lehigh university 215-866-0331 vol 85-no 10 ■bethlehem pa tuesday october 2 1973 gryphon society evaluated by frosh life group an investigation of the effectiveness of the gryphon society will be conducted by the forum's freshman life sub committee the transportation problem for fresh men was also discussed at the sub committee meeting willard jones 74 chairman of the subcommittee said the main reason for the formation of the committee was to meet the needs of freshman by seeing that they are given every opportunity to get along here at lehigh with the changing needs of the fresh men at the university it is necessary to make sure that gryphons are able to help with these new problems jones said the evaluation would be made by members of the committee meeting with members of the freshmen class on an informal basis perhaps at scheduled pub nights or group sessions to discuss their needs and to find out if the gryphons are effective in helping them with their problems after the evaluation is completed the subcommittee will pass its findings on to the forum either in the form of a resolution or in the form of a motion a transportation problem was also brought up since freshmen are not allowed to have cars on campus is there any way that better transportation can be provided in the lehigh valley said jeff bode nst rob 77 jones said that several buses traveling in and around the lehigh valley leave from fourth street in bethlehem any student who needs a ride to a location farther away should look on the rides riders bulletin board in the uc across from the post office 7 dames doff band caps to strains of south pacific by mark linder the lehigh university marching 97 broke a 67-year-old tradition with the dramatic announcement that seven coeds were admitted as members of the mar ching band the move by the band was a part of the half-time show at saturday's lehigh delaware football game at the conclusion of a medley of tunes from south pacific the seven female marchers were invited to bare their heads to reveal they were coeds this action on the part of the band was a closely guarded secret although some students had suspicions about the forth coming half-time show the football crowd at taylor stadium for the most part was caught completely off guard the acceptance of coeds to the marching 97 follows a month-long controversy soon to have been climaxed with the in vestigation into band discrimination by the human relations committee hrc band manager andrew shmerler 74 termed the marching coeds a new breed of girls and noted that they had come to every band rehearsal since the beginning of the year the girls are just as psyched as the guys shmerler said and added that they were the right people at the right time shmerler stressed that the band action was not a response to pressure from the brown and white or the hrc this com mittee according to associate dean of student life ruth hurley could recom mend to dean of student life william quay that all university funds be with drawn if it finds the band guilty of discrimination we wanted to do it said shmerler we think they're great they're gorgeous to shmerler the move represents a whole change of mind he added that it is safe to say that all his previous statements were inoperative most of the female members of the 97 refused to comment on their new status as full-time marchers one coed member said that she thought it was great but she added that the whole issue was overemphasized it's finished she said we were the only ones who were af fected the controversy over band discrimination started early this semester when as many as six coeds were told the 97 did not want to admit girls saying they were not looking to start arguments the girls made continue to march with the 97 when they play at cornell on saturday sparse concert crowd causes 1500 sac loss by george nowack although exact figures are not available the student activities council sac has estimated a loss of 1,500 from the canned heat concert said keith snyder 74 sac president exact figures are expected tuesday of a total of 1,200 tickets sold 900 were advance sales with 300 sold at the door making the gross receipt about 4,400 total expenses amounted to about 5,900 among the reasons snyder cited for the poor turnout were there was external competition from the grateful dead concert in philadelphia publicity was disjointed and posters were not made until the first week of september there was poor university community support last year in the spring semester the interfraternity council ifc and sac decided to book a concert higher in cost than any previous year snyder said this was to be held sept 21 in conjunction with the fall house party weekend snyder said the house party weekend fell through greatly cutting down anticipated ■sales . ifc promised sac that they would pay a floating figure not exceeding 800 if any debt was incurred by sac in planning future concerts snyder said sac hopes to organize its publicity better it hopes to be able to get publicity for concerts out at least a month in advance snyder said everyone is invited to attend concert committee meetings but only 12 people have shown up snyder said he will send a memo to all students with a list of 20 groups available for the lafayette weekend concert from this list students are to pick four groups sac will book the most popular group varied programs offered for freshman parents a full schedule of programs for fresh man parents weekend drew 1,900 parents to the university saturday the day started with college con vocations where dr w deming lewis offered his welcome to parents along with college representatives who gave brief explanations of courses and student life here at lehigh speaking at the convocation for the college of business and economics brian brockway dean of the college em phasized the importance of a solid arts background for business students and his disappointment in the total number of women enrolled in the business college stuart webster instructor of accounting said that the need for accountants is en dless there has recently been a 43 per cent growth in the demand for public private and non-profit accountants webster told parents that graduates in accounting will qualify for license exams all over the nation at the meeting for the college of arts and sciences g mark ellis assistant dean of the college told parents that such things as the change to coeducation typify lehigh's attitude of innovation with moderation he also spoke briefly on the new idea of graduation when students are ready instead of the current standard of four years ruth hurley associate dean of student life discussed freshmen orientation and the stress on individual attention she said the class of 77 is more involved than previous classes as evidenced by their freshman parents weekend began with convocations where the parents heard from the college deans and president w deming lewis who visited all three convocations the parents were also invited to see the football game attend a luncheon and see a funny thing happened — " see numerous page 5
