hand he said referring to franklin d roosevelt as the father figure of european and american jewry wiesel accused him of the same indifference to jewish fate as others when in 1944 a delegation went and asked mr president why not bomb the train rails leading to auschwitz roosevelt said no wiesel said one bomb could have saved 10,000 people and roosevelt said no he repeated how can you go on believing in roosevelts how can you believe in god " wiesel asked everyone affected i have seen children being thrown into the flames alive because the gas chambers and ovens were too full he said it is against the background of the holocaust that i do whatever i do wiesel added he referred to it as the greatest event in his life and the lives of his people what happened then affects our lives today — even those born much later wiesel said i believe that you are a tragic generation he said you the young people jewish or not either you know what happened or you don't and in both cases you are tragic the world has been created by us and now it is up to you to preserve it but you don't know how there are many reasons to despair in man language god the future and our selves wiesel said how does one go about not despairing he asked the survivors would have died victims of their own despair if they had known then that the world knew of their plight wiesel said if despair is at the end it is bad if it's at the beginning it can be good if despair is the answer it is bad if despair coach pugliese will call it quits by jeff bloom head basketball coach tom pugliese told his team wednesday night that he will resign at the end of the season he made the announcement in the visiting locker room at lafayette college's kirby field house following an engineer defeat at the hands of the lafayette leopards 73-60 pugliese also told a group of parents of players he recruited of his plans to quit pugliese denied making this an nouncement when questioned by members of the press following the game he said no that's not true i'll have something to say when the season is over the coach was out of town yesterday and therefore could not be reached for comment by the brown and white reliable sources have told the brown and white that pugliese told the players that he was being pressured out of the job he said that the athletic department is considering cutting off recruiting funds for next year and also is contemplating discontinuing the basketball program entirely but pugliese told the allentown morning call that he hasn't been pressured by the administration or alumni to resign william leckonby director of athletics said in a b&w interview yesterday that as far as i'm concerned pugliese hasn't quit yet he added that no decisions con cerning next year's recruitment allocation or the general future of the university's basketball program have been made after the season we'll have to evaluate the whole program he added leckonby emphatically denied putting any pressure on pugliese to quit this is the last year of pugliese's three year contract he was hired in 1972 replacing leroy heckman as head coach pugliese 36 came to lehigh from an assistant's post at seton hall university in his first year as head coach working with players recruited by heckman the team finished with a season's mark of seven wins against 15 defeats last year his team comprised mainly of freshmen finished with a record of three wins and 21 losses wednesday night's defeat to lafayette was the engineers 19th of the season they've won one game so far this year with four games remaining on the schedule recently pugliese has complained about some b&w articles he told the easton express they b&w don't know what it takes they're just kids he also told the express that he has become very bitter it's probably changed my per sonality a whole lot it's not easy to take nothing and make it something in a short period of time increasing enrollment requires additional policemen says dax by peter hauser there are some 4,000 students and in structors on campus robert reeves assistant dean of students in charge of fraternity affairs stated that the university's inhabited land has grown by geometric proportion since 1961 he said the number of buildings has doubled and the number of students has increased almost two-fold at the same time he said that if one of the men on the day shift calls in sick he is left with half a shift if time permits and someone is available dax said he must find a substitute this he said often creates a dangerous situation if the campus police encounter a series of incidents which are too great in number for them to handle dax explained they call in the bethlehem police for assistance sometimes campus policemen must choose the more pressing and serious issue and deal with it first he said dax said most people expect per fection from the campus police force adding that few realize that security is a community project and that everyone must do their part the men of his force do their very best dax said adding that no one could ask for more the criticism which campus law en forcers are subjected to merely con tom pugliese captain dax student request to start aep chapter is denied by peter menard we're going to keep badgering keep knocking on the door until we get in said leonard bielory 76 after finding out the social fraternity he and 15 other students were hoping to form was not granted university recognition the students all members of stevens house had started last november to try to gain university approval to start a chapter of alpha epsilon pi aep fraternity bielory who had been acting as president pro tern for the group was sent a letter written by william quay dean of students saying the university cannot at this juncture recognize a new social fraternity or a colony on our campus quay cited several reasons for this decision we already have 31 chapters which constitute a balanced greek population the letter said adding an additional chapter will increase com petition for pledges and could thus disturb that balance another reason contained in the letter is that the existence of a fraternity chapter within the residence halls could also create imbalance in that a divisive situation would no doubt occur it added that the social and intramural activities are built upon the existing residential living group set-up quay also cited the lack of facilities available to new fraternities as a reason for denying approval of aep see need page 4 see student page c see
