lehigh university brown and white vol 1 1 mo 28 866-0331 bethlehem pa tuesday february 3 1970 eight lafayette students charged with drug and narcotics violations last wednesday afternoon eight members of the lafayette college chapter of kappa sigma fraternity were arrested on charges of possession and use of narcotics and dangerous drugs and with conspiracy the raid took place at the fraternity house on the lafayette campus those arrested include william kellow 21 a senior of 163 washington st phillipsburg james bowen jr 21 a senior of wanamassa n j lewis price 20 a junior of silver spring md franklin fisher 19 a sophomore of lehighton r d 4 thomas l toth 21 a junior of 219 pershing avenue phillipsburg james reglna 19 of 141 ann st easton andrew lee bates 21 a senior of binghamton n y and jonathan santa maria 19 of westport conn bail was set at 10,000 for six of the suspects the other two kellow and santa maria had bail set at 25,000 and 5,000 respectively . in addition phillipsburg has also filed charges ligainst kellow for unlawful possession of narcotics herman harms phillipsburg magistrate set bail at 5,000 only kellow now remains in custody the other seven involved have arranged bail over the past few days the raid was a joint effort of the easton police pennsylvania state police the northampton district attorney's office and officials from the u.s customs and post office departments the raid was the result of a lengthy investigation and surveillance it netted a supply of lsd and amphetamines and five-and-a-half pounds of marijuana easton justice of the peace joseph fritzo said a hearing date for the eight has not been set b&w photo by steele x marks the spot where bill gacki was assaulted by unidentified assailants saturday night he was walking towards the university center at the time gacki reported to the health center after suffering minor injuries economist to scrutinize federal economic policy milton friedman a right wing economist and critic of federal government monetary policies thursday will conclude a series of lectures and penal discussions entitled the wonderful world of economics friedman will lecture ln packard auditorium at 7:30 p.m on intentions vs results ot government economic policy friedman is well known in the field of economics for his so-called friedmanist doctrines which attack the federal reserve system's solutions to stabllzlng tbe nat ional economy in establishing his ideas friedman follows the philosophy that only money matters as author of a monetary history of the united states he states that economic instability occurs primarily from major fluctuations in the money supply friedman concerns himself not only with government monetary policies but also with the individual in a free market he proposes a negative income tax as one solu tion to end poverty and a voucher slip to free students from a bureaucratic educational system in addition hi s plans include doing away with welfare urban renewal medicare and social security born in brooklyn friedman attended rutgers university and the university of chicago he is now a professor of economics at the university of chicago arcadians to elect vp at thursday session arcadia will elect a new vice-president thursday from among the three candidates nominated at the last meeting open nomi nations will also be accepted at the wednesday meeting before the election the present candidates are bill alpert bob fraz 1 e r and rich sedmak a t wednesday's meeting the candidates will give their statements all interested persons are urged to attend the election will fill the position left vacant by hal johnson's recent resigna tion prior to the decision to hold an election within the ranks of arcadia jim kasser president of arcadia had men tioned the possibility of holding a popular election within the university the possi bility was regarded as impractical among those eligible for vice presidential position were two - at - large candidates the new members are kenneth rl lander and mar vine levlne the offices were vacated after two members were deemed ineligible for academic reasons senior beaten and robbed on u campus a lehigh senior was assaulted and robbed on the university campus saturday night bill gacki of congdon house said the incident occured near lamberton hall at il:3op.m the assailants were des cribed ss about seven well dressed youths with spanish accents gacki said he was punched around a bit and that a wallet containing 30 was taken following the incident three uni dentified freshmen helped gacki to the health center where ha was treated for minor cuts and bruises and released ifc accuses 7 fraternities of dirty rushing by robin reinhold last friday seven fraternities were referred to the inter-fraternity council ifc judiciary committee for accusa tions of illegal rushing during the past weekend dan breene 70 chairman of the ifc fact finding committee , stated that here appeared to be a misunderstand ing in the rushing schedule the cases will go before the judiciary committee on charges of illegal rushing dinners prior to the incidents the ifc rushing committee sent two notices in forming all fraternities that rushing fresh men from friday at 1 2 noon to monday at 12 noon was illegal craig hagelin chairman of the judici ary committee stated that he had no know ledge of the proposed date for the hearing william smith president of alpha chi ro stated that he did not know the date the fraternity must appear before the committee smith refused further com ment on the incident walter talbot rushing chairman of lambda chi alpha stated that there was a misunderstanding several fraternities believed permission was granted to hold the dinner according to talbot walter ginn 70 president of pi kappa alpha had no comment on the charges brought against the fraternities he added let it go through the ifc ju diciary committee if it comes up the other fraternities were unable to be contacted the names were withheld pending on further investigation if any fraternity is guilty of the char ges the house can receive a fine or the loss of its rushing privileges according to breene he added that since rushing regulations have been liberalized inci dents have tended to decrease which leads him to believe that the incidents were probably misunderstandings pheea pennsylvania higher edu cation assistant agency renewal applications for the pheaa grant-in aid program for the forthcoming year are being mailed to current recipients the filing date is april 30 there is no filing date for veterans of the armed services and for students from familities whose principal wage earner is retired disabled or dead don't just stand there angry with lehigh's monolithic bureaucracy of committees or may be the administration in general don't think students are getting a fair shake or maybe you're sick and tired of the brown & white's approach to news coverage and would like to see a different editorial stance on campus issues in either case join the b&w and change the situation
