last year according to the bethlehem office of the college placement council cpc the nationally-affiliated cpc recently indicated the number of jobs offered to engineers with master's degrees has dropped 9 per cent since last march engineers with a bachelor's degree received 6 per cent fewer job offers than a year ago however the demand . for civil and chemical engineers has climbed 18 per cent and 7 per cent respectively the decrease in job offers for engineering candidates was attributed to continuing deterioration of the economic situation by jean kessler of the bethlehem cpc kessler also noted the fall season showed very aggressive recruiting of engineers by industry because many employers filled their personnel vacancies in the fall the demand has dropped for spring-graduating engineers he ex plained the cpc said however the drop in the number of engineering job offers does not indicate spring-graduating engineers will not find employment rather the choice of jobs for graduating engineers will be more restricted most companies are holding off making job offers until later in the season ac cording to everett a teal director of university placement and personnel services he said most employers especially in the engineering area want to see which way the national economy is heading before hiring more employees teal said he does not know just how many job offers seniors have received so far he noted the placement service embarks on a campaign to contact students who have not yet found a job teal explained after the students are con tacted probably in april better estimates of the job ntarkwwill be available regarding the need for engineers teal said the demand is there if business returns to normal teal said the economy hopefully will begin an farrand president of farrand marketing association farrand who has offered his services to the university as a marketing and ad vertising specialist stated that he is convinced that lehigh's proposed arena could be a big moneymaker however james harper director of community relations said the university will not seriously consider farrand's offer until the facility is built farrand said he is interested in ob taining an offer from the university to devise a planning advertising and marketing scheme that will more fully realize the potential of the arena ac cording to farrand university events will not require full-time use of the arena during this idle time the arena could be profitably utilized as a facility for con ventions trade shows concerts and sporting and cultural events he said tiie arena can be a profit-maker rather than an expensive luxury he added farrand's plan for the arena include advertising in national magazines such as fortune and sports illustrated as well as convention-oriented publications he said he also foresees the need for more hotel and motel rooms which could be facilitated by the construction of a new hotel in bethlehem the completion of interstate 78 which has been proposed to cross saucon valley could also be a boon to the arena farrand said a project and effort of this magnitude requires an experienced specialized firm farrand explained the university does not have the expertise nor the personnal to handle the matter on its own he aid bb.w photo bv litrides weathering it until the recent return of cold weather it seemed old man winter had retired for the year in fact sometimes last week it was almost shirt sleeves weather as evidenced here by finance instructor steve buell reading in front of linderman library poor lose in valley abortion procedures by beth troy two years ago the united states supreme court handed down a decision that sought to insure the right of any woman to have an abortion if she so desired only during the last 12 weeks of pregnancy did the court decide that a woman's wishes could be legally overruled in the interests of the potential life of the fetus but for many women in the lehigh valley as well as in some other parts of the country the path to a safe inexpensive abortion is far from simple the recent conviction of boston doctor kenneth edelin on a manslaughter charge in connection with a late abortion may have far-reaching effects on doctors freedom to perform second-trimester abortions although the exact con sequences of the case are difficult to assess ._•••■.; the edelin case will probably not have an immediate effect on most abortions in the lehigh valley because abortions performed at that case's stage later than 20 weeks have never been routinely available in the valley according to solveig stengle a member of pro-abortion forces the edelin case hinged on the issue of whether or not the aborted fetus could have survived if the appropriate life sustaining steps had been taken the majority of local abortions are performed during the first three months of pregnancy when there is clearly no chance for the fetus to survive outside the womb but the edelin decision has fueled the fires of anti-abortion groups the widespread publicity given to the case is having an emotional impact on many people and will ultimately have a very conservatizing effect on later abortions according to stengle this conservatizing effect could conceivably extend to that small proportion of valley abortions performed between the 16th and 20th weeks of pregnancy she said if the boston case does make second trimester abortions harder to come by in the lehigh valley the people most af fected would be the poor the very young and the emotionally unstable those who according to stengle are moat likely to seek a late abortion these people especially the very poor already suffer under the present system mary larkin of the lehigh valley abortion rights association lvara summed up their situation by saying if you don't have money you simply can't get it done here the situation of poor women seeking abortions would be helped greatly if medical assistance funds in the welfare program were made available for abor tions according to larkin she said that at present the state refuses to release these funds for use in abortions adding the women really suffer for it the welfare department of philadelphia county has been forced to release medical see telephone page 6 see abortions page « see university page 6
