lehigh university brown and white vol 85 — no 4 bethlehem pa september 11 1973 866-0331 frosh enjoy poconos and new friendships by dave klucsik and ann zimmerman an emphasis on being yourself and doing what you want to do dominated the atmosphere of the second of three freshman camp sessions held sept 7-9 the serene beauty of the pocono mountains enabled the camper to feel isolated from the world and his academic pressures tensions common among freshman at the university seemed to dissolve almost at the outset in favor of a relaxed vacation atmosphere meeting people is hard under the circumstances of a school environment at school people revolve in their own worlds consisting of those friends they've met in their dorms and classes and forgetting that there is a whole school here no one wants to mix or if they do they don't know how said a female counselor who asked to remain anonymous the administration attempting to overcome this problem instituted the freshman camp program ruth hurley associate dean of student life said the object of camp was to provide the op portunity for students during the first three weeks of school to get off by them selves to meet other students in their class and to confront some of the con cerns apprehensions and expectations they have about themselves as they start a new educational experience the camp provided an opportunity to participate in new activities ranging from group encounters and rap sessions to yoga demonstrations and square dancing and no one was embarrassed ashamed or left out there were no pressures to par ticipate as might be expected rather the flexible program was carried on by the campers initiative without counselors coaxing campers quickly realized that everyone i kvitation it's not magic just a group of freshmen clowning at freshman camp in the poconos coed musicians claim it wasn't worth fight we were told we had the legal right to try out for the marching 97 if we wanted to put ourselves in that situation we decided against it because firstly there weren't enough girls interested in marching and secondly we're not looking to start arguments we're in for the music said michele westcott 77 a coed member of the grande bande two other girl-members of the band agreed with westcott they contended however that the situation is not as bad as it has been made put to be there's been a conscientious effort especially on the part of the freshmen manager to make us feel welcome although the forum passed a resolution last year stating that the band could not discriminate on the basis of sex the marching 97 remains all-male the grande bande is however coed betsy fenik 77 said traditions have to be changed slowly by allowing us to have almost all the privileges of the marching 97 they've actually taken a step towards a coed band barbara treichler 77 said i sym pathize with the band introducing girls could produce a watering down effect there's a unifying factor in the marching band being all-male the guys can do and say what they want to keep themselves psyched without worrying about em barrassing the girls i like marching but not enough to change the band the girls said they joined the band to enjoy and learn more about music and soaring food prices bleed frat budgets because of rising food prices money in the fraternities food budgets for this year will be used up before lafayette weekend according to c merris keen director of the fraternity management association fma at a treasurers meeting of the in trafraternity council ifc last thursday dean of student life william quay said that each fraternity chapter must submit a revised plan for dealing with the inflation problem to the fma by oct 15 keen explained that each chapter may choose different methods of dealing with the shortage some of the alternatives include deferring other purchases such as furniture and putting that money back into the food system and serving cheaper meals using things such as leftovers fish and meat loaf fraternities could also cut down on the number of meals served or increase the board charge to members keen said many foods are in short supply and all costs have risen sharply keen said he pointed out that eggs have doubled in price and hot dogs have gone from 49 cents a pound to one dollar a pound if menus are carefully revised and other economizing measures are taken said keen a modest increase in the house bill could eliminate the present deficit to operate with no change in the quantity or ibiw photo by kendo precision marchlng lehigh's famous marching 18 entertained the fans at hofstra with an imaginative drill faculty letter asks for vihon statement a letter to be sent to university president w deming lewis requesting a formal explanation of the circumstances surrounding the resignation of assistant professor of law charles f vihon was approved at the college of arts and sciences faculty meeting at yesterday's faculty meeting provost albert c zettlemoyer said it is lehigh's policy to keep all contractual relations private and asserted the legitimacy of the vihon arrangement other topics of discussion at the thur sday meeting were an upcoming review of the college's distribution requirements a 125,000 grant made to the university and long-range improvements to be made to the college of arts and sciences the letter asked that an explanation be given at the all-university faculty meeting on sept 10 associate professor of philosophy j ralph lindgfen introduced the letter saying that lehigh's integrity is at stake and that dr lewis should clear the air on the issue lindgren cited an editorial in the bethlehem globe-times by editor-in chief john strohmeyer which termed vihon's departufe-^ungraceful and which stated that the university showed a lack of intellectual courage in other business associate professor of english e a james announced that a review will be made of the college's distribution requirements by the newly formed curriculum committee a questionnaire will be distributed to the faculty to find out what changes in requirements if any are desired assistant professor of english edward gallagher spoke briefly about a 125,000 grant to the university by the national endowment for the humanities he asked that the faculty submit requests for pur chases of common value such as books journals tapes or films to any arts college department long-range goals to strengthen the arts college were outlined by dean of the college of arts and science john w hunt hunt characterized the college as unorganized and under-committeed stressing the need for more faculty in volvement in policy decisions and a better esprit de corps residence office shuns advice expands staff contrary to the wishes of the forum residence subcommittee four new em ployees were hired for the residence office replacing two former staff members evelyn eberman and elizabeth holtzer are attilia lanarelli ellen yamaguchi and carol frietag a new secretary karen stoll has also joined the residence staff in their state of the residence report the residence subcommittee recom mended that the staff's former size should be sufficient to handle both rh-u and rh-12 the report stated lafayette and muhlenberg have residence systems two thirds as large as lehigh's furthermore they average two full-time staff members apiece in running the systems although the subcommittee admitted that lehigh is larger than lafayette and muhlenberg lehigh's present residence staff is still too large at 10 members according to the dean of residence clarence b campbell his office has been understaffed and the two additional em ployees were necessary campbell said that frietag the new assistant to the director was brought in to handle the extra
