six new men added to glee club six new men have been added to the lehigh glee club an nounced george c stone arts 43 manager a competitive point system for electing new men was released by pi delta epsilon national honor ary journalism fraternity editors-in-chief and business managers of the brown and white epitome and bachelor are auto matically elected into the society while other members are selected on the basis of points earned men who are to be considered for election must submit point lists to richard b palmer campus of to samuel j davy sigma phi be fore noon wednesday oct 7 the fraternity will meet the following night at palmer's home for elec tion and business the point list follows brown and white editorial manager 6 news manager 6 make-up editor 4 news editor 3 sports company lehigh has recently been pre sented with a gift from the alum inum company of america in the form of an exhibit in williams hall the display was obtained through the efforts of mr d b hobbs an alumnus of the univer sity now with alcoa in pittsburgh it shows the many processes which are necessary to extract the alum inum from the bauxite ore and also shown are various uses to which the metal is put mcgee played in top bands johnny mcgee an honorary chief of the onandaga indian tribe who will appear at lehigh with his orchestra for the engineers ball will offer a style of trumpet play ing uniquely his own mcgee who has developed his singing trum pet while with glenn miller and jan savitt will have lynne rich ards and alan gerard featured as vocalists when lehigh's first fall social event begins at 10 o'clock on oct 10 in grace hall mcgee who formed his orches tra over two years ago has ap peared recently at the strand thea tre in new york and the totem pole in boston mcgee coming from a musical family was taught both drums and trumpet by his father choosing the latter because it was easier to carry around than the drums he developed his tech nique with small bands while still in high school in philadelphia tickets for the ball which is in formal and open to all students are on sale at the supply bureau the arcadia office in drown hall and also by members of pi tau sigma and eta kappa nu the charge for couples is 2.20 for stags 1.50 while diesel and c.p.t students will be admitted for half price faculty lists reasons for denying student petition for no classes on saturday the committee on standing of students acting wednesday ad in terim on behalf of the faculty unanimously denied the petition of 940 students requesting that classes on saturday oct 3 be disbanded so that students might attend the lehigh-yale football game in new haven the petition was handed to dean wray h congdon late monday afternoon various fraternity houses and dormitory sections had been award change is planned cyanide junior honorary decid ed definitely to accept for mem bership six men from the class of 1944 at a dinner meeting held at the delta tau delta house wed nesday night at the meeting james a gor don director of athletics present ed a proposal for a new method of presenting athletic awards the plan is in addition to the proposed system of manager selection which was presented by mr gordon last week new uniform system the proposal includes a uniform system by which athletic awards will be earned football letters will be awarded according to the number of quarters played bas ketball will be according to the number of halves swimming track and cross country men will have to average three points in each meet to earn a letter wrestl ers will have to participate in at least six meets and win half of these matches the position of class 111 sports remains un changed no man will be able to earn more than two letters according to the proposal the first letter earn ed will be presented with a shaker sweater the second with a coat sweater if a man earns two letters in the same sport and qualifies for a third he will be awarded a blan ket with on l and his activities inscribed thereon all letters will be of the same size it is believed by the athletic staff that this new system will produce freshmen must wear shirts collars and ties cyanide junior honorary announced that freshmen may not wear their regulation ties with collarless shirts shirts with collars must be worn at all times a better and fairer distribution of athletic awards point list issued points for cyanide must be in mrs bowker's office in drown hall by noon on tuesday oct 6 the revised point list is as fol lows seven points 3.5 average for three sem esters varsity letter i 11 and 111 sports junior manager of any recognized sport head of any living group ; letter in a group 111 sport six points president of any class finan cial manager of the brown and white ; make up editor of the brown and white junior editor of the epitome five points 3.00 average for three semes ters junior manager of intramural sports ( continued on page 4 contacted late friday evening and all petitions were brought to the dispensary by monday noon more than half the student body signed the petition although it was in cir culation only a few days committee members the committee on standing of students consisted of dean cong don dean philip m palmer dean neil carothers dean a copeland callen j lynford beaver charles c bidwell gilbert e doan fred v larkin dr harvey a neville hale sutherland and registrar george b curtis the committee voted unani mously to refuse the petition for the following reasons 1 the state of war emergency in which the country now finds itself demands self-denial and the elim ination from college life of all un usual excursions and mass absen tation from the normal duties of college work secretaries stimson and knox put the case in a joint statement as follows stimson and knox statement the country can no longer afford to have young men pro ceed with their education at a moderate tempo extracurri cular activities not specifically directed towards physical or mental preparation in the war effort can no longer be encour aged in war time recreation in college life must be limited to that necessary for a healthy and well-rounded existence in other words the colleges in war time must be places of in tensive effort and accomplish ment for those colleges who are prepared to proceed with education along these lines and for those young men who are prepared to enter or re main in college with these purposes and who have qual ities of mind and character to carry them out the army and navy urge the continuance of college education the implication of the last sen tence is clearly that the army and navy believe that students un willing to sacrifice the frills of college life and make an all-out effort at securing the most and best education possible in the shortest time possible no longer have a claim on the borrowed time granted them to stay in college railroads overloaded 2 in view of the heavy week end demands on all railroad facili ties particularly in and out of new york city due to soldier furloughs and other war-time train move ments the government has spe cifically requested that all travel for pleasure be curtailed in face of this situation plus the shortage of tires and gas for motor travel in the east it would show utter non-cooperation with government and complete disregard of the na
