bethlehem pa wednesday july 8 1942 price — 5 cents vol xlix-a — no 7 a bundle of 1941 german periodicals was received by the library monday morning the first such shipment since 1940 according to head li brarian howard s leach some of the periodicals were represented by only one issue he said and some by three or four the package was sent to lehigh by way of switzerland through the efforts of the am erican library association it is hoped that such periodicals will continue to be received long-lost periodicals arrive from germany no charge for dance e r c gives student chance for commission dean explains reserve corps war service opportunities a statement by dean wray h cong don describing the army's and navy's new enlisted reserve corps plan for college students is being sent to every freshman sophomore and junior the paper describes the quotas qualifications respon sibilities and privileges of the corps the examination required and the commission eventually granted and the procedures for entrance into the e r c purpose of the plan according to dean congdon's statement is to provide ... a constant pool of material for potential officers and for capable college students opportunities to qualify for com missions after completing as much of their college training as pos sible physically qualified students who enlist in the corps and pass a validating examination at the end of the sophomore year will be able to continue in college until graduation and thus qualify for a commission student corps mem bers failing the validating exam may be called into active service at the end of the second year there will be no charge for the dance sponsored by the town and dormitory councils on july 18 the dance is to be given in grace hall and music will be provided by harry romig and his orches tra from 9 p m until 1 a m all students are invited to the affair provided they are in good standing in their living groups the main purpose of having an open affair is to encourage all le high men to attend a dance and not have to worry about the ex pense the dance comes at a time when most students will really be looking for some diversion since the first semester will have just ended the committee composed of members of the town and dormi tory councils has invited all fra ternity men to attend professor kogetliantz will teach mathematics prof evand kogetliantz who was offered a position in the math ematics department more than a year and a half ago finally arrived in bethlehem a few days ago a teacher of mathematics at the university of paris and the uni versity of moscow professor ko getliantz made the hazardous jour ney from europe in 45 days garand supply sufficient to teach mechanism it will now be possible for stu dents to practice with the garand rifle the rifle now being used by the american forces in actual com bat to date the rifles had been used chiefly for demonstration pur poses the military department however has announced that be cause of the arrival of an addi tional consignment it is now pre pared to instruct the students in the functioning field stripping and operation of the garand rifle russell van kirk eberman 65 a janitor in richards house was found dead at 10:20 a m last thursday by robert e pollock bus 43 his body was discovered in the washroom of section i apparently having died of a heart condition russ had only been in the university's employ ment since june 29 but he had already become well liked by the students in richards house before coming to lehigh mr eberman was employed in the bethlehem office of the call chronicle as a carrier manager a newspaperman for years he had served 31 years with the bethle hem globe-times staff and had become well-known for his penn sylvania german writings a member of one of the pioneer moravian families of bethlehem he sang for many years with the choir of the central moravian church he also was one of the original members of the bach choir dormitory janitor dies suddenly dr amos b ettinger profes sor of history acted as referee at the symposium presiding at the discussion was william g wolfsten bus 43 president wolfsten announced that the first meeting of the sec ond period of the summer semes ter will be held wednesday eve ning july 22 when a professor from the chemistry department will speak on science and the war a map providing for the com plete dissolution of germany as a nation and redistribution of states in europe was advocated by the representative from perm state the league of nations must be provided with the power to hold its members in continuous sessions in order that it might be ready to deal with every crisis stress was laid upon the fac tor that the axis nations will need a better educational system schwab reminded the club mem bers that the children of the axis countries particularly those in germany have been brought up to die for their country thus courses in self government and in ternational understanding must be instituted two representatives from perm state college and two from le high presented the problem of post war reconstruction in the sympo sium arnold o putnam i e 43 and leonard c schwab i e 44 spoke on the opposing factors for cooperation and direct interven tion cooperation rather than forced control for the treatment of the axis nations was concluded at a symposium discussion on the at titude of the allied nations to be taken in dealing with the axis given before the members of the international relations club last wednesday evening at drown hall discuss axis before i r c since brown and white writers have to study for ex aminations as well as every one else there will be no b and w issued next wednes day july 15 publication will be resumed on wednesday july 22 no b & w next week the more scientific part of the course will be open to high school teachers and each will receive 72 hours of instruction free of charge both dunigan and elmes have requested permission to live at their fraternity house while they are here dunigan plans to return to lehigh after the war is over they have been sent from phil adelphia by the naval aviation cadet selection board where all have passed their mental and phy sical examinations the men will also receive from 40 to 45 hours of flight training while they are here this part of the course will be given at the allentown-bethlehem airport thirty hours a week of ground school instruction will be given in packard laboratory the ground school will consist of instruction in the simple sciences meteorology aerodynamics and civil air regu lations the instruction will fall under the accelerated program and will last eight weeks it will deal with the elementary phase of the civil ian pilot training program among the 30 are two lehigh men who left school in the spring to join the navy these are francis j dunigan i e 44 and badgley a elmes bus 43 the trainees will be housed in price hall and will eat at lamber ton hall busses will be used to transport the students to and from the airport trainees to get flight ground school course thirty v-l and v-5 men have been sent to lehigh by the navy to take a caa flight and ground school course 3-hour exams will be held 30 navy men to take caa curtis schedules period july 13-15 the examination schedule for the first eight weeks period has been released by the office of the registrar the examinations three hours long will be held from monday morning july 13 through wednesday afternoon july 15 principle used in constructing the schedule was to put examina tions in all classes at 8 a m on a given half-day all classes meet ing at 9 a m on another half-day and so forth it was not possible to combine sections for a single examination period ceremonies held in taylor stadium saturday morning dr williams introduced the feature speaker of the morning francis b sayre former high commissioner to the philippines dean wray h congdon acting as chairman-announcer for the program introduced mayor rob ert pfeifle and acted as narrator during the demonstrations offered by the civilian defense corps ex plaining the working of the units involved as the theme of his address mr sayre stated it is not only am erica's rights which are now at stake it is humanity's rights built in reading in 1884 this railroad engine model is now in working order it is charcoal fired and will run on steam pressure of about 50 pounds rails of authentic scale have been bought in california to complete the model presented by john r wait 06 the engine is now on
