student membership on the joint committee on university life jcul were released yesterday those elected included john cornish 71 representative of the engineering college john graham 71 business college representative don miles 71 at-large member frank puzio 72 repre sentative of the arts college and peter waldes 72 at-large member cornish stated his reason for running as he felt the fraternity system needs more representation he continued i will act in the best interest of the fraternities graham expressed his position saying i hope we can with this committee im prove the life at lehigh he went on to touch on the residence problem and the coming of coeducation he said that he hopes jcul can straighten out the residence prob lem miles who gathered more ballot points than any other candidate said he intended to concern himself with two things in particular the first was the residence problem the other was the implementation of coeducation referringto the fart that jcul had approved the coeducation report miles said that he wanted to make sure coed would not be just a token effort he also mentioned that he would look into the concept of open jcul meetings puzio adopted a wait-and-see attitude he wanted to find out how much power we have he noted jcul has certain problems he felt he had to find out for himself waldes the only freshman elected said the conditions in the dorms are deplor able he felt his closeness to freshman problems would help him he noted that he would work to do my best to constructively change things during tne question and answer period w averell harriman answered quest ions posed by members of the audience harriman is concluding the last of his three lectures at the university peace coalition makes plans to protest draft spring moratorium activities including a march anti draft week were discussed by the lehigh valley peace coalition here tuesday the coalition consisted of representa tives from allentown college of st francis de sales lafayette lehigh northampton community college the national demo cratic coalition and a clergyman larry kudlow regional coordinator for the national mobilization committee pre sented to the group the goals proposed for the spring at the national student anti war conference in cleveland on feb 14 expressing the hope of developing a broad based area for the spring's activities " kudlow went into a detailed outline of the activities planned for march and april the major event planned for march is an anti-draft week extending from march 16 through the 23rd organised events on the national level will take place on the 16th and the 19th with the remainder of the week dedicated to local action prior tothe week we won't go petitions will be circulated with the results of tbe petition drive announced on the 16th thursday is scheduled to be a national day of mass action of civil disobedience kudlow stated that his organization suggests sit-ins at draft boards on march 25 the the national moratorium committee will present the results of the we won't go petitions to the senate armed forces committee he said the goals of the march moratorium will be the broadening of the conscientest objector classification and to eventually abolish the draft he emphasised that all actions would be non violent in nature the april program is planned for the 27 attend meeting of jcul committee last tuesday twenty students and seven faculty members attended the first open meeting of the ad hoc committee on residence life at the university prof robert jones chairman of the meeting reviewed briefly the purposes and goals of the committee which divided its concern into three main areas according to jones selectivity made no headway ln the committee the second point of interest was the desirability of freshman segregation in tlie first semester " prof jones noted the consensus was that integration was necessary the freshman year did not fit into any coherent pattern of university life however " he continued upon receiv ing 668 responses to a freshman questlonnnaire it was found that 9 per cent liked the system as lt was 47 per cent favored segregation but sought improved social life 30 per cent preferred residence halls integration while only 12 per cent would have liked to see a lengthened orientation period that would include rushing the results have caus ed the committee to review its conclusions finally he referred to the major con cern of the future direction of the residence system at lehigh the blueprint of future living prof roger shatter chairman of the subcommittee on needs and resources stated the purpose of his subcommittee ln resolving the question of what the university should built in the mure whether it should be the same or different type of con struction—and whether the students would be satisfied with present dorms in the future expanding the top professor george conardh chairman of the emulatable model subcommittee said that a small amount of hard information was available but cited two studies that had taken place in california that stressed students preferences over architectural prizes and cost per student factors in determining residence con structions according to the berkeley and all-california studies professor conard stated that students apparently want suites single rooms available as an option no big furniture showrooms downstairs no built-in furniture and non-uniform rooms flexibility to suit the student of the future is a further consideration that can not be overlooked he added elaborating further he introduced the ideas of building houses on the hill to accommodate 6 8 or 10 students and dean of residence clarence harriman eyes future of world i'm not very good at prophesying were the words of former ambassador w averill harriman as he presented the concluding lecture in the blausteln lecture series in grace hall thursday night it's very dangerous to do any predicting he continued as he discussed the future segment of his three-part presentation of u.s and soviet relations in a changing world his thoughts on the future are based largely on past experiences he emphasized two points the need for u s initiative in american soviet relations and the potential of youth in shaping world policy harriman said that we are allowing the government to get away from us in his words government is here to be the servant of the people not the reverse that the people are to be the slaves of the government according to harriman a good relationship with the russians can be established only after we have an understanding of their mentality historically said harriman the russians are very suspicious of foreigners this suspicion is further compound ed by the aloofness which today's communists try to maintain in quoting leo tolstoy lie said to understand tlie kremlin of today you have to understand the kremlin of ivan the terrible and peter the great he continued by saying unless we make the gestures unless we move over halfway very little progress will be made ■to youth he said you can play a very important role in this country in regard to demonstrations harriman tends to be skeptical of their value instead he said i hope you will get involved in meetings where serious people will talk . ." with regard to students he said 1 am not at all disturbed by this generation of stu dents by and large i think this is the greatest group of students we've had in my lifetime the president said that we have to stay in vietnam to maintain the plausa billty of our words in the world that just isn't true he said that it will come with an honorable settlement of the war as soon as we give up trying to keep president thieu 1 n power in viet nam our voice in the world will have more credence harriman said tms idea that we're going to get along with china by estab lishing a 50 million defense just doesn't make any sense russia he says is just as concerned over china aa we are but our ganging up against china would be a mistake he continued they want to see a southeast asia aa india and pak istan strong and independent enough to check chinese advance to the south speaking out on nixon's state of the world address he quoted the new york times saying that there is more rhe toric than action he said that the only progress nixon has made la ln curtailing bacterialogical and chemical warfare concerning the most underdeveloped countries of the world he said we have an interest to do our share refering don miles see open page 9 see future page 9 see anti-draft page 9 a
