should have a christmas break followed by two or three weeks of classes and then final exams the academic deans have told the forum calendar committee brian brockway dean of the college of business and economics presented suggestions on behalf of the deans at wednesday's open meeting of the calendar committee included among the deans suggestions are that the fall semester be of equal length with the spring and that 14 weeks of classes per semester is desirable the deans suggested a mid-semester break during the fall semester long enough for students to go home brockway called this a time to rest or complete work he said that it would not be a time for teachers to load on work for the students to complete at home brockway mentioned the need for review consultation and study period of three days at the end of each semester he said the deans considered the final examination period an important time of self learning during which students pull their courses together finals should not be crammed into a few days he said adding that students having exams four days in a row should be the exception this necessarily calls for school after the christmas break brockway said he added that two to three weeks of classes after the break would make the time meaningful brockway expressed concern that students not spend the break completing class work teachers would probably be instructed not to give long assignments that exceed the work for one class he explained william quay dean of students said a year starting in mid-september and en ding around memorial day would be ideal this would reduce the tempo of the fall semester which he called pretty horrible it would also give a preparation or lead time into the fall semester he added robert d stout dean of the business school said the high tempo of the first semester is not educationally sound wesley j van sciver professor of physics also agreed that the tempo was too fast in the fall semester saying that many students got behind early in the semester and never caught up he suggested lengthening the thanksgiving holiday to one week shortening the christmas break to one week and holding classes on new year's day janet scagnelli 75 forum vice chairman recalled that results of a forum poll indicated that the students who responded were overwhelmingly in favor of retaining the present semester system and holding final exams before christmas when the students gave their opinion they essentially were casting their vote she said sagnelli said students were the ones who had to live under the high tempo of the fall semester and it didn't seem to bother them as they voted to keep it david burdakin 77 suggested a four day weekend in october and another at thanksgiving most students do not mind attending classes on labor day he said forbes brown professor of mechanical engineering said he thinks the student body is not the proper body to make the decision on the calendar but said students should be consulted dean brockway provost cites problems of forum tenure motion by ken bandler university provost albert zettiemoyer said he favors student input in determining tenure of faculty but said he sees some problems with the tenure motion adopted by the forum prior to the spring recess the motion calls for the use of teacher evaluations in determining tenure of faculty on the undergraduate level we recognize teaching ability as important to the faculty member's standing regarding tenure the motion states student input regarding tenure would be obtained by using standard evaluation forms zettlemoyer said he does not like evaluation on grounds of percentage referring to section three of the motion which states the evaluation should be weighted proportionately to the teaching hours performed teaching is one of the criteria for judging promotion to tenure and it ought to be teaching regardless of how much it is he said there is a danger that the evaluations could become a popularity contest ac cording to zettlemoyer however he added that this could be avoided by properly wording the evaluations zettlemoyer pointed out that student input is used in the present system of granting tenure the business college uses a system of student reports and there are several isolated cases of formal student input in some departments he said dr albert zettlemoyer job offers down 10 pet placement office reports by jeff bodenstab graduating seniors have received 10 per cent fewer job offers this year as com pared with the same date last year ac cording to everett teal director of placement and personnel teal added however that this statistic reflected only those offers brought to the attention of the placement office and is therefore not necessarily a good indication of the acutal situation teal explained that the decrease in job offers is due to a reluctance on the part of employers to make offers until they are more certain about the economy employers are in a holding pattern he explained i expect the number of job offers to approach last year's figure he said pointing out that offers are already beginning to come in at an increasing rate i still feel confident that most engineers will have job offers before graduation said teal he said that he anticipated at least 80-85 per cent of the graduating engineers and accountants will have job offers before graduation in comparison with recent years teal stated that the total was 96 per cent last year and 83 per cent in 1971 the most recent bad year teal added that by middle to late summer very few prospective employees would still be looking for jobs these people will be benefited by a predicted upswing in the economy which should occur by august noted teal compared with the overall economic situation teal said the job outlook at lehigh is very good teal added that starting salaries will be up approximately 5-8 per cent this year teal also reported statistics showing that employers have conducted 7,768 in terviews this year to date as compared with 7,246 interviews at the same time last year the increase in number of in terviews this year is due to increased interest in our it soon became a formal goal of the president's committee chaired by trustee kirk pendleton that summer as part of the ten year plan a program of priorities for the physicial development of the university it had been known all along that the university was lacking in terms of in tramural and intercollegiate athletic facilities when compared with schools of similar stature it was just assumed that the university would have to do something to change that but until kirk pendleton introduced his committee's concept of what those facilities should be in the summer of 1971 the university's proposed 6 million athletic and convocation center to be built in saucon valley also called the acc and all university complex was nothing more than an assumption a grand athletic facility for the university was being pushed for quite some time by many with primarily athletic interests especially the ottervik says campus cops to get raise by david arnesen salaries for positions in the campus police force have been increased as part of an effort to realize long-run improvement in the efficiency of the group's services according to eric ottervik vice-president for planning the higher salaries effective april 1 1975 will be more competitive with those of the regular community police and should attract more qualified candidates ottervik said oltervik citing the increasing female enrollment on campus mentioned the possibility of eventually hiring a woman for duty with the campus police other innovations to improve the ser vices of the force however did not include hiring of additional personnel instead according to ottervik the concern now is to run the group more efficiently he referred to the organization of patrol schedules in suggesting that at night the campus police should check university buildings once thoroughly rather than make the usual three hurried visits ottervik added however that if captain eugene dax of the campus police requested additional personnel that need would probably be filled to further improve the efficiency of the force's services ottervik suggested that better training procedures be observed for new personnel specifically an orientation to the university should be followed by periodical participation in seminars by police and safety institutes ottervik said that the above innovations except for the salary hike will probably be in effect next semester he said he doesn't expect any budgeted expense to be in volved the salary hikes expense will be borne by contingency funds he added see zettlemoyer page 4 see
