lehigh university brown and white bethlehem pa tuesoay october 8 1968 rnmwwmmmm vol bu - ho 5 866.0331 coeducation study urged by ugc by gary sims the university goals committee ugc decided sunday to aend a letter to tee beard of trwioes taking thai it am up a task force to study the merits and possibilities of instituting coeducation at lehigh the board will meet ia the near future the move la part of the commlttee*s final stage which la to put proposals into action a recent poll conducted by the ameri can association of university professors reported that 76.6 per cent of the 177 administration and faculty members pol led favored coeducation at lehigh consideration of the princeton report on coeducation was recommended ta fhe board as background information ln set ting up the task force the princeton report la a detailed report on coeducation currently under study by ugc the report found that many of the bast male students and faculty of both eexea chose a coedu cational school over an all-male instituion university president w deming lewis disclosed at the meeting that 5,000 from the university's presidential discretion fund has beer ms£s available tc •_"_-«. to help them hire consultants lewis said that more money could be obtained if necessary the ugc members which included the aiumm repr esentati ves for the first time decided that each subcommittee will make two specific proposals on its problem areas a week before the dec 8 meeting this way the whole committee can vote on the proposals they decided not to rank fhe problem areas until more information could be obtained but agreed to give coeducation top priority a report containing the progress state ment of ideals letters and correspondence and the proposals of ugc will be published within the next two weeks b & w photo by yewall abba ebah approaches the microphone to accept the honorary doctor of laws degree awarded to him by the university thursday night in grace hall eban was awarded the honorary degree by dr glenn christiansen university provost study of slave narratives stressed by lsu historian by george bancroft the debate over slavery has recently been renewed and few can justify it on moral grounds this was the opinion of dr joseph logsdon assistant professor of history at louisana state university at new orleans when he spoke to a near capacity crowd at packard lab auditorium last night logsdon divided american negro his tory into a three-act play the ante bellum the civil war and the post-war period he posed two questions were the slaveholders capitalists or feudal ba rons and were the slaves docile victims or angry lovers of freedom reading from the narrative of solomon northrup a freeman who was kidnapped into slavery and then regained his freedom logsdon maintained that the slaves were freedom lovers and that many of the slaveholders were feudalists commenting on northrup's narrative " twelve years a slave and the num erous other slave narratives logsdon said that they were an ignored source of history he cited the perception that the slave-authors had concerning the institu tion which bound them quoting northrup logsdon said it isn't he who has stood and looked on who can tell you what sla very is it is he who has endured it is logdson's belief after having studied the slave narratives that the slaves often understood the masters better b w photo by butt jacob blausteih sponsor of the lecture series bearing his name was pre sent over the weekend and introduced abba eban for his first lecture here thursday night joseph logsdon blaustein lecture pullout this issue contains a special eight-page pull-out section covering the events of he 1968 parents weekend these include the activist rally protesting the presence of rotc on campus the schweiker lecture walkout the blaustein lectures and the parents weekend concert photos of all the events are included see slave page 14 notice all students are invited to the second organizational meeting of students for a democratic society sds sunday at 8 p.m ln the uni versity center the room location will be published later in the week students not wanting membership ln sds are wolcome to attend
