just before the selection of the queen a spanish dance depict ing the true meaning of the word saraband will be presented by luis m matamoros c e 45 a native of costa rica and his date the girls will line up in front of the bandstand and the chaper ones will vote for the woman they think should be queen when the votes are tabulated the queen will be announced and presented with the cup after the choice of 25 girls has been made they will be presented to the final judges who are capt and mrs samuel pierce lieut and mrs james d campbell and dr and mrs claude g beardslee all of whom are chaperones for the affair throughout the evening the members of the dance committee will keep their eyes open for at tractive dates the committeemen will wear brown and white rib bons and will place the same type of adornment on 25 girls this is the preliminary selection an eighteen-inch high silver loving cup will be presented to the queen of the saraband at ex actly midnight on june 27 dur ing the sophomore saraband matamoros 45 date will dance saraband dance queen will get cup blackout coining tuesday no light for studying students will have to devise new ways of getting their work done tuesday night june 23 since there will be an all-night blackout beginning at 8:30 o'clock in the evening and last until 6 in the morning all information concerning restrictions during the black out must come through the chief air raid warden of beth lehen as yet no instructions have been received by the university name 2 aides for coaching select leo pendergast ekaites for lehigh staff george l ekaites former head football coach of washington col lege chestertown maryland and leo prendergast coach of last year's freshman football team have been appointed as the new assistant varsity football coaches ekaites has been head football coach and director of intramural athletics at washington college since 1931 following his gradua tion from western maryland col lege eb caraway varsity baseball coach and assistant football coach of last year will take over the duties of business manager of ath letics and junior varsity football coach because of the accelerated program freshmen will be eligible to play on the varsity or junior varsity teams and the freshman team will be discontinued a 150 lb team is under consideration george hoban new head foot ball coach is the third lehigh man to coach at his alma mater when football was in its infancy at le high walter r okeson 96 coach ed the team in 1900 a austin tate 17 succeeded the late per cy wendell in 1928 and coached up to 1933 exclusively and now ho ban 15 who played with tate returns to take over the reins to resume work on upper field work will start again on the upper athletic field in about a week according to andrew h litzenberger superintendent of buildings and grounds action which ceased with the completion of the new track once more has been given the go ahead signal mr litzenberger said explaining that it was pro posed to put the field to active intramural use as soon as possible the new work will consist in leveling the field to the same ele vation as the track the painting job under way in packer hall off and on for the past year will be finished during odd hours this summer according to mr litzenberger the work is being done only when the men are not busy elsewhere on the cam pus another long 44 has been appointed art editor for the fall semester the bachelor plans to expand its staff for the coming fall term and requests all students interested to contact the editor-in chief within the making themselves very undesirable then it is time that something should be done action has start announce casts for one-act plays ed and is well under way ac cording to reports from delaware avenue and wyandotte street a total of 50 rats is claimed by alpha kappa pi which gives per sonal credit for 12 to the frater nity vook dan walker he be came expert at hitting them with a 22 calibre rifle at a distance of about 15 feet every time a rat stuck his head through a crack in the back walk he scored many of the hits placed directly between the eyes about 30 of the victims were however caught in your room did you know that there are two stuffed cranes which have been abandoned behind the stair case in packer hall these two birds have been standing quietly in the darkened corner for nearly a quarter of a century it seems that these cranes were a part of a collection given to the university many years ago of this collection professors of biology se lected those specimens best suited for their work and left the re mainder to be stored in the base ment of packer hall thus two cranes unwanted by the department finally found their way to packer hall but in transit they were lost stolen or strayed away from the rest of the group since 1917 these two lonely birds have made their home in an old showcase which has lacked glass for years formerly of white plu mage the cranes have taken on a dusty gray coat one of the birds is leaning against the wall as if tiring of its position throughout the years very few persons in the uni versity have ever seen these birds and only three or four know any thing about them why they are there and what they are doing there alone and not on exhibition these cranes stand waiting for a final transfer to the basement but they seem to have been forgotten long ago and now nobody cares whether or not these birds are ever brought out into the light of day lehigh university will become a repository during the coming year for sample yearbooks of close order drill the military department has announced the old springfields which are to be replaced by gar ands have all been shipped back to the arsenal a small consignment of garands has already arrived but since it did not contain enough rifles to enable the military department to furnish each student with one they will be used only for demon stration purposes such as instruc tion in stripping and assembly until the remaining consignment of garands arrives the military department has decided to keep the students busy on some new as signments which will train them in other phases of fighting one new wrinkle is the scouting and patrolling activities which for the first time have made their ap pearance on the lehigh campus each week during drill one company will be assigned to scout ing and patrol duty these activi ties will be carried out in the up per campus area in and about sarye park the placement office is already receiving in quiries from industry and government regarding seniors who are to complete their work in january or before to answer these inquiries satisfactorily it is absolutely necessary that the office have a place ment record card from each senior as soon as pos sible students who have already obtained after-grad uation jobs or who plan to do graduate work or to enter the armed forces should fill out cards anyway and should inform the placement bureau of their probable future status
