squeeze by kevin flanagan y thirty-five more freshmen than ex pected enrolled in the university this fall said samuel h missimer director of admissions the situation has created a housing shortage that has seen study rooms and lounges converted into student housing missimer said his officer had set a goal of 995 students for this year's freshman class instead 1,030 men and women enrolled at lehigh this fall the surplus of freshmen was due purely to chance missimer said he added that having too many freshmen was better than having too few these extra freshmen have created a housing shortage according to mike maskaleris 75 chairman of the forum's residence subcommittee he said that study rooms and lounges were converted into housing for students the second floor study rooms in the centennials are now housing gryphons two rooms in m&m now occupied by students were formerly study rooms opening into the main lounges of the first and second floors a trunk storage room is being used as a single in taylor bucky kitto chairman of residence halls council said the university had to buy extra beds and that lounges in dravo are now being used to house freshman missimer said no change was made in the university's admissions policy he explained that different acceptance ratios are anticipated from various divisions of applicants such as sex the college to which he or she is pennsylvania commonwealth court justice roy wilkenson jr during a telephone interview saturday evening wilkenson said starting a law school at lehigh would be a great service not only to the commonwealth but also to the nation after three hours with the board of trustees committee i have the greatest confidence in lehigh's ability to do the job wilkenson said he said a major barrier to a law school is the fact that the trustees do not want to introduce an added burden to the new century campaign when asked if he was optimistic about the trustee's decision wilkenson said i'm an eternal optimist a justice in the commonwealth court in harrisburg for four years wilkenson said his qualifications on the law school subject stem from his role as chairman of the state board of law examiners and past chairmanship of the national conference of law examiners both positions involve examination of the present and future need for lawyers wilkenson said a greaknumber of talented college the usefulness of the ten-year plan financial model the status of the planned all-university complex and the standing of the language requirement in the college of arts and sciences the forum will also attempt to determine if the university's admissions policy is expanding the student population at an excessive rate plans for the next two residence halls to be constructed rh-11 and rh-12 will also be reviewed hubert fleshner forum iv chairman and university chaplain said that the academic environment committee will study the possibility of giving students some say in tenure decisions the com mittee will also investigate diversity among departmental tenure-granting procedures he pointed out that an ob jective study of the tenure issues will be more feasible this year than last when the - dismissal of andrew weintraub assistant professor of economics sparked heated controversy the forum will be operating under a new system of committees this year in stituted at the first session of forum iv last spring the reorganization provides for four standing committees — academic environment administration research and student life formerly there were five standing committees which were reorganized for greater efficiency the forum has been steadily adding to its significant accomplishments since forum i succeeded in abolishing saturday classes in 1970 last year the forum dealt with issues including the proposed law school allocation of wrestling scholar ships and integration of freshmen and upperclassmen in dorms a proposal to establish a law school at lehigh was overwhelmingly passed by the forum after extensive study indicated a law school would be financially feasible and educationally beneficial to the university this proposal is now being studied by the board of trustees another controversial issue before forum in was the question of allocating wrestling scholarships on a non-need basis the proposal attempted to attract better wrestlers to the university by of fering them more money than was in dicated by their financial need after lengthy debate it was defeated
