', ».-.-, vol m - no 43 bethlehem pa tuesday march 18 1975 by doug henning two wrestlers crowned mike frick and mike lieberman added a new chapter to the illustrious history of lehigh wrestling saturday by coming up with lehigh's 15th and 16th national titles before 9200 screaming fans at princeton's jadwin gym frick capped one of the brightest final rounds in recent years for eastern wrestling by being named the outstanding wrestler lowa had the team title wrapped up before the finals and won their first national team championship with 102 points and two champions but the close to 5,000 lehigh fans saw the engineers walk off with the glory in the final round and finish the tourney in fifth place with 54 points a new team scoring record frick was overpowering in winning the 134 pound championship and looked especially good in the finals in whipping brian beatson of oklahoma state 10-5 beatson was the seventh seed and was helped by clarion's don rohn last year's third placewinner and second seed being knocked out early he defeated jim miller of northern lowa in the semi's to advance to the finals frick meanwhile upended topseeded mark belknap of william & mary 11-7 in the semi-finals to advance to the finals earlier he downed steve barrett of oklahoma state 8-2 in the quarters frick totally dominated beatson on his feet as he did all of his opponents the engineer junior scored the initial takedown in the first period but rode too high and was reversed late in the period frick escaped in the second period and took beatson down to lead 5-2 in the third period beatson finally got out but again frick took him down using his barrell roll that he was hitting throughout the tournament beatson got a point for locking hands and escaped to make it 7-5 frick iced it with a takedown and had over two minutes in advantage time and walked off the mat with both arms upraised a national champ while frick was a favorite to win his title lieberman certainly consider referendums by ed bogucz an amendment to forum by-laws providing referendum procedures will be considered by the forum at 4:15 today in the university center osbourne room the forum will also receive proposals concerning affirmative action student input in tenure and the forum's self evaluation in addition the administration com mittee will report on recent developments regarding the construction of the athletic and convocation center and the legal action committee on further development of the legal services program the idea for defined referendum procedures was presented to the forum steering committee last thursday by scott lochner 78 who is not a forum member according to the resolution it is the feeling of the forum's steering committee that an instrument be provided in the forum's by-laws to secure a sense of the university community's sentiment on major issues ' the resolution provides that a motion for referendum can be placed before the forum by either a petition signed by 50 members of the university community or a petition signed by 10 forum members the referendum procedure will consist of an open meeting sponsored by the ap propriate standing committee and a questionnaire circulated through the entire voting university community . a resolution outlining forum policy on affirmative action will be presented by mary flesher chairman of the af firmative action subcommittee forum support for the goals of af firmative action is pledged by the resolution in addition to support of the on-going efforts of the administration of lehigh university to develop and im plement a plan of realistic expectations for the university community and to eliminate the adverse effects of past discrimination according to the resolution one forum member will be appointed to the ad ministration's affirmative action steering committee as requested by the university administration the resolution charges forum vi to consider a workshop on the examination of values and their implications with regard to affirmative action each standing committee of forum vi is also charged to examine each issue they consider in the light of affirmative action a motion regarding student input in faculty tenure decisions will be submitted by randy schneider 75 and ira schulaman 76 of the academic en vironment committee the 10-point motion calls for standard paul franz forum group will drop motion to postpone arena by dave arnesen a forum motion calling for a delay in the construction of the athletic con vocation center acc until after a review of university financial priorities will be withdrawn by its signers the decision to withdraw the motion was reached by the forum administration committee thursday a draft made at the end of the committee meeting stated that although it still has reservations about the priorities of the first phase of the new century fund it will abide by the judgment of the development office regarding inclusion of the arena in phase one fund-raising however in the draft the committee recognized that there will be a chance for forum input in the continued planning of the arena and in the re-examination of the priorities of phase ii of the new century fund at its meeting the committee questioned paul franz vice president for development about aspects of the fund raising campaign particularly the acc the committee was especially con cerned with whether the feasibility of the acc was examined as carefully as it should have been forum vice-chairman janet scagnelli 75 said she didn't have the secure feeling that it was well studied a quality institution must have these facilities franz said he said that his feeling was that we looked at this building quite thoroughly more than any other arid decided we needed it see forum page 5
