majors wmle not immediately ready for innovation at lemgh weu may become part of the lehisrh of tomorrow these concepts and other changes in the university came one step closer to realiration at the sixth annual kirby rouse con ference sept 9 and 10 tms meeting attended by more than 40 members of the administration faculty and student body dis cussed student involvement and change in the lemgh community kirbv house was designed to bring student leaders together with the ffcy»«lty and administration ln order to trade ideas and formulate a plan of action ln dealing with university affairs during the upcoming academic year in next friday's brown and white there will be a history of the student involvement movement at lehigh the movement will be traced from the birth of the committee of undergrad uate for responsible education cure and the environ mental study report through the kirby house conference and the university goals committees present position with the theme goals committee and its work it was not long before the conference participants singled out apathy as the over riding obstable in the path of the students ln their quest for innovation wltmn the university norm monhait 70 arcadia representative suggested that arcadia meetings and goals committee meetings be taken to fraternity houses and residence halls with the hope of giving more students the chance to participate in the groups wmch will eventually effect change on their campus tms idea was greeted enthusiastically with many stressing that all students not just the voting members of the various committees have much to contribute and if the students are made more aware of tms much of their apathy may dissolve kirby house was divided into five sessions with the first a dis cussion by professors r g jones and francis j wuest they stated that the problems faced at the university financial limitations concern with the definition of an educational philosophy and reform in academic programs student demands in decision making student concern for relevance ln academic programs and b&w photo by butt class of 70 council will replace cabinet the new class of 1970 council wmch replaces the existing cabinet form of government was approved last semester by an overwhelming majority of the new junior class according to bill taylor vice president of the class we stopped counting when we reached the necessary 3/4 majority the executive committee met yesterday afternoon to appoint the 18 council members wmch will govern the class in place of the 30 member cabinet the members were selected from a number of petitions entered last fall by class members mike morris president of the class feels that the largest problem in making up the council will be ln achieving a balanced representation of the class he hopes to be able to appoint four members each from the fraternity students and the residence hall students and two each from the gryphons and the town students taylor however said that no definite rr rubers neve been set yet and tnat perhaps the gryphons will get a larger representa tion because of their importance in campus activities the balance of the 18 members would consist of the two arcadia representatives and the four man executive board to insure the best representation morris said that university men would have to take greater interest in their class government he noted that the town students are significantly lacking iri candi dates for appointment this problem however was one which was forseen last semester by the cabinet when drafting the council provisions and " great pains are going to be taken to assure a balanced representation morris believes that the council will work tremendously he is looking forward to better communication within the governing body itself man of mancha presented sept 29 man of la mancha the award-winning broadway musical will be presented at the university on sunday sept 29 at 7:30 p.m in grace hall the hit play was previously scheduled for sept 26 but the date was changed at the request of the road company the play deals with a few crucial hours in the life of miguel de cerrantes author of don quixote david atkinson of the broadway troupe will star in the dual role of cervantes don quixote patricia maranda also of the new york cast will play aldonza tickets for the performance will go on sale beginning sept 12 they win be available in christmas-saucon hall at the division of speech office at t*ie university center activities desk and at ths office oi public information ln the alumni memorial building the play _ smash hit en both -._«• of the atlantic is being co-sponsored by the class of 1969 the class of 1970 the mustard and cheese dramatics club and the committee on performing arts and will launch the committee's 1968-69 series dr lewis welcomes frosh to significant opportunities dear members of the class of 1972 it is a great pleasure for me to welcome you to the lemgh campus you are about to begin one of the most significant and rewarding periods of your lives many rich opportunities for intellectual and personal development lie immediately ahead of you it will not all be easy but you are a highly selected and able class and i know you have it in you to continue to excel if you do so you will be laying firm foundations for later achievements in life both in the service of society and in personal fulfillment you will find all you need to reach full intellectual maturity in the classrooms and libraries and laboratories of lemgh in the living units the many and varied extra-curricular activities such as student government the many clubs and other groups and ths athletic and social programs you will find all you need tc round out your lives as university students you will have a wide choice of friends and perhaps for the first time ln your lives the way in which you use all these rich opportunities is primarily in your own hands the faculty and administration are here to instruct and counsel you but each of you is the real architect and builder of his own future i look forward to seeing you many times during the next four years cordially
