students does some recruiting on a part-time basis along with his duties in the dean of students office registrar sees university cum leveling off by rob feldman i feel that in general grades are higher than they should be the chances are that we are going into a leveling off period right now said registrar james wagner in reference to the recent nationwide trend towards grade in flation among institutions of higher learning wagner said that the university grade average has gone up without exception since the fall semester of 1962 when it was 2.166 last spring the university average was 2.752 62 per cent of all grades given out were either a's or b's wagner said that there is a chance of the grade average going down again next semester partially as a result of the new seven-week course drop limit the new rule which went into effect this semester see chart page 4 of 1040 there are 21 blacks or 2 per cent of the 4040 students who applied to lehigh for admission into the class of 1978 133 were black or 3.2 per cent there were 2,769 offers of admission to the class of 78 51 of which were given to blacks 1.8 per cent of the other 11 schools surveyed the percentage of black undergraduates as compared with the total undergraduate population ranged from 2.6 per cent at clark university to 11 per cent at amherst college the range of the schools with regard to the percent of black freshman to the total size of the freshman class was from 1.2 per cent at clark to 10 percent at brown university concerning the per cent of the total number of applications that came from blacks the range was from 1.8 per cent at williams college to 8.5 per cent at lafayette college the percentage of blacks offered ad mission from the total offered admission ranged from gettysburg college's 2.7 per university guidelines set on student file inspection university administrators last week issued guidelines in accordance with the federal family educational rights and privacy act of 1974 designed to give students the right to inspect challenge correct and protect their educational files according to the instructions issued to all offices and academic departments officials must make a written record whenever someone having legitimate educational interest inspects a student's files the guidelines also state that records which have been available for student inspection will remain available other records not previously available to students may now be obtained by written request by the student according to the guidelines all letters of recommendation written before nov 19 will remain confidential and not available to students according to the instructions volunteer arts advisors well received/ellis says by ed fiedler first in a series in the two years since the new advisor program started we never had anyone come in saying they wanted another ad visor according to g mark ellis assistant dean of the college of arts and sciences in fact he said well over half 275 of last year's freshmen in the arts college elected to remain with their freshman advisors who then became their non major advisors fifty-four members of the arts college faculty act as advisors on a volunteer basis ellis said each advisor is assigned eight freshmen five men and three women on a purely alphabetical basis he said that there are two exceptions to the random selection process both in volving 6-year b.a m.d programs students in the medical college of pennsylvania m.c.p program are assigned advisors from the biology department at the beginning of their fresh man year students who express interest in the program conducted in connection with the hahnemann medical center may also be assigned an advisor from biology that
