lehigh university brown and white wmttl vol 85 - no 48 bethlehem pa tuesday april m 1974 forum committee heads set goals for next year by eileen canzian the present structure of the lehigh forum is not conducive to committees narrowing their scope said ira schulman 76 newly-elected chairman of the forum's academic environment committee the definition of the four present standing committees is far too encompassing in breadth to allow for a concentrated effort in any few major areas he said schulman said he hoped a reorganization of the forum's structure to allow the committees to narrow the scopes of their charge would be a concrete achievement of forum v he added however that the academic environment committee's efforts will be concentrated upon continuing work in the areas of tenure and admissions in addition to reporting to the forum recommendations of the tenure sub committee chaired by frank hook professor of english schulman said the academic environment committee will be investigating faculty salaries faculty responsibility to the university and faculty course loads the academic environment com mittee will rely heavily on faculty input schulman said it would be a shame for faculty antipathy towards the forum to hinder the committee's progress especially in the tenure area according to ferdinand beer professor and chairman of mechanics and mechanical engineering and chairman of forum v's administration committee one of the most important things that the forum could do is to view the resources of the university and see how they can best be used beer defined resources as the ad ministration faculty university services and the university's physical plant ad ding that he hopes the manner in which the university budget is arrived at can also be examined by his committee we want to see that these are being used in the op timum way he said adding that these suggestions are not necessarily criticisms an evaluation of resource use is necessary from time to time he said the university must make do with what we have and do it in the best way he said beer added that these evaluations would be in the best interest of university students since tuition costs are rising he ferdinand beer u technician is notified of discharge arthur s groff , university community relations technician has been fired ef fective july 1 1974 after being notified last friday groff said he was very upset because he doesn't want to leave the university he said he wasn't given a specific reason for his firing but after thinking about it for a couple of days he said he thinks his firing may be best for both him and the university groff said about himself i speak up i become controversial ... but i don't want to be controversial and that some misunderstandings because of this may be part of the reason he said he works 60 to 80 hours a week and only takes one week of vacation a year although he is entitled to four weeks a year but he said that possibly the university wants to cut down on the job and make it easier i fought to keep the union out and i'm the first to get fired groff said and added that the university is helping him find a new job i'll still support lehigh at football games i'll pay to get in he said and i think it's been a great experience i guess it'll work out okay smith says late decision caused contract trouble by dave klucsik the student activities council sac should have acted about a month ago in deciding the best proposal for the 1974-75 epiphany film series according to sac president brenda smith the sac last week rejected a proposal submitted by sam alfano 77 and mike exstein 77 because it was submitted after the published deadline the sac had twice accepted the alfano-exstein proposal although they were not aware of the late submission at the first meeting smith said the contract should have been drawn up about a month ago but elections of new members and officers and the submission of film proposals delayed action on the film contract she said the contract is presently being worked out and will be submitted for committee ap proval this week smith said the procedures for sub mitting bids for the films will probably change in the future we've got to change she said we can't go through this hassle again last week alfano and exstein had protested the rejection of their proposal although they conceded it was submitted late they contended that the second most acceptable proposal had been revealed prematurely in supposedly secret film proposals smith said if we would keep on deliberating we would be left with nothing for next fall's film series she said a decision had to be made and in this case the decision was legal she also said that deadlines involving past sac matters were not always strictly observed but were accepted late because there was sufficient reason to warrant the delay she also said in an earlier interview that amounts of money were not at issue in past delayed sac matters smith added that the film proposals were not accepted or rejected merely on the grounds of the lowest bid but from a combination of factors involving cost profits provisions for covering losses and other agreements between the sac and the proposal sponsors calculator use during exams is prohibited the use of calculators during math and accounting exams will be officially prohibited announced arthur pitcher professor and chairman of mathematics and robert mills professor and chairman of accounting the fact that not all students can afford them and that the calculators are of little use in a test on the concepts of mathematics were given as reasons calculators will be officially banned from all math exams as of summer 1974 pitcher said this includes slide rules as well as electric or electronic models when asked for reasons he said students who do not have calculators might think that they are not being treated fairly he added i would like to have the student fairly treated and to think that he is fairly treated pitcher also explained that a calculator is unimportant in the study of calculus he said that it is the concepts that matter not the calculations mills stressed that the calculators were unfair to the students who didn't have one the student who has a calculator saves time that he can apply to other problems he added the mind should be able to perform simple calculations by itself asked if he felt that the ruling was unfair to students who had already purchased calculators mills said i feel that the amount of time actually done in calculations is really a small part of the total exam it can be done mentally he also said that students who have pur chased calculators can still get their money's worth by using them for homework residence halls security limited by budget size vandalism common the security is only as good as the amount of dollars you put into it plus the desire of people to make it work said bill jesse assistant to the dean of residence halls about the present security system in university residence halls some recent vandalism in various residence halls prompted demands for changes in the present security system specifically a television a typewriter and some other possessions were stolen from congdon house and windows were broken and handrails torn off the wall in richards house all the vandalism occurred in the early hours of the morning unless every section wants to keep one person up at all times there's not a lot we can do about it said jesse when asked whether or not the plan of wandering two-man security teams would still be in use next year jesse said the status for those teams was very un certain the future of the receptionist system in the centennials next year is also uncertain he said we are always hoping for suggestions and new ideas jesse said but our budget is limited the receptionist idea and the wandering teams were introduced on a trial basis each plan suggested for security deserves at least a one-semester trial he said there shouldn't be much of a problem with rh-n jesse said the physical construction of the new house will be very different and in addition to the lock on the outside door of each apartment there will also be a lock on the inside bedroom door he also said that each apartment in rh-n will house four people and it should be much easier for four people to manage the house for those reasons rh-ll probably won't be subject to group disturbances jesse said see forum page 5 jazz ensemble the university jazz ensemble will perform
