lehigh university brown and white vol 85 — no 35 bethlehem pa friday february 22 1974 mt-t331 s*y.<ap?<*ssft committee formed to investigate confidentiality of forum affairs by peter menard editor's note the promotion of eric ottervik to vice-president for planning has been unanimously approved by the seven man executive committee of the board of trustees w deming lewis university president is expected to formally make the announcement next week a four-man committee consisting of the forum representatives to the board of trustees has been set up with the feeling that the forum should at least check or investigate its own confidentiality ac cording to the chairman of the committee frank t colon associate professor of government this self-evaluation is a result of the brown and white's recent publication of a special forum committee report on vice provost eric otter vik's nomination for the new post of vice president for planning the report which was against ottervik's promotion was intended to remain con fidential colon's committee has contacted jeff bloom 76 the author of the b&w article bloom senior news editor said that colon treated me very honestly and fairly regarding inquiries about the article bloom said that the forum is infringing upon the right of freedom of the press he said the forum is trying to come up with some sort of scapegoat for its in competence and he compared this committee to the white house plumbers unit rich conway 74 vice-chairman of the forum disagreed with bloom's analogy what the plumbers did was illegal and what the forum committee is doing is completely legal he said adding there are a number of people who might take the opposite stand and say the person who originally obtained the document is the plumber bloom said he called wesley r smith professor of physics and chairman of the committee that submitted the report prior to publication of the article smith was given the opportunity to respond or comment in the paper after he was con vinced that bloom possessed copies of the document bloom said he told me that i had stolen the letter smith has since refused mowrer includes u role in renewal of south side by george now ack i envision that area as being an area where there would be some stores i see a bank building a men's store a small restaurant and perhaps a bookstore i would like to see some type of cooperative effort with lehigh university said bethlehem mayor gordon mowrer in reference to the south side 76 redevelopment plan the area concerned borders morton street to the south and goes down almost to third street near the railroad tracks part of the area borders university property one of the areas that can be tapped which has not been tapped is the lehigh university population students and professors mowrer said the redevr'gpment committee has not pinpointed a pecific number of shops to be built in this area said mowrer adding that this is just one phase of many things to be done on the south side mowrer said he hopes that the university will rent some of this space and use it for offices funding for this program would come from the city state and the federal government concerning the current gas crisis mowrer said that he would like to see more car pooling for everyone lehigh students included he pointed out that if people would get together on their vacations it would greatly help the current situation i do see the odd-even system as something that is going to help he said he noted that bethlehem was the first city in the state to go into that system adding it will be working pretty darn well much earlier and much faster than in other communities we will have had a chance to ask questions about it and find out the specific details and to get the knowledge necessary to run the system efficiently when other cities will just be starting this system bethlehem had very serious problems on the seventh and eighth but since then they have decreased mowrer said with a gordon mowrer new distribution system approved by arts faculty by jeffrey bodenstab the faculty of the college of arts and sciences has adopted a distribution requirement plan for bachelor of arts majors that does not contain a foreign language or mathematics requirement an amendment to add a foreign language requirement is still under consideration however according to the requirements that now stand freshman candidates for the bachelor of arts degree are required to take two courses each from the humanities social sciences and natural sciences in addition to two semesters of freshman english in succeeding years a student would be required to elect 20 hours of courses in disciplines outside his own opening the meeting with a quote from kurt vennegut's cat's cradle john hunt dean of the college of arts and sciences warned the faculty not to throw away the work that had been done hunt then outlined the advantages of the proposal he pointed ■out that the distribution requirements achieved the goal of ensuring intellectual breadth while taking advantage of the college's new advising system which tailors the needs of the student to the system moreover he noted the system is simple and easily implemented discussion of the proposal centered around two amendments proposed by paul myers associate professor of geology according to robert barnes associate professor of philosophy the first amend ment called for a change in the system which would allow students to fulfill their 20-hour requirement with elementary-type courses he explained that the system discouraged intellectual breadth and excluded students from areas that are of interest to them ralph lindgren professor of student found dead on friday in apartment richard c kline 75 was found dead friday feb 15 in his apartment at 316 west packer ave memorial services will be held at 12:15 p.m on monday feb 25 in the packer memorial church the death was ruled accidental on saturday by northampton county coroner joseph reichel reichel said death resulted from asphyxiation by strangulation kline a former member of the forum was enrolled in the college of business and economics he was a member of cyanide a freshman counseling program and was photo editor of the epitome last year he was the son of the late richard and jeanne dolhonde kline of rochester new york surviving is a brother geoffrey of rochester another student living in the rooming house discovered kline's body kline had last been seen wednesday morning folk urges restructuring of u grading procedure by lauren eisenberg a restructuring of lehigh's present grading system to add plus and minus signs was proposed by robert folk professor of physics at a faculty meeting monday feb 11 faculty members voted to accept course changes for next year as printed in the b&w and adopted revisions to certain sections of procedures rules and regulations on faculty appointments tenure and retirement folk urged the faculty to get the issue of plus and minus grading out of the educational policy committee and into faculty hands for discussion and voting he called the ed pol committee hostile to the idea of a revised grading system and suggested that the group revive the tabled issue as soon as possible when j d ryan professor of geology chaired ed pol he proposed the following grades to be assigned to students a,a 8+,8,8 c+,c,c d+.d.d and f ryan advised by james wagner registrar suggested in his oct 31 proposal that quality points should range from a 12 point a to a 2 point d and a 0 for failure these points when weighted according to the number of credit hours per course would determine the students overall average ryan said he supports the proposal because of what he termed the injustice in giving the same grade to a student with 89 percent as to one with an 80 per cent average the former student just misses an a by one point where the latter just makes the borderline for his b it isn't fair richard
