mr s o hayes of westinghouse co speaks on outdoor sub-stations coles star center forward of garnet sends deciding shot thru brown & white goal opening game of season results in a decisive defeat of local team score 34 to 18 melniker leads in scoring — lees plays consistent game at center many alumni student group representatives and athletes hold big booster banquet at kurtz restaurant saturday evening ray mccarthy elected captain okeson outlines plan for bettering athletics bosey hop walters and tom keady make inspiring speeches the banquet okeson's plan continued on page four swarthmore nosed out the brown and white eleven on saturday by a 3-2 score and clinched the penn sylvania state intercollegiate soc cer association crown in one of the most spectacular games ever staged on the garnet's field opening up with a speedy offensive game swarthmore managed to slip two tallies past in lehigh's goal before the latter team started pulling to gether but lehigh came back strong and before the end of the half mutch headed in the ball on a corner kick for gonzales both teams tightened and neither managed to score again before the whistle blew ending the period from the opening of the second half the brown and white assumed the offensive and by a series of dazzling plays worked the ball to the swarthmore goal from where newlin shot one home from a cor ner kick with the game at a tie both teams battled nip an 1 tuck the play changing from one terri tory to the other kept the elevens on edge and each made several unsuc cessful attempts for a score with the garnet rooters cheering madly for a score coles who had been playing a remarkable game at cen ter forward worked the ball to wards the lehigh goal and sent it past brewer for the deciding score the lineup as follows minute halves freshmen five loses season opening game last thursday the freshman basketball team officially opened up their season unfortunately their first game which was played with the young men's league of the first moravian church south side ended in defeat however the i team was somewhat handicapped in that they had to play on a very small floor and under a very low ceiling being used to a large floor and a high ceiling they found it very hard to work their passing game the young men's league on the other hand were on their own floor and quite at home which undoubtedly had quite a lot to do with the final score however the game was played hard and fast and it is fair to say that the 17-12 defeat would have been a victory if the game had been played on a regula tion sized floor the hicks mnounced that mr s o hayes of he westimghouse electrical co vould speak on outdoor sub stations a n d switching equip nent the lecture to be illustrated mr hayes who has been in the service of the westinghou'se co tor 25 years was well qualified to ipeak on the subject he opened ids address by showing a slide of he united states which pointed ut the chief transmission stations f the country almost all of the ater ones have been out of door systems these having been found o be very efficient this system is ised much more in this country han abroad several pictures were shown of he early transformers the great rouble with that type was in keep ing them cool and because of that they could not be used to very great advantage this problem has been solved in several ways the present type of transformers have exterior radiators and some are water cooled the water cool ing system is not used very much except in transformers whose ca pacity a above 8000 or 9000 k.v.a for then the self contained system is not sufficient several pictures were then shown of modern oil circuit breakers some of these are as high as 20 feet with insulators 7 feet in diameter and 11 feet high these being able to open up as high as 1,250,000 kv a then some large bushings and rain shields were used in order that the break down voltage should be high also some pictures were shown of several different styles of disconnecting switches among the problems to be solv ed in these outdoor stations is the question o f lighting protection this is done by arrester tanks which are steel tanks in which trays are fitted the tank is filled with oil lightning discharges vary in different parts of the country in colorado they are continual while 1 continued on page four musical clubs plan for future concerts the last rehearsal for the man dolin club until after the holidays will be held thursday night at 7 o'clock i n drown hall the preparation thus far has been very successful having large turnouts for every rehearsal and many new and up-to-date pieces having been learned the men have shown re markable ability and music has been played which very few man dolin clubs would even attempt along with the more classical numbers several new popular num bers will appear on the clubs pro gram this season and every thing points to a season equally as suc cessful if not more so than lasl year the first concert will be giv en in bethlehem sometime in feb ruary but the final place and date have not yet been chosen last continued on page three on friday afternoon at 4 o'clock a very interesting and educational film was shown in the physics lec ture room a lehagh alumnus mr o b nieson e m 10 at present with the trojan powder co of allentown showed pictures illustrating the work of his com pany this organization manufac tures a new explosive trojan powder which is coming into gen eral use as a substitute for dyna mite and nitro glycerine the nlms presented showed the results of tests made with this explosive and the results which it produces in ac tual use among the mechanical forces which we have brought to our aid in engineering work none has play ed a greater part than explosives in supplementing human labor mod ern explosives represent chained energy ready at the will of man to exert work effects of a magnitude and intensity hard to believe with in the imprisoned charge of ex plosive there exists potential energ capable of even rending mountains and which can accomplish results in a fraction of a second which even an army of a hundred thousand ■laborers could not do in 1 a li^e time trojan powder has a number of unmistakable advantages it doe c not freeze and accordingly can be used in even the coldest weathei without thawing and without it strength being reduced in any way it is much less sensitive to shocks and blows incident to use and ha>nd continued on page three football asst mgr elected at college meet last friday morning at a special college meeting held for the pur pose of electing two men to be assistant managers of football next fall h h dußois and j a todd were elected it will be noticed that this plan is different from that formerly in op eration at lehigh this year the athletic association has decided that in the future the football team will select six men from the sopho more candidates for asst manag er and that these men will in turn be voted on by the student body who will choose two of these men to be asst managers in their jun ior year at the end of that per iod the athletic committee will appoint one of these two men to be the manager in his senior year formerly only three men were chosen by the football team one of whom was elected by the student body to be assistant manager in his junior year and manager in his senior year the six men who were chosen by the football team and whose names were presented to the student body for the final elec tion were h h dußois h d gihon w e klaas j f sprague j a todd and f f wright hank gulick made art an nouncement in regards to several signs and lanterns at the time of the perm state p-rade he urged the men to return any signs or lantern that they might know about as the arcadia is responsible and if the signs are not returned may be re quired to pay for them several other announcement were made and the meeting ad journed lehigh opened her basketball season last saturday afternoon in taylor gym by easily defeating the moravian college five by the score of 34-18 after the brown and white quintet once hit its stride moravian college did not have a chance and it was only the foul shooting of rice which made them look like they were in the game at all rice got off to a bad start on his foul tries but after he had missed the first three he start ed to ring them in and scored ten out of the remaining eleven chances the lehigh attack was very good throughout the whole game and there was a great deal of accuracy in scoring from the field melniker surpassed everyone else in the first half in scoring totaling five double deckers during the first 20 minutes lees was right behind him and had three when the first half closed maurer didn't get started right un til the second half but was the leading scorer in this period the moravian team started right in at the beginning as if they were going to give the brown and white five a good run and for fully three minutes the teams battled to a standstill frain was the first to break the ice when he scored a point from a free toss then the lehigh team fell right into scoring frain registered the first field goal on a pretty try from the side mel niker followed with another goal turner made the first score for the visitors by scoring a double-decker then goals in quick succession were dropped in by melniker lees anid w springsteen the goal made by the latter was a long one from the middle of the floor which went through without touching the rim the lehigh onrush was halt ed for a moment in which rice scored a foul and neitzel a field goal melniker added two more ringers and maurer scored his first field goal captain turner of the visitors registered again from the field bringing the score to 23 to 9 in lehigh's favor moravian put up a much better fight in the second half and altho they could but score one goal from j the floor they did put the damper on the lehigh field goal scoring to some extent the splendid foul i shooting of rice in this half en abled moravian to hold lehigh about even during the remainder of the game two fouls and a field goal by rice was the moravian way of starting the second half but this just seemed to stimulate maurer | who immediately dropped two i counters through the basket after rice had scored twice again on i fouls maurer and lees added two . more goals ► with such a safe lead coach ; murphy rushed marshall in the : i game for lees and scarcely was he i in before he had taken the ball down under the basket and scored a few minutes later hartung re 3 j placed frain at guard during the last five minutes of play the ball continued on page three the largest and most success ful football booster banquet ever planned at lehigh was held satur day evening in the kurtz restaur ant the football squad and coach 1 es were present along with two representatives from every fratern ity and living group and many prominent alumni from bethlehem it was a unique gathering of le high students and alumni consist ing of some 150 men the banquet began about seven o'clock and was an excellent affair the lehigh jazz orchestra kept the diners entertained with a selec tion of good snappy pieces the purpose of the banquet as stated by l bevan president of the athletic association was to honor the team to boost lehigh and tc hear suggestions of benefit to the college the outstanding feature of the evening was the plan outlined by w r okeson okey 96 for the building up and improvement of athletics in general this plan is published in another column be fore presenting this plan okey gave a very interesting talk dur ing his talk he said that he had re ceived an unfavorable impression caused by lack of feeling of res ponsibility on the part of students this is true also of alumni two out of three times the fault for a season of defeat lies with the col lege alone then he said that there are two ways to get a team one is to buy it ; the other is to make it it is easy to buy a team but professional ath letics s not sport it is business the other way is to make a team after a defeat the tendency is tc say let's get together and get a better team then you don't say here's my services but you offer your money then it is natural to use money for a team there are three steps in building up a football team the first step is to improve tht team get in touch with youi preparatory and high schools make friends with stars on their team and talk lehigh to them don't just say so and so is a good man but get after him get him ac quainted with lehigh see that he knows the place and wants to come here the next step after you get the material is to know that you have it see that it all gets out on the field and helps to make the team the first step is up to the students the second also but likewise up to the athletic com mittee to see that every man has a show and no more than a fair show continued on page two preamble the applicants for entrances to lehigh having increased the col lege is unable to accept them all it becomes increasingly necessary that a real effort be made by students and alumni to secure the best ma terial possible to fill our future lim ited freshman classes with this end in view and especially with a desire to obtain well rounded men who will shine mot only in the class-room but on the athletic field on the musical and dramatic clubs on the staffs of the college papers and in fact in all varied activities of college life we have formulated the following plan to secure and re tain as large a number as is possible of such students this plan is to be submitted to all lehigh clubs and to the college and alumni body at large for discussion plan 1 every year each fraternity and each dormitory section is to look up at least one promising high school or prep school athlete they are to visit him at his school and if they find him interested in lehigh they are to invite him to visit our college as their guest if possible this should be done from a year to two years in advance of the time he is ready for college so that he can make several visits to our college and determine whether or not it appeals to him as the place he | desires to matriculate also to en able us to determine whether or not he is the type of student we desire to enter lehigh 2 each alumni club is to in augurate a system whereby the boys preparing for college in the schools in that locality can be carefully looked over and when a boy is found who seems to be of the type desired an effort is to be made to interest him in lehigh the 1 first qualification is to be character : the second scholastic attainment land third athletic ability or some ! other quality which will tend to niake him a leader in undergradu ate life in some way he must i ! stand out from his fellows these boys should be brought to lehigh i by the alumni of these clubs and . ; given a chance to see and taste of the college life in advance of mak ing a decision as to the college to : which they will go the under i graduates are to help him in the l entertainment of these young stud i ents so that they can get a real idea ! of what lehigh
