brown and white vol 7 - no 50 ssjmmmmlmmmmmmmlmwm bethlehem pa friday may 10 1968 ue-om mmwmmmmmww cure submits list of ideas by john gustavsen concerned undergraduates for responsible education and the arcadia academic policy committee informally submitted 81 proposals for an improved university at the faculty meeting last monday the proposals were submitted in response to faculty charges that cure has been too general to its demands for university improvements they were not intended to be requests for action but to prompt faculty members to consider concrete ideas norm monhait 70 chairman of the arcadia com mittee hopes the proposals will stimulate discussion and thought among faculty members he said he intends ' to research educational policy in amnmmi this ewnmsr and next semester to formally submit recommendations to arcadia and the president's ad hoc goals committee the fist of proposals is as follows 1 the membership of the board of trustees should include clergy government and education leaders and student and faculty representatives i a faculty senate should be created 3 students should be voting members of the educa tional policy committee ths committee should not include administration members 4 the power anueonimitiee structure of the university should be revamped 5 all university committees should have student members with voting privileges 6 reports of the visiting committee should be made public 7 the university should reiy less on what other universities have done and should he willing to exercise its own imagination and take its own risks 8 faculty and administrators should play a more important role to attracting controversial and worth white speakers and programs to campus 9 admissions procedures and goals should be clari fied aad revised if necessary additions to tbs under staffed admissions office should include a negro 10 the university should sot s goal of 160,000 in scholarships for negroe 11 building fund allocations and prioritise should be re-evslseted so that more funds are directed to the arte school is the university undergraduate school should be coeducational ss tee arts library should fa .-.*«*«*» u c _**- with more modern books and improvememg to col lections which lack books 14 foreign study including a junior year abroad new award scheduled for u flagpole day by jeff balsai a special award will be given at flag pole day monday to a member of the faculty on behalf of the student body for outstanding service to lehigh univer sity the award was created by arcadia and will only be presented this year flagpole day was originally started by arcadia in conjunction with the ath letic department to present outstanding athletes with awards for high achieve ments in their particular sports it grew over the years into the present day cere mony which also honors outstanding scholarship and leadership in addition to athletic achievement the presentations are still sponsored by arcadia and the athletic department this year's ceremony was planned by arcadian jeff parks and prof johnsteck beck assistant director of physical education the schedule for classes approved by the faculty for flagpole day provides that each class be shortened by ten minutes with the award ceremony inserted between the lunch periods the ceremony will run from 11:80 to 12.40 regular class bells will be ringing but will not be used the presentations will be held at the flagpole or to packard lab auditorium in case of rain steckbeck will act as master of cere monies raymond e fuessle university chaplain will give the invocation and haw photo by hoffheins no we're not quacking up hero we have a fine specimen ef one ef those u.c dinner delicacies long island duckling however this particular feel fowl downy daffy duck ascaped ths butcher's blade only to be captured by glitx pin mate of delta chi's mike gase 70 mike walks the duck each day and careful ! r supervises its diet nothing to caring for d.d duck says mike i just feed him milk and qu ackers doss d.d like ths menu no one knows for sure he ducked the question u theater needs outlined by neal arluck it seems to me that the time is ripe for decisive action by the university to sponsor the arts in a positive overt manner by making them more visible on the campus the arts have become a vital part of the education of lehigh students and the university can no longer afford to house them tn makeshift or hidden corners of the campus these remarks were made in a letter by dr paul kosel ka a member of dr lewis's creative arts visiting committee to professor h barrett davis ch_lrm_r s the division of speech davis included the tetter in ms talk on the prospects of a theater on campus at tuesday night's annual mustard and cheese banquet in the university center davis explained that the creative arts visiting committee made its first tour of the campus in 1966 inspecting the existing facilities including lamberton hall in all its glory the committee submitted a full report to dr lewis outlining lehigh's needs hut nothing waa done the committee made its latest visit to the campus just last week tuesday morning davis received the tetter from koxelka who is chairman of ths department of theater at teachers college columbia university and former presi dent of the american educational theater association speaking of the university's inadequate arts facilities kozelka wrote i'm thinking of the working quarters for the drama group and the music students the cramped quarters are not conducive to free artistic expression pm thinking too of grace hall wltn its sports arena atmosphere and of bro-ghal junior high school which to not suitable for events sponsored by a large university i don't aes how you can operate under the conditions imposed by grace rail and broughal if the drama proeram is to reflect truly the aims and obligations of a great uni versity the drama depart ment needs its own theatre at the earhest possible moment the theatre should have a small seating capacity and all the other factors you mention in your reports of november 22 1967 and january 17 l»«8 the reports referred to by koselka are the ones which dr charles seidle chairman of ths university theatre committee has r«iu»eu io release i'm thinking of the future continues koselka as well ss ths present with its own theatre a department could become a vital part of the life of ths campus community and region 1 by giving students s chance to experiment with lighting and scene design 2 by inviting a pfeywrif-t or actor in residence to work with students 3 by sponsor ing theatre festivals by colleges and ugh schools in tbs region community theatres could have s festival too ai lehigh " 4 by sponsoring a professional resident theatre com pany for the tri cities 5 by preparing a group of students to take part to the collegiate theatre festival ta washing ton spring 1949 sponsored by aeta and anta 6 by inviting professional theatre groups to s small genuine theatre theatre of ths deaf foreign companies arranged through the state department 7 by preparing a multi media show for the campus this can only be dees after many hours of preparation to tbs theatre where the show will be done davis said that ids own recommendation wae for a small theatre 250-350 seats st s cost of 1.5-2 million this would include about one-half million dollars of lighting equipment and complete dressing work and storacs rooms reviewing the theater situation during his 22 years st lehigh davis noted that when be wee hired to 1946 be era told about plans for a new building for the college of arts and sciences which wo-ld eonuin a email theater several years later he was shown an architect's drawing of an arts building with a theater to the middle . the plans obviously were never carried out b&w photo by hoffheins prof h barrett davis
