shortage unless rh-12 is completed in 76 unless the university constructs a new residence hall complex for at least 200 students there is likely to be a critical housing shortage in 1976 according to a report by the residence halls office the brown and white has learned that the report states that in order to avoid a crisis the new complex rh-12 must be ready for occupancy in september 1976 the report points out that the reason for the predicted shortage is the projected increase in undergraduate enrollment university president w deming lewis has stated that the undergraduate student body will expand to 4,000 from its present size of 3,700 alternatives to new construction will not satisfy the university's residence requirements the report states and it recommends that new construction con tinue to add variety to the residence system the report maintains that it is imperative for the new complex to be built close to dining facilities and maintains that new housing could have a positive effect on the operating deficit of the dining service according to the report construction of new housing is financially feasible and is in fact financially preferable to alter natives such as undergraduate housing in smags or off-campus it states that smags is not a desirable way to solve the housing problem and suggests that the saucon valley apartment complex be devoted entirely to graduate students university properties within the master plan boundaries and adjacent to the university were examined and it was determined that unreasonable ex penditures would be needed to prepare them for student occupancy the report notes that increased enrollment of women increases the critical factor because women have a higher long term continuation rate in the residence system which may result in a further reduction of desirable housing for up perclassmen the report was completed in december 1973 and has been sent to the ad ministration b&w photo by cramer w deming lewis only to incoming freshmen but to students in one college who know nothing about courses given in the other colleges restricted courses committee member ed cor win suggested that the committee should look into restricted courses he said that certain colleges have been restricting the enrollment in some courses to students in that college only rich boig reported that 16,000 is allotted for freshmen engineering coun sellors boig said that the committee should look into this tutoring method the engineering college uses the program because the dean of engineering said it was necessary boig added in rooney the congressman for this district no changes will occur in tenure lewis says by martin baron it is unlikely that in the near future there will be any changes in the tenure system according to university president w deming lewis speaking in an interview with brown and white editors the interview touched on a number of topics ranging from residence needs and campus expansion to his attitude toward the forum the tenure structure is forcing us into a situation where we have an unfortunately high proportion of faculty with tenure lewis said he added that should a bad financial situation arise which he did not predict the possible excess of tenured , professors might create problems we too might have to let some tenured people go this might become a very serious matter asked what role students should play in the tenure process lewis granted that student input into tenure decisions is very healthy but he favored keeping this input informal i don't think an appointment should be a popularity contest he said i do think student input should have a part in regard lo the residence system lewis declined to say whether a new residence complex would be constructed i'm not ruling rh-12 out but i'm not going to say at this time that we're going to have it he said thai should new housing be made available il would be desirable to have it close to the main campus among the possibilities for new housing mentioned by lewis were a terrace-style complex near m&m or the construction of an apartment house located either on the site of the college theater or the parking lot of broughal junior high school lewis said that ultimately the stadium will be moved to saucon valley although this will not happen in the next 10 years he claimed that il would cost about 5-million to construct a new stadium questioned on how he arrived al the 5-million figure i-cwis said that it was estimated from a 3 million figure of a few years ago by con sidering increased building costs but he acknowledged thai it was a number pulled out of a hat while maintaining that the possibility of a lehigh law school is not dead lewis said he does not foresee it becoming a reality in the next 10 years i personally don't think it is very likely i don't see it in the cards lewis said a source of funds for a law school is the main problem commenting on a previously proposed bootstrap law school he said i don't want to see a law school start out at a marginal level and then build up as opportunities present fishkin death is reviewed by insurance companies insurance companies representing lhe parents of mitch fishkin and delta phi fraternity are now reviewing the fishkin death according to h victor pratt president of the delta phi alumni association the possibility of university
