and dan gerous drugs charges after police con ducted a search in his drinker hall room according to a call-chronicle article police broke into green's room and con fiscated what they believe to be are 150 grams of cut mescaline 18 grams of uncut mescaline 149 caps of mescaline 20 grams of hashish a bag of peyote and a bag of marijuana police estimate that they have confis cated about 4000 worth of narcotics all drugs confiscated and a bag of unidentified seeds will be sent to the state police laboratory for analysis green a resident of edgeworth allegheny county is currently i'ree after posting 10,000 bail he is charged with trafflcldne in and possession of dangerous drugs the raid came after a one month surveillance and was the second in two days conducted by bethlehem state police vice squad members arrested two men on drugs and morals charges the drug arrest marks the first action taken by bethlehem and state authorities on the university campus u asks washington to aid drug program a group of lehigh students has submitted a proposal to the federal government for the establishment of a broad spectrum drug abuse education program for the university and the surrounding communities according to the preliminary proposal initiated by thomas knoche 72 and richard chefetz 72 and signed by university president w deming lewis the budget for establishing the program is 32,235 students interested in working in this program should lt become a reality are requested to submit applications available at student activities desk by thursday may 13 faculty interested in this program are requested to see miss barbara solt uc 202 or dr william newman dept of psychology full copies of the proposal are available ln uc 202 the following are excerpts from the report the fact that dangerous and/or illegal drugs are readily available and used has marked effects on the entire community the incidence of drug use and abuse has continued to increase making evident the need for programs geared toward community education as a preventive measure and toward providing trained volunteers to handle the problem at all stages the general objectives of the lehigh university drug project include presenting extensive and objective drug information as a basis for valid decision making stimulating personal interaction and concern and providing some counseling and extensive referral services for individuals already suffering from various degrees of drug abuse freshman orientation program the executive board of gryphons in consultation with the associate dean of students has planned a program on tl_e drug problem for freshman orientation week it is strongly felt that an informed individual is inclined to deal with himself in positive ways thus we plan to expose the incoming freshmen to information which we hope will lead to constructive action and avoid the destructive behavior associated with drug abuse scare techniques are to be avoided we wish to promote an attitude of informed concern not fear the program in outline is as follows effects of anti-war movement unclear after week of protests by paul trautman the activities of the mayday tribe slogged to a close last week and it seems evident true to the president's declaration that few in the nation have been " moved many anti war demonstrators do not see cause for despair however rennie davis promises more nonviolent civil disobed ience to disrupt the government while james reston suggests that the mayday tribe actually did the government a favor " efficiency here increases in direct pro portion to the rate of absenteeism he said the shift to disruption and confronta tion from the pacific style of april 24 received general reproach from the press but the arrest wednesday of 1 14g peace makers on anti war move ment finished at a standoff the effort to disrupt business as usual at the select ive service office resulted in an early closing fridav because the office worked overtime wednesday the day harrassment began and civil service employees are limited to a 40-hour week yesterday students called off further activities returned to their books and sent flowers and thanks to the secretaries of the draft board office a demonstration against the board yesterday morning never mater ialized rut if the pro/anti-administration scales are once again balanced the fluc tuations of last week are not soon for gotten university student jay mcdermott recounted vivid tales of his arrest early mondav morning may 3 at about 6:30 a.m the demonstrators were proceeding through georgetown toward 22 target areas where they hoped to disrupt traffic they soon came upon grasping people who had already been gassed and so were forced to split into pairs if you were b&w photo by bittlingmayer over 200,000 demonstrators came to the steps of the capitol to peacefully protest the war in vietnam april 24 the may rallies became violent however and brought with them government suppression thus drawing criticism from moderates on both sides u forum revises 1972-73 calendar the university forum approved an amended proposal to restructure the 1972-73 school calendar yesterday the body also approved a proposal by the priorities planning and resources committee pp&r and a motion to reconstruct the old bookstore in the u.c it will be renovated and made available to the student body under the new calendar system each semester will continue to contain 14 weeks of instruction fall semester will begin aug 28 and end dec 21 the length of the reading study and consultation src period will be shortened to two davs bv tms proposal final examinations will be administered on the six days prior to the close of semester dec 21 spring semester will tentatively begin jan ig and terminate may 15 the rsc period would be reduced to two davs finals of both semesters will be reduced from three hours to two there was considerable debate on the proposal prior to its approval phil hunt 72 a member of the academic affairs committee viewed the proposal as advantageous and desirable by the students prof robert mills chairman of the accounting department spoke of his experience at large
