brown and white vol 85 — no 41 friday march 29 1974 866-0331 flaherty and denenberg to debate issues at u a candidate's night featuring two pennsylvania democratic senatorial hopefuls will be presented by the university's chapter of the college young democrats at 7:90 p.m april 16 gov milton j shapp will be on campus april 17 the young democrats also passed a resolution calling for the impeachment of president nixon at their meeting wed nesday the candidates n ght will be open to the public free of charge peter flaherty mayor of pittsburgh and herbert denenberg pennsylvania insurance commissioner will be present to discuss campaign issues both men are running for the democratic candidacy for united states senate the democratic candidate will oppose the incumbent republican richard schweiker on april 17 from 2 p.m to 4:30 p.m the organization will sponsor a luncheon with shapp a speech and question-and-answer period will follow all students are invited to attend the fee for the luncheon is 3.00 the group unanimously approved a resolution to call for the house of representatives to impeach president nixon the resolution said that the events surrounding the presidential election campaign of 1972 have brought doubt on the honesty of the men in the executive branch of our federal government and have cast aspersions on the integrity of national institutions the resolution concluded as in dividuals interested in seeing the facts resolved and justice served we call for a complete and public hearing of the president's involvement in this sordid affair if found guilty according to the articles of impeachment the president should be removed from office as prescribed by the u.s constitution herbert denenberg peter flaherty forum passes development plan recommits recruitment proposal by peter menarb two major resolutions came to the floor of the forum tuesday night one dealing with minority recruitment and the other with the forum's role in major develop ment programs rich conway's proposal for increased recruitment in the admissions office particular f minorities was recom mitted for possible rewording and must be brought back to the forum by the december meeting the major objections concerned the wording of the resolution and the complexity of the issues conway stated several times during the discussion that the wording was in tentionally loose and that much time had been spent on it robert barnes associate professor of philosophy called for separation of the issues of minority recruitment and recruitment in general cliff lavine 75 submitted a friendly amendment which in effect erased from the resolution all reference to minorities this amendment was rejected albert zettlemoyer vice-president and provost said that everyone must keep in mind that minorities need a free ride and you have to recruit the money as well as the person nathan w harris assistant dean of student life is the official presently responsible for the recruitment of blacks and spanish-speaking students he pointed out some problems encountered in this area saying that out of approximately 30,000 alumni only 25 are black and alumni assistance in the recruitment of blacks is therefore not feasible the bill was recommitted after ap proximately 45 minutes of discussion the second major resolution dealt with forum involvement in major development projects the resolution formalized and clarified the role the forum is to play in projects such as new buildings modification of old buildings and new academic programs it was passed with two friendly amendments a resolution which dealt with forum involvement in administrative changes at the rank equivalent to academic dean or above was not voted upon because university president w deming lewis wanted to examine the resolution and also energy crisis may influence new calendar if we knew what the weather was going to be like in the winter and summer we could make some definite proposals but we can only guess at the weather and the supply of energy said robert gallagher chairman of the calendar committee and associate dean of engineering on tuesday gallagher said that the committee is considering a recommendation which would lengthen christmas vacation by two weeks to conserve fuel but there are many factors to be considered there are many cultural and athletic events scheduled for that time and attendance would suffer he said also die summer vacation would be pushed back to june thus hurting job hunting students gallagher said that the president's office and the forum are also studying possible changes one of which would end all vacations on tuesdays instead of mon days because of gasless sundays the committee is also considering renovating the power plant in order to produce heat more efficiently gallagher added we are studying all the ramifications of air-conditioned buildings on campus two proposals that the committee rejected were starting the fall semester earlier and combining all spring vacations into 1 two-week long vacation he said u will hire officer to recruit minorities byjofineman on april 1 the university will begin searching for a full-time affirmative ac tion officer said thomas verbonitz director of administrative services under the direction of the president's office this officer will be responsible for designing implementing monitoring coordinating and updating the univer sity's affirmative action program an affirmative action plan is basically a plan to promote the hiring and utilization of females and minorities said ver bonitz in past years the university has had fragmented attempts to install an affirmative action program he said work has been done in the area of non faculty personnel by the personnel office and the office of the provost has taken care of faculty personnel verbonitz said an affirmative action officer will function as a liaison between administration and all academic and staff departments of the university in equal employment matters he said in the area of non-faculty personnel the affirmative action committee has developed job descriptions for secretarial and clerical staffs which promote equal saw photo toy conner y jean shepherd 59 run for 50 undergraduate forum seats only nine undergraduate candidates for forum v will not be elected this year there are 50 seats open for undergraduate students in forum v and only 59 students filed petitions by the wednesday deadline originally petitions were due on monday but the low number of petitions led to an extension of the deadline for the 15 open seats in the at-large category 17 students will be on the ballot for the 13 arts college seats there are 14 candidates the eight business college seats will be competed for by 12 candidates and 16 nominees will compete for 14 engineering seats if it is true that students no longer give a damn the end of the forum or a major crowd hears shepherd tell of his school days byrobfeldman jean shepherd new york radio per sonality author actor editor comedian and commentator on the american scene spoke for over two hours wednesday night to a standing-room only crowd in packard laboratory auditorium the audience composed of a disproportionate amount of those over thirty filled every available seat and aisle as they listened to shepherd's com mentary on what can loosely be described as the state of american education as he remembered it shepherd began by recalling his days as an engineering student at indiana university and by telling his impressions of the lehigh valley you can tell an engineer by listening for the slap of his decilog slide rule and then took the audience with him through a history of his own school days at the warren g harding grammar school where the extent of his education was his learning that bolivia exports tin shepherd also talked about the painful memories of his school days as a persecuted member of the alphabetical
