the coffee house will follow the newman club is sponsoring bond under th auspices of the forum for visiting lecturers committee bond was twice denied his seat in the georgia legislature in 196 because he supported draft card burners he said i would not burn my own draft card but i admire the courage of those who do the u.s supreme court finally seated hi in in the legislature and he was elected to a second term last year he ted an insurgent georgia delegation to the democratic convention this summer after a credentials fight bond's delegation was given half of the georgia vote following the presidential nomination of hubert humphrey bond was nominated for vice president by disappointed delegates he later withdrew since he didn't meet the minimum age requirement bond has spoken extensively in the last two years across the country at colleges and has been active in the civil rights movement sam and dave singing one of their memphis soul sounds at the concert last saturday in grace hall appearing with the duo were johnie kay and the mirrettes student expression aim of free press by jeff balsai a new publication the " free press , appeared on the campus last week ac cording to erie crouse 71 , it is a forum in which any student can present his views on any topic he chooses 1 crouse who originated the project with sophomores jeff collman and robert beasley and seniors randy dlx alan minskoff paul levy and martin tucker said the publication was created primarily because the group felt a need for a forum for discussion in which in dividuals with ideas relevant to the lehigh community can express their views crouse believes the brown and white does not have the editorial format to do this he said the brown and white is more factual than the free press and so cannot offer as much to express individual students ideas crouse said that the group believes that the free press will stimulate the student body by making it possible to have their own opinions expressed he stated that within our budget we're willing to publish anything that's fairly well-written and contains no personal attacks or profanity the views expressed in the articles can range from conservative to new left he said but the articles must bear the signatures ci their iui.iiors according to crouse the " free press idea was originally that of two separate groups.the seniors and the sophomores presently involved with the publication created the idea during the summer in dependently and consolidated when they discovered each other's plans crouse said the publication is financed presently by the people involved in it he said that the group hopes it can eventually get university support if the project seems worthwhile to students and faculty articles in last week's edition deal with the new coffee house praise ish mael the freshman literary magazine instituted last year ask why the university cannot affllate itself with a women's college , and appeal to the freshman to become involved in university life crouse emphasized the need for people willing to help in all aspects of the publication anyone interested can con tact either me or randy dlx he said result of election poll to be published friday yesterday and today the brown and white conducted a presidential preference poll the results of the poll which only con siders the three major presidential can didates will be published on friday in the poll the students indicate their preference for humbert humphrey demo cratic presidential candidate richard nixon republican party nominee or george wallace american indepen dent party candidate two more polls are planned , one on oct 15 and the other on nov 1 following the publication of the last poll the three surveys will be compared polls are taken in fraternities by the house presidents gryphons take them for freshman sections and presidents of rhc living groups conduct them in their sec tions town students are contacted through alpha lambda omega the town frater nity and the town council students independent of these groups record their preferences in a book which is available at the student activities desk in the u.c on the days the polls are conducted 70 class council creates new standing committees lehigh s class of 7o council's executive committee created five standing committees at the class's first meeting since its reorganlzational meeting last week the committees represent a continuing rest rue ting for the 70 class government the standing committees include the university life safety future projects communications and concert committees according to council vice president bill taylor the life committee will co operate with arcadia and the university goals committee by helping to look into various phases of university life basic ally he added the idea is to keep the class in touch with other organizations within the university three ad hoc committees were also formed the moat important of which is the amendment committee whose purpose is to propose an amendment reducing the number of members needed to be present at a council meeting in order to conduct business also discussed was tha possibility of holding the council meetings in upperclass residences to provide a bettor oppor tunity for members of the class to attend since the class of 70 cabinet decided last spring to change its governmental structure the class executive committee headed by mike morris has aimed at a more balanced for mof c laas governments pep-rally goers turned out in the freshman quad friday night to pay tri bute to the football team and coaches their effort was rewarded with a 59-21 win over drexel see page 12 notice the second part of student involvement at lehigh scheduled to appear in today's issue will appear friday
