which should be known with research material collect ed from 42 countries his library covering magic as an entertain ment and a means of preying on human cruelty has appeared on exhibition in the new york pub lic library the chicago public li brary and the grolier club the museum of the city of new york considered his collection of such interest that a special section was set apart for a part of his vast exhibition the king of all prestidigitators and the outstanding exponent of necromancy in this country all of which shows that he is capable of presenting in an easy and com paniable manner a show with a superlative degree of entertain ment value mr mulholland has made a lifetime study of the his tory lore and psychology of magic spent lifetime at magic now that newspapers magazines and motion pictures are alive with a deluge of propaganda it is the duty of every thinking american to realize the facts behind the pro paganda and few men are better qualified than mr mulholland to debunk the psychology of the pro paganda of the dictators he has during recent years devoted his entire attention to this field and has concrete examples of a fas cinating variety to prove his state ments about german japanese and italian publications believing that man provides the greatest study of mankind mr mulholland's studies have been re sponsible for his living and talking with coolies kings dictators and paupers in almost every country of the world students will be admitted upon presentation of their summer ses sion bursar's receipts general ad mission price will be fifty five series j mulholland to give performance tomorrow e e ch e education professors appointed three new members have been appointed to the faculty dr charles e stoops jr as assistant professor of chemical engineering mr frederick p fischer as assis tant professor of electrical engi neering mr l tennent lee as as sistant professor of education dt stoops a graduate of ohio state and purdue universities comes here from the oldsbury electro-chemical company nia gara falls where he is plant and development chemist he is a member of the american chem ical society american institute of chemical engineers american as sociation for advancement of sci ence sigma xi and tau beta pi he will succeed dr darrel e mack who has left to take a post at the university of virginia fischer to replace hibshman mr fischer is at present an in structor in war training at ohio state university he received his bachelor's degree at rutgers and a master's degree in electrical en gineering at lehigh he completed his graduate work at m i t after which he taught at rutgers and m i t he is a member of the american institute of electrical engineers society for the promotion of en gineering education phi beta kappa tau beta pi and sigma xi he will take over the duties of prof nelson s hibshman who has accepted the post of head of the department of electrical en gineering at new york university lee to succeed white mr lee will come to the uni versity's department of education from teacher's college columbia university where he has been an assistant in administration and re search assistant he received his bachelor's degree at alabama polytechnic institute in 1928 and his master's degree at the univer sity of alabama in 1938 he has recently completed his work for the degree of doctor of education at columbia he has been a principal in ele mentary and secondary schools in alabama following his graduation from alabama polytechnic insti tute and university of alamaba the book to be issued to stu dents within the near future is in effect a codification of the nu merous pieces of student-affecting university legislation which have lain scattered through the larger charter and regulations in many cases language has been simplified the back cover of the book is an index ignorance of the law is no ex cuse university has codified student regulations a booklet containing all those university rules and regulations which affect undergraduates has just been published by the uni versity 250 men attend cyanide pep rally to meet coach hoban and his staff members approximately 250 students attended the cyanide rally held in honor of the fresh men last wednesday evening in packard auditorium the rally got underway with a few numbers played by the uni versity band q john schwarz summer president of cyanide jun ior activities society opened the rally with an address welcoming the freshmen to the university he introduced dr claude beardslee head of the department of moral and religious philosophy who re assured the members of the class of 46 of their welcome and stress ed the importance of congenial re lationships with their fellow stu dents lehigh's new football coach george hoban 15 introduced the members of his staff to the stu dents george ekaites first to be presented will coach the backfield in the coming season leo pren dergast line coach was followed by eb caraway varsity end coach and j v coach lou young jr recently appointed assistant line coach and assistant j v coach was announced by hoban but was unable to attend following the speech by hoban in which he outlined the prospects of the coming season songs and cheers were led by the cheerlead ers after the singing of the alma mater the rally disbanded at 8:15 lehigh university brown and white bethlehem pa wednesday august 12 1942 vol xlix-a — no 11 scl magician . . . price — 5 cents ed leet discovers thief in chi phi house sunday sunday morning about 3:30 a m a thief was discovered in the chi phi fraternity house he was discovered by edwin l leet m e 44 and ran away before a description could be obtained leet called the city police and they searched the house however nothing was missing it was suspected that the arsonist who had tried to burn the house down in april has re turned to finish the job an editorial the triple play at the june 5 meeting of the alumni association board of direc tors mr c l t edwards eleven proposals for making better alumni of our students were recommended for serious consideration mr edwards eleven proposals however are more than a step in the creation of a stronger alumni body they are the first link of a bond between students and alumni — a bond which has been for many years non-existent the practicability of the edwards proposals cannot be proved until they are put into operation but the principle on which they are based is more than worthy of serious consideration the proposals repre sent an attempt on the part of sympathetic alumni to improve the university through cooperation of at least two of the three funda menal bodies of any private university — students alumni and ad ministration it is obvious to the students at least that necessary cooperation does not now exist between students and administration nor between students and alumni the latter cooperation can be achieved to a large degree by the adoption and follow-through of mr edwards proposals which call for the return of the college meeting a*hd ex change of student and alumni thought by speeches and publications it is obvious also that many alumni do not understand student opinion because of lack of intimate contact with the student body many alumni do understand student problems witness the under standing of the letter on page 2 but not the extent to which these problems are carried a bond between alumni and students may well be the catalyst which will eventually clear up the present distant relations between the faculty and administration and the students 3 new men on faculty leaves to nyu . . . spanier to play for if dance e e prof gets post at nyu will replace rogers features slow ballads muggsy spanier instead of dick rogers will play at interfraternity summer ball on saturday evening aug 22 from 10-2 at grace hall announced edward j cavanaugh m e 43 chairman of the com mittee dance will be informal during the seven years he play ed with the ted lewis band he toured europe and attracted much attention the prince of wales now the duke of windsor called him the king of the plunger mute after leaving ted lewis he play ed the chicago rhythm kings the bucktown five and the old dor sey brothers band ben pollack then succeeded in getting him to join his band which later became the present bob crosby crew in 1939 he formed his own small band the ragtimers and was fea tured in the panther room of chi cago's hotel sherman for six months the records this unit made were acclaimed by the rec ord critics as jazz classics however muggsy decided that the small jazz unit would not sell and started organizing a big band that could play smooth danceable music as well as good swing the new band opened at the arcadia ballrom in new york in the four months spent at the ballroom he smashed all existing attendance records at present the band is playing one-nighters and theatres last week he played the steel pier in atlantic city muggsy plays trumpet and cor net and is known as one of the top men in the country on both instru ments he plays the trumpet on the many slow popular songs that the band plays his work on this horn is best compared with that of charlie spivak the clear tone and the little or no resort to the upper register are character istics of both men on the show numbers spanier usually changes to cornet some times using the plunger mute which is closely associated with him the horn is always played in the middle register never resort ing to high note screeching or over-blowing of the type played by harry james and the other killer-diller bands the muggsy spanier band is regarded by many critics as the coming name band of the country tickets may be purchased at the arcadia office the health bureau and the supply bureau they can also be obtained from members of the committee edward cavan augh m e 43 chandler mckaig ch e 43 william walker ch e 43 richard palmer arts 43 charles norlin met e 43 danal epstein bus 44 and g whitney snyder arts 44 nelson s hibshman associate professor of electrical engineering has accepted the position of head of the department of paper on synchronous mechanical rectifier which he wrote with s s seyfert and d c bromberger was published in september 1936 first sergeant william h ellers 40 of bergenfield n j has been commissioned at aberdeen prov ing ground md as a second lieu tent at the officer candidate school before he was selected for officer training he served as top sergeant of the ordnance de tachment there saturday evening in drown hall three plays by student playwrights were given their premiere by the dramatic workshop and mustard and cheese the three plays a bench in the park by edwin klein fifty bucks by joe kem ber and a family of fashion by hibbard gumpert were notab ly successful as entertainment much of the credit for that suc cess must be given their director mr james t nardin graduate as sistant in
