presented university president w demlng lewis a petition signed by more than 300 students requesting in immediate clear definition of university policy and an immediate and continuing discussion of this policy by those directly affected by it students faculty and administration at the presentation of the petition president lewis met with representatives of cure the presidents of ifc rhc the gryphon society and arcadia in the course of the 2|-hour meeting dr lewis agreed to bold an open meeting for the university community in packard lab auditorium 8 p.m monday when he will speak for one hour said jack irwin 68 a cure representative who attended the thursday morning meeting there will be a question and answer period at which either prof francis wuest or asst prof robert jones authors of the controversial environmental study will be present to speak and answer questions on the study said irwin it was the effects of the environmental study com mittee's as-yet unpublished report that brought about the formation of cure and resulted in the petition to lewis on monday about 40 students met to discuss a state ment by dr charles seldle vice president for administration that the study did not tell me anything that worries me • then wednesday evening over 100 students convened at theta chi to draft a petition to lewis the initial ideas of the monday meeting were refined and agreed upon by the members of cure the petition stated that " students and faculty must have a primary position in determining uni varsity policy four specific points were asked that action be taken on the findings of the study that a student-faculty-administration committee be established to examine the possibilities of lehigh becoming state-related to ease financial difficulties cited by the administration for the university's " unbalanced development — that eight students be elected to attend board of trustees meetings not to vote but to present student views — that ths faculty be directly represented on the board at yesterday's confrontation dr lewis said that dr seldle would probably speak at the meeting said irwin seldle said later however that hs was not present at the thursday morning meeting and that he had not been approached or invited yet to speak at the meeting he added that he would bs very happy to speak if he were invited seldle said that he waa very disturbed at the portion of the petition that stated that the under signed take exception to the short-sighted views expressed by him in the brown and white on april ». seldle was quoted as saying i don't see how we can put too much credence in student opinions because thsy are here only for such s short time and " the study didn't tell me anything that worries me seldle said that he does not seel that these statements reflect his position he said that in fact he has held a position exactly contrary to this for ths last 90 years arcadia to back strike for peace by dee mcallister in two surprise moves wed nesday night arcadia voted to abandon its apolitical stance by supporting the international stu dent strike for peace next friday and to send the proposed constitution back to an expanded committee for further consider ation steve globus 60 proposed arcadia support of the strike saying that the group should take an activist role in such matters although most solons abstained from voting on the issue only one actually opposed it on that day students and fa culty are supposed to avoid classes in sympathy for the issue also tnere will m s teach-in st moravian college that day to which lehigh students and faculty are invited on the constitution anticipa ting tho amount of discussion debate was limited to two min utes per member or one hour total « provisions of the korean war during august and september 1050 sen hugh scott bulletin about 500 students gathered at the flagpole in the center of campus at 11:30 this morning to nolsely protest the furtherence of cure's requests i president lewis unexpectedly showed up to announce that the group presented serious recommendations that deserve serious answers i lewis said that the protesters were " naturally free to go ahead admission offers up for negroes by 808 bachmann the number of negro students who have been offered admission to lehigh has more than doubled this year according to samuel h mlsslmer director of admis sion of the 37 negroes known to have ppltod for tbel*£b-69acadejaic year 25 have been offered ad mission seventeen of these men have also been offered financial aid totaling 87,000 however only two acceptances have been receive to date may lis the deadline mlsslmer indicated that both the office of admission and the university committee on finen clal aid recognize the need and responsibility of the university to seek out qualified black stucents in line with this associate di rector of admission james w mcgeady spent much of last oc tober and november going to pre domlnently negro schools in new york maryland virginia phi la d*elphia and washington dx to seek qualified negro applicants mlsslmer said we must continue to be more aggressive in this area he ad ded
