civilian defense preston parr 43 is informally lehigh is made key center for war information work keiste janulis 38 has been transferred to england where he will act as monitor of axis prop aganda broadcasting in london keiste speaks five different lan guages and is also acting as for eign correspondent for several american newspapers frey given leave to do gov't work dr austin r frey assistant professor of physics has been granted a leave of absence for one year to carry on war research work with a government group at johns hopkins university charles r larkin associate pro fessor of physics left to work with the same group earlier in the sum mer swope 41 dies in african crash a letter to the alumni office a short time ago revealed the death of lieut glenn b swope 41 who was killed aug 2 in an airplane accident in the middle african theatre after graduation in june 1941 swope entered the pittsburgh in stitute of aeronautics following this he enlisted in the aviation cadets and was inducted july 12 1941 starting his preliminary training at muskogee okla he se cured his basic training at ran dolph field texas and received his wings at brooks field on feb 20 1942 at hendricks field fla he re ceived training in the handling of the flying fortress b-17e and was later sent to barksdale la as pilot in the 44th bombardment group 66th squadron before being assigned to the foreign service one year after he enlisted into the service swope had accumulated 500 flying hours on july 12 1942 he left this coun try as co-pilot in one of the heavy bombers complete training on august 30 four of the men taking the civ ilian pilot training course have completed their air training up to this time the rest will finish their work by the end of the month the ground school instruction will also be completed this month with the final examinations being given on aug 27 these final ex aminations are prepared by the government the contingent will leave le high on august 30 some of the men will go to secondary civilian pilot training school the rest will go to the navy pre-flight training school at chapel hill north carolina after they have completed their training at the secondary and pre flight training schools all will go to corpus christi texas where they will receive their final train ing all the men in the group will eventually become naval combat pilots girls to attend i-f spanier to feature ford leary 9 groups will keep dates in chapter houses 8 ragtimers to play old-time jazz tunes four hundred dates is the latest figure on women who will invade south mountain for the interfra ternity summer ball this saturday aug 22 in grace hall from 10-2 in the evening muggsy spanier will supply the rhythm for the af fair only nine fraternities are hous ing their dates in the chapter houses and the rest will make use of hotel and boarding house facilities several of the fraternities have planned special programs to enter tain the women phi sigma kappa is having a banquet picnic on sat urday afternoon at saucon park the sigma chi dates are arriving on friday and will trot off on a hay ride at that time william fish er bus 43 will give a magic show at the sigma phi epsilon house for his brothers and their dates this will be followed by songs pi lambda phi is planning a barbecue for the women chi psi and delta upsilon are having a buffet supper before the dance at the d u house the alpha tau omega's will have a buffet after the dance at the chapter house the greatest amount of dates are climbing the hill to the beta house where 25 women will be entertained pi lambda phi and psi upsilon follow with 18 and 12 respectively many of the students are plan ning to make this a big weekend and some dates are coming up as early as thursday it is expected that by the end of the week there will be many more than the 400 women already due in bethlehem by saturday a large attendance is ex pected since the dance is open to all students by edwin leet when muggsy spanier and his band play at grace hall saturday ford leary will be the featured male vocalist and third trombon ist leary is to be remembered as the vocalist with larry clinton back in 38 and as the man who made the tune shadrach fa mous he has been featuring songs of the idaho and jingle jangle jingle type another song he will be sure to sing is his recently re corded the wreck of the old 97 better known as casey jones was the rounder's name also featured will be the band within a band the ragtimers which is composed of eight men out of the big band clarinet tenor saxaphone trombone cornet pi ano guitar bass and drums form the personnel of this group the personnel the type of songs chos en and the way the tunes are played without sheet music are all typical of the kind of music that was played down in new orleans in the old days this small group plays old time jazz tunes such as at the jazz band ball jazz me blues and other jam specials hesitating blues is a recorded sample of their work tickets are on sale at the health bureau the supply bureau and the arcadia office also from any member of the committee as there will be a limited mustard and cheese will give as their last presentation of the sum mer on wednesday aug 26 at 8:40 in broughal high school salt water a three-act play by john golden and dan jarrett golden jarrett play is last presentation m & c to give salt water senior placement cards must be filed by oct 1 all senior record cards must be filed with the placement office by oct 1 1942 an nounced £. robins morgan director of placement advanced rotc students and those entering other branches of the service as well as those who have al ready secured positions should also leave complete records at the army regulation uniforms will be re quired to salute all officers of the army navy and marine corps the uniforms which have been issued to all students taking mili tary science and tactics are to be worn only on the campus and only during drill exceptions to this rule may be made in cases where the student lives too far from the cam pus to enable him to go to his room and change before drill the military department has also announced that they have re ceived 51 additional contracts for the advanced course of these 31 are infantry contracts and 20 are ordnance contracts in addition to the 189 men who had competed the basic course those sophomores who are now competing the course wil be con sidered for these contracts men from any curricuum will be considered for the infantry contracts but men who receive ordnance contracts must be from one of the following curricula industrial engineering mechanical engineering chemical engineering arts majoring in chemistry metal lurgical engineering will be cornelia otis skinner who will appear oct 9 miss skinner one of the foremost american ac tresses appeared on the lehigh program several years ago nov 16 will see the philadelphia opera company in a performance of the opera marriage of figaro thel third artist to come before the lehigh audience will be the violinist sascha gorodnitski on dec 4 anne brown until recent ly young negro star of george gershwin's operetta porgy and bess will sing here march 12 the series will close april 2 with john brownlee baritone with the metropoloitan opera company the series inaugurated in 1937 is supported by a fee paid by the students by sales of season tick ets to faculty and to townspeople and by the sale of general admis sion and date tickets a com mittee composed in part of up perclassmen appointed by the pres ident and in part of three faculty members chosen by their col leagues selects programs and ad ministers the finances and other details of the program present committee members m thursday at the kiwanis club to discuss the topic a league of nations after the successful completion of the war richard penniman 45 and pres ton parr 43 will take the affir mative for lehigh last thursday lehigh took the negative in a debate with swarth more the topic a world feder ation to establish the principles of the atlantic chapter was dis cussed by richard penniman 45 and ira born 45 the key war information center which was suggested by the u s office of education in washington d c in january of this year was conditionally accepted for lehigh by pres c c williams in febru ary for some time it has been in the process of organization and is now nearing completion next wednesday — salt water salt water a broadway success of a few years ago will return to the lehigh campus a week from today the fresh comedy was given once before by mustard and cheese and wednesday night's performance promises to duplicate the pop ularity of the first lehigh appearance salt water is a typical summer theatre play — light comic entertaining mustard and cheese and the dramatic workshop will present their second summer production in broughal auditorium student admission is free
