lihigh university brown and white vol 85 — no 5 bethlehem pa september 14 1973 k66-0331 frat prank becomes nightmare by the brown * white staff a lehigh sophomore died early thurs day morning after jumping from a moving car during what police believe was a fraternity hazing incident an autopsy yesterday revealed that mitch r fishkin 19 died of multiple head injuries including severe fractures of the skull he died in st luke's hospital at 1 : 40 a.m police believe fishkin was being taken to saucon valley by three delta phi fraternity brothers richard w groves 75 the driver of the volkswagen beetle john lattimer 75 and frank barber 74 fishkin was in the front seat the students apparently planned to leave fishkin in the valley to walk back to campus lower saucon patrolman gary hahn found fishkin lying on mountain road near the homer research center at about 12:30 a.m with two of the students and a student nurse from st luke's who had stopped to offer help traveled to scene hahn met with district attorney charles spaziani thursday afternoon and hahn and asst northampton county detective edward s fluck talked with delta phi members for almost two hours later in the afternoon before traveling with them to the site of the accident the students told hahn last night that fishkin's hands had been tied behind his back earlier in the evening his hands were not tied when hahn arrived delta phi would not discuss the incident thursday but a house spokesman gary petersen said delta phi and the district attorney's office would both be releasing statements soon probably today as police talked to the students involved a delta phi member told the brown and white we were told to tell them police everything we know another added lt wasn't hazing mitch opened the door by himself spaziani said we don't suspect any foul play and said no charges will be filed until further investigation preston parr lehigh's vice-president for student affairs released a statement which read the death of mitch fishkin is tragic for everyone — his parents friends and fraternity brothers and all of us in the lehigh community at the moment we can only express shock grief and deepest sympathy for mitch's family and all those who were close to him we are naturally concerned with knowing how this accident occurred and what its implications are for the campus a thorough examination of the facts may call for an institutional response if in dicated such a response will be made in accordance with established procedures and due process the university administration would make no further comment on the situation university regulations and the in new calendar proposed exams before christmas by jeffbodenstab a new calendar for the 1974-75 school year with a fall semester that starts after labor day and ends before christmas was proposed by the calendar committee of the forum the new calendar is now tentatively favored by the members of the committee said norman melchert associate professor of philosophy and chairman of the committee melchert did not rule out the possibility of returning to the present pre-labor day start or holding exams after christmas but described both alternatives as unlikely and not feasible the present two-day reading and study period was dropped from the proposed calendar in order to fit the fall semester between labor day and christmas a mmzmmmmmmmmmmmzmmzm mzzmzmmzzzzzzzm charles vihon provost refuses to speak on private contract terms by robert feldman in response to a letter from the faculty of the college of arts and science vice president and provost albert zettlemoyer issued a statement declining direct comment on the resignation of assistant professor of law charles vihon vihon who resigned this summer and will attend harvard law school will receive a full year's salary of 15,000 even though he will no longer be associated with the university zettlemoyer's statement said that he had been requested to comment on both the vihon situation and a recent editorial in the bethlehem globe-times which criticized the university's handling of the affair it has always been lehigh's policy not to discuss details of an individual's contractual relations in a public forum the statement said this policy therefore must apply to professor vihon later in a telephone interview zet tlemoyer told the brown and white that individual cases are never discussed publicly because of the possibility of a lawsuit he did say however that such cases are not unusual in which professors m e granted full salary even though they are not teaching we do it all the time for sicknesses and terminal illnesses zet tlemoyer said in addition zettlemoyer said that he felt the entire affair was overplayed and that it would be ridiculous to say that it set a dangerous precedent as part of his written statement zet tlemoyer said the globe-times editorial was factually inaccurate in several places the editorial said that not since prominent socialist norman thomas was discouraged from speaking here 15 years ago did lehigh desert the mission of allowing a free flow of ideas as it did in parting with vihon zettlemoyer's auditorium the actual headline read 1000 die in chilean coup allende believed dead mike halperin 74 lecture chairman of the student activities council which sponsored the esp demonstration received the prediction in a sealed en velope mailed to him a week ago this burgess most astonishing prediction was the highlight of the demonstration burgess who calls himself a psychic and a skeptic appeared before a completely filled auditorium much of the audience was skeptical until he displayed what he prefers to call his cultivated ability in the headline prediction burgess has performed demonstrations on several college campuses and has been doing systematic work for 25 years beginning his first experiments as a hypnotist to work his way through nor thwestern university the middle-aged parapsychologist formerly with the department of justice did not get into mental telepathy until the age of 32 he felt his strange occurrences were normal until he began to read books on
