brown and white vol 79 - no 26 bethlehem pa - friday feb ». 1968 866-03u by glenn a&tgood gates chained shut last semester the parking situation on campu cum to the fore when the city of bethlehem eliminated 28 student parking spaces on the left downhill side of taylor street in front of grace hall the action created bedlam along packer avenue and taylor street in the eighth street lot and in dean brennaaps office forced to find other places to park students soon began parking along the dge of upper taylor fism last week tfcs untvarslty athletic tepftrtimiit close upper taylor field to all parking under the direction of william leckonby director of athletics the gates leading to the upper field have been chained shut and two signs reading no parking any time cars will be towed at owners expense 1 * have been placed behind the gate the action by the department appears to have caught the university administra tion as well as students by surprise university treasurer elmer click chair man of the ad hoc committee on parking established by university president dr w demlng lewis has scheduled a meeting to discuss the situation with leckonby on monday leckonby said he took action to close the field following two incidents at the end of last semester when an athletic department truck entering the gates slid into two student cars parked along the edge of the field he noted that the department had put up " no parking signs along the edge of the field which students knocked down this prompted him to chain the gates and put up new signs he noted that the park ing situation created on campus as a result of the closing of the field is net cur problem it is the university's problem he maintains that upper taylor field is the only athletic field left on the lower campus the importance of upper taylor field as a student parking facility has been out lined in a memorandum on future campus parking from university vice president for development paul j franz the memorandum concluded " taylor field re presents the most immediate and satisfactory answer to the worsening parking conditions 1 * meanwhile the parking situation on lower campus continues to worsen compli cated with the parking violations incurred by many fraternity men during freshman rushing dean brennan's office has been swamped with violations upper taylor field closed to parking moravian acts after broad st raid by alan b soschin an 18-year - old moravian college freshman who was arrested in a feb 1 nar cotics raid on a watt side rooming house was indefinitely suspended from school on the following day christopher weidner , one of eight persons arrested in connection with a raid by bethlehem police on the rooming house at 821 w broad st was suspended for what moravian authorities termed frequenting a disorderly house although it was determined that a substance confiscated in the raid was mari juana the police laboratory in harrisburg had not released this information at the time weidner was suspended moravian's united student government usg responded vigorously to the school's actions demanding reinstatement of weidner clarification of the disciplin ary procedures at moravian and adop tion of the code of student rights t forth by the american association of university professors aaup usg ask d for a reply from the student per sonnel office by monday the executive committee of morav ian's aaup also met and drafted a letter to dean richard stanley dean of stu dents asking for clarification of proce dures for student disciplinary actions at moravian there is reported to be no written policy prescribing due pro cess procedures in disciplinary cases the student personnel office decides the guilt or innocence of a student if b * » photo fey mccaffrey britan to give lecture at u f h hinsley of st john's college cambridge university distinguished british historian and authority on inter national affairs will spend the week of feb 18 on campus as the blaustein visiting scholar in international rela tions the historians will meet with classes and seminars in international relations and will present a lecture on feb 22 in the university center his subject will be our one divided world reflections on the present state and further devel opment of the international situation the feb 22 lecture is being present ed in addition to the annual blaustein lecture series the lecture series has brought a world statesman to lehigh for the last three years the annual lectureships established through a gift from the jacob and hilda blaustein foundation were inaugurated at the university in 1068 with sir denis brogan noted british authority on in ternational affairs as the initial lectur er subsequent blaustein lectures were gen maxwell d taylor in 19*6 and paul henri spaak of belgium in 1967 the parking fines bring suit a . 22-year-old pre-law student at the . university of south florida tampa fla has sued the university and the state board of regents lor 100,000 each because of tickets he received on campus for illegal parking harold hooks claimed the university had the right to set traffic regulations and to ticket offenders but said the school's constitution gave the right to fine to the nearest municipality see brit an page 14 see pot page 14
