the books represent every type of literature especially books of current interest these include psychological effects of war on citizen and soldier by gillespie the commandos by arnold and the song of bernadette by wer fel which is a book of - the - month club selection squad drills for eli game the yale game trip petition by the time this editorial is published the petition asking that oc tober 3 classes be called off will already be in the hands of those who can make that decision therefore we can only suggest that the peti tion be given the consideration it deserves the yale game trip must have official sanction for two reasons first practicability second spirit at least 500 students will absent themselves from saturday's classes despite cut regulations work to be made up or work missed is it fair to penalize these students for their spirit their willingness to cooper ate with the football team which appears to need but one thing — spirit — to make the 1942 season one of the best the administration has given two reasons for not already tak ing action on the yale game trip it has said that transportation must be obtained before the trip can be sanctioned it has said that the students must take the initiative a new angle on objecting to the trip comes in the shape of a form letter from the government urging that students use transportation facilities as little as possible although this letter was in the hands of the administration while students were already making plans for the trip it was not released until the petition for the trip had been made this late publication does not justify the trip because the student knows as does any citizen the burdens of war-time transportation but the late issuance is certainly a left-handed and back-handed reason for not eliminating classes this new reason furthermore is inconsistent with the univer sity's original stand that the primary requirement for the trip be adequate transportation obviously lehigh university students cannot go to new haven as a body transportation difficulties prevent such a plan from mater ializing perhaps this reasoning will be applied if the university offi cials do not wish to make the trip official they might say that calling classes off would make the trip official and if the trip were official they might reason the university would have to take each and every student under its wing the first of the two reasons that the university has given therefore is based on what it believes is a need for mass transportation of stu dents because obviously they think the students cannot take care of themselves the university is obviously unwilling to allow the student body any special privileges the university is obviously oblivious to the need for a lehigh spirit the university has been obviously reticent to sanction a yale game trip although arrangements have been made for a special car for the members of the band nothing has been done to arrange a similar trip for the rest of the student body weeks ago the university knew that hundreds of lehigh students were planning to attend the game weeks ago it knew that saturday's classrooms would be emptied why was not something done in the last faculty meeting why was not the trip even mentioned the answer is the second reason given for inaction — student initiative is needed perhaps the university has placed emphasis on transportation be cause it does not want to have a reputation hurt by students on an official trip if the students are not under the care of the univer sity but the trip will be made anyway and the university will spread more good will and increase its reputation by recognizing this fact the second reason for inaction was stated by the administration continued on page 2 with less than a week remain ing before the opening game with yale coach hoban is putting the squad through its final drills sat urday a scrimmage was held with the red team defeating the white team eight is expected that the line will be composed of semmel hal shoener clarke johnson kurtz shaffer and cavanaugh and that deehan szymakowski herb shoener and arant will form the backfield saturday's practice scrimmage brought out several points the team's running attack and passing attack looked promising but the blocking and pass defense showed a need for improvement special drills in these phases with regular practice should put the team in good shape for the opener the yale squad has had no practice for the past two weeks due to ex aminations but will have all of this week to prepare and the petitions were gathered mon day noon at the dispensary dean congdon stated that the matter would be brought up wednesday afternoon before a meeting of the deans and curriculum directors since the next faculty meeting would not be until monday after noon official action will probably de pend somewhat on articles and letters which have been filed in the dean's office this information deals with government sugges tions that universities do what they can to discourage student trips and gatherings which might interfere with the war program more than half of the entire stu dent body signed the petition even though it was in circulation only sunday and yesterday the peti tion was available to town students and allentown commuters in the dispensary but very few in this group saw the paper
