trustee kirk pendleton for mally recommended the construction of an athletic and convocation complex m the summer of 1971 the acc had been nothing more than an assumption in previous studies of the university's needs for future physical development nothing along the lines of the acc was ever mentioned but the priorities planning and resources committee of the forum accepted pen dleton's recommendations m 1971 and m doing so generated a controversy there were those who thought that an all-university complex was an un necessary luxury there were also those who thought it was a vital necessity many opponents argued that if the complex became a part of the first phase of the 67 million new century fund lehigh's two-phase ten-year financial campaign the emphasis on the project would jeopardize more pressing academic concerns in addition they argued that the allocation of 7 million to 9 million m funds from the 30 million phase i would simply be too great a chunk for a project which wasn't necessary and couldn't be justified m light of the increased com petition among private colleges lehigh was pricing itself out of a market the opponents said since regular tuition increases seemed likely as a result of the unsteady economy therefore more money for endowments — new construction of academic buildings scholarships departmental chairs fellowships and distinguished professorships — was essential if lehigh was to survive and keep its academic reputation intact supporters of an all-university complex were quick to point out however that the complex would serve more than athletic needs in addition to athletic events the complex would be used by campus and community groups for convocations regional meetings involving large organizations commencement and cultural and recreational events which would serve the whole lehigh community the complex was also justified the sup porters said because it would greatly help to alleviate the shortage of recreational space for the school's intramural and intercollegiate athletic programs furthermore acc proponents argued such a complex could be expected to provide added revenue to the university outside groups would rent the facility for various events and the university would stand to recover its investment and perhaps show a profit supporters also saw the acc as a grand selling point for the university it was a matter of competition the university must compete with other schools with regard to its facilities and m this respect lehigh was clearly lacking by the fall of 1971 the acc was a major topic of discussion on campus but con sideration of the issue was not merely limited to ifc happy hours and snack bar breaks it was also being studied by the forum's planning priorities and resources committee which would soon issue a formal report to the forum so the controversy was soon to be resolved by a fair and democratic process on the floor of the forum or so they thought non-accounting business majors apply for relatively scarce jobs by lew goldstein non-accounting business majors are m a worse situation m trying to find post graduate employment than the average arts major according to j ralph lin dgren chairman of the career counseling and placement directors service affiliated with the arts college lindgren said an over supply of non accounting business majors has flooded the job market causing a greater amount of people than m the past to apply for relatively scarce jobs lindgren said many students who are considering a transfer from the arts to business college should carefully explore the situation due to the uncertainty of the current economic picture although liberal arts and non-accounting majors are having difficulties finding jobs he said the situation could turn itself around within a few years the career counseling and placement directors report has shown that within the last five years the number of liberal arts graduates seeking employment three months before graduation has jumped from 2 to 15 per cent of the 211 people of the class of 74 classified as liberal arts majors including all b.a majors 24 per cent have reported employment 49 per cent reported to graduate schools and 3 per cent joined the armed services the class of 70 showed of the 243 students classified m liberal arts 67 per cent reported employment 42 per cent reported to graduate schools and 11 per cent joined the military when asked what arts candidates can do to increase their chances of employment lindgren said each student should develop goals and explore the question of where can i apply my education m order to meet my social and economic needs ralph lindgren student activities council subject of special audlt by jeff bloom and marty baron a special audit of the student activities council accounts has been ordered by the dean of students office the audit is the result of several complaints made directly and indirectly to the dean's office about the possibility that funds from the sha na na concert on oct 18 may have been mishandled according to assistant dean of students sharon drager adviser to the sac bill conrad 76 present sac treasurer who was elected last week as president of the organization said the accounts were handled honestly and added that he is confident the audit will bear that out drager confirmed that unwritten complaints were made monday about the possible misuse of sac funds par ticularly those funds surrounding the sha na na concert m the fall " but drager said she doesn't expect the audit to find any discrepancies conrad said my books have always been open they're always down at the sac office anyone can look at them at any time conrad said the complaints were without foundation and said i am con fident about the audit i'm afraid people will tend to dwell on the negative aspects of this issue and not concentrate on what we'll try to do next year conrad said anytime anyone holds any kind of position they're easy to be suspect conrad said the brown and white has learned that one of the several complaints received by the dean's office about conrad indirectly came from his former girl friend dawn clark 77 sac concert chairman mark linder was told by her and others that they had suspicions about the way the books were handled clark has declined to sign a written statement according to drager she was also unavailable for comment acting on behalf of her and others linder formally requested of drager that a special audit be conducted two faculty members in forum chairman race by jeff bloom the race for chairman of forum vi is shaping up to be a contest between two faculty members raymond bell and lawrence leder the election for this and all other forum vi officers will take place ray bell news analysis at the first meeting of the new forum on saturday ira schulman 76 also was expected to make a run for the forum's top post but suddenly apparently decided to sit the chairman's race out and con centrate on a run for vice-chairman if elected schulman would have been the first student chairman of the forum most close observers felt that his chances were good especially if two faculty can didates split the vote of faculty forum members but some leading student members of forum v who are graduating made their opposition to schulman's chairman candidacy known schulman may be unopposed m his candidacy for vice-chairman but forum v secretary-treasurer gary lacocca 76 lawrence h leder see sac page 4 see bell page f
