movement oc lehigh it took a lew years but finally a spark from the student uprisings st berkley blew bast snd landed oo the lehigh campus last spring ths spark found a climate while not conducive to ravaging fires aad mighty destruction that enabled it to live snd leave its mark on ths community this climate began to form during the 1966-67 academic year when two lehigh social scientists dr francis j wuest chairman of ths psychology department and dr robert g jones assistant professor of social relations undertook a study of the lemgh environment with the sld of s 2,500 grant from the office of president w deming lewis the " environmental study was born the professors took s sample of ths freshman class of 70 and using testing devices from the ecfcieational testing service of princeton nj compared the engineer frosh to various national norms the lehigh scientists found that the frosh on south mountain were mare from upper middle class families less independent of family and peer influence less liberal isss socially aware and less culturally sophisticated students also indicated that thsy thought less of lehigh m regard to sense of community awareness propriety and scholarship than students ai three other universities swarthmore purdue and san francisco state tmnk of their universities lehigh's arts students soul men sam and dave bring their new single can't yea fled another way te grace hall this saturday m a concert with their saa and dave re vue sponsored hy the class of 1970 70 executive committee forms new class council by lou lightpoot monday evening the executive com mittee of the class of 1970 met to form the recently approved class coyncil the committee consisting of mike morris president bill taylor vice president al eisley secretary steve nelson treasurer and arcadia represen tatives bill kuhn and don parsons reviewed the applications received from interested class members and selected the 12 men wmch they thought could best handle the responsibility of the job previously morris stated that achieving balanced representation among the various living divisions of the umversity would be the largest problem m forming the council tms wss found to be so a selection of four men each from the fraternity students and residence hall students and two each from the gryphons and town students would have achieved a perfect balance the distribution as it stands now is slightly less than perfect there are seven men from fraternities three from residence hefts and one each from the gryphons and town students according to taylor tms imbalance was caused by a lack of applications from all groups except the fraternity men the town students had only two men applying and many of the gryphons who were active last year did not express interest deans council issues view on drug use the deans council has issued a reminder that the use or distribution of illegal or dangerous drugs by any student without prescription will not be tolerated living groups are warned that they will be held responsible for condoning the " presence or use of or traffic m illicit drugs by members or guests within a house _■_ under group auspices students are also reminded that there are state and federal laws carrying heavy penalties prohibiting any association with dangerous drugs and marijuana the university feels that the hardening attitudes of society toward drug abuse cannot be ignored necessary disciplin ary action up to and including dismissal will be taken against tha drug offender nsa delegates confront environmental racism the lemgh university delegation to the 21st congress of the national student association joined 21 universities and colleges m demanding that their own credentials as representatives of racist institutions be challenged the challenges leveled by the delega tions of harper the umversity of california at berkley and davidson and the umversity of buffalo among others reflected the intense and troubled mood of the congress following a credentials challenge to the all-white delegation of the umversity of alabama the 21st congress m manhattan kansas centered itself around the issue of institutionalized racism m universities and colleges the university delegation stephen globus 69 and brain young 09 issued an appeal to ths congress that delegates confront the problem ln thsir own unl versitites rather than merely sc_p b ___ the umversity of alabama on aug 18th ths second day of the ten day congress delegates voted over whelmingly to oust ess cf alabama's white delegates and seat a black delegate sent independently by the university's afro-american society twenty-two delegations then announced that they would demand that their own credentials he questioned the credentials issued wss referred to the co m gross steering committee which voted to reeeet the white alabama delegate in protest black delegates from throughout the nation walked out of the congress the black alabama delegate wee eventuauy seated again many delegations said globes chair man of ths university delegation felt however that the desire of many nba officials sad members merely to seel ths black delegate and get on with the regular business of the association rep reseated a token gesture ideetspplng the fundamental _ mm q i!_-_!t»tic___i_ed racism ta american universities sad colleges although the credentials challenges were symbolic ln nature aald globus they represented positive action at a congress devoted to the concept of action yet hampered by s lack of unity sad resolution university nsa delegates voice objections to racism to the 21st congress of ths national student association from the delegation of lemgh university we ths lemgh university delegation to ths congress of ths national student asso ciation demand that the right of lehigh umversity to send delegates to tms congress be suspended snd to achieve tms end we ask that oor own credentials as representa tives of aa institution thet is racist ia environment be challenged we act out of a deep conviction that lehigh umversity represents a menhsets tion of s form of racism and reaction prevalent throughout ths entire american edu cational system — s covert sad implied wjrm that may bear little surface relation ship to the overt racist reality of ths university of a i sha me we believe that only by exposing this racism m oar own uni versity can we hops to encourage our colleagues to challenge and destroy similar manifestations ln thsir own universities and colleges leiiigh umversity is racist by
