lehigh university brown and white 215-8m4331 vol 85 — no 11 bethlehem pa tuesday november 6 1973 soviet dissident to speak on civil rights movement dr valery chalidze a soviet dissident who lost his soviet citizenship will lecture today at 4:15 and 8 p.m in the u.c neville lounge chalidze former head of the polymer physics group at the moscow plastics research institute founded a civil liberties organization with other physicists in the soviet union when the soviet government tried to stop the organization chalidze a self trained legal expert began to write about freedom of speech in underground publications the kgb the soviet secret police or dered him to stop his subversive activities or to tour and lecture on soviet law in the u.s in december 1970 while chalidze was on the tour with his wife his soviet passport was taken away and his citizenship was revoked for acts discrediting a soviet citizen chalidze has remained in this country and is president of the institute on socialist law new york and editor-in-chief of b&w photo bv heck quicksilver cancelled keith snyder sac president said that the quicksilver concert had to be cancelled because final negotiations could not be completed b&w coverage of sac attacked by council chief student activities council sac president keith snyder strongly criticized brown and white coverage of sac events at a sag meeting thursday night referring particularly to the recent resignation of sharon grossman 76 former residence halls representative of sac snyder reminded council members that the sac constitution states that the president is the official spokesman for the council he cautioned council members not to assume the position of speaking for the council when talking to brown and white reporters a discussion of grossman's resignation and snyders letter to the brown & white nov 2 which took place was accented by many off the record comments it was announced during the meeting that nathan harris assistant dean of student life vetoed sac's proposal for a new weekly film series of major motion pictures on campus harris said that competition with standing film series on campus would result an alternate proposal suggested a monthly film series starting in january and running until april this proposal has not yet bee'n acted on in what was termed a dangerous precedent by sac treasurer dave brackett 50 from the sac cultural ac count was given to turkish students to help pay for a celebration described as a cultural exchange mete yalcinkaya representing the turkish students said that the function was attended mostly by university students and faculty the celebration also marked the birth of the turkish republic lehigh university management assistant corps was given 250 to help pay for a directory of south side bethlehem businesses the 15,000 directories will be distributed to all lehigh faculty students employees and the surrounding citizenry total cost of the directories will be 1,000 guest speakers for next semester were discussed dick tuck political humorist geraldo rivera and bill beutel of the abc eyewitness news team were among the names suggested local elections today include three u people local elections will be held today in bethlehem with candidates running for city council school board city controller and mayor voting will take place between 7 a.m and 8 p.m for all registered bethlehem voters candidates for the mayoral contest are democrat gordon mowrer and republican charles chaffee former superintendent of bethlehem schools both men have ex pressed interest in trying to get more cooperation between the city and the university running unopposed for city controller is incumbent democrat wallace decrosta biw photo by k louse r inspired by the band a group off tile-drivers in m&m under the leadership of two mysterious figures known only as easy ed and big al have effected this permanent change in the lounge between the al and bl sections contract problems cause cancellation of concert by laurence warshaw the quicksilver concert scheduled for the friday of lafayette weekend has been canceled student activities council sac president keith snyder said that final contract negotiations could not be com pleted sac had tentatively agreed with its agent the associated booking cor poration to a contract oct 19 which it thought to be final snyder said quicksilver made changes in the contract regarding the sound system to be used they would not agree to the use of the university's sound system comparable to that of the philadelphia spectrum even though it was promised that professional factory representatives would be present at the concert snyder said they thought they had us over a barrel snyder said it was my opinion that they were very well aware of the fact that lehigh needs a big concert and as the time of the concert date gets closer they could make numerous changes which they expected we would be forced to agree with he said the group wanted a specific organ and speaker and to deal with their choice for a sound system which would have cost an extra 700 snyder said the big hang-up was the publicity clause snyder said the clause was an agreement that limited publicity for the - concert to posters on campus until a for mal agreement had been made this meant that tickets could not be sold adn that commercials on various area radio stations scheduled to begin friday nov 2 could not be aired until an agreement was reached we would have only two weeks to publicize the concert snyder said he said this would endanger the success of two candidates state positions on law and u by mark linder if there's heroin on campus i'm going to want to know about it said bethlehem democratic mayoral candidate gordon mowrer if there's heroin or acid it's going to spread throughout the community and we'll have to do something about it mowrer was commenting on bethlehem police activities on campus and specifically the recent drug raid in m-m let's not kid ourselves does any organization have the right to protect it self if a building on your campus caught fire you would expect one of our fire trucks to come and put it out you have the same responsibility to the community mowrer said in response to the campus drinking issue mowrer said the only thing that upsets me is drunken driving on campus you can't get into too much trouble but off campus is a different story what i would really like to do said mowrer is to get together with the students sit down with the forum and get a few reactions find out what my role is and what it should be i like interchange i wouldn't want to change anything you operate as a city within a city said republican charles chaffee mowrer's opponent in the upcoming bethlehem election it's up to you to control your own en vironment he said if you work those problems out i'd keep my hands off concerning drinking chaffee said see candidates page s see sac cancels page 4 see u people
