support to a combined lafayette lemgh demonstration for coeducation at the annual foot ball game on nov 23 the purpose of the demonstration is to show that oooduuaiioa haa the combined support of the two schools alan b soscmn 69 editor of tho brown and white explained that he had talked wtth tho editor of tha lafayette student newspaper concerning a peaceful demonstration tor coeducation hi stressed that the demonstration must be peeceful to impress the administra tions of the respective colleges see editorial page 2 soecmn worn on to say that tha only foreseeable problem win bo intoxicated freehmen who really like to get smashed on that day hs suggested that pamphlets and other literature be printed oo students faculties alumni trustees and administrations of lafayette and lemgh will understand the purpose of tho dsmonotratloa aldo borln 69 president of arcadia aald thm such a demonstra tion wiu be a great break with tradition he emphasised tho need for an organized demonstration among the suggested ideas for the demonstration are half-time speeches and a peaceful half-time mingling of lehigh and lafayette students continuing on the topic of demonstrations borin reported that ths student life committee ims requested arcadia to formulate rules for ths conduct of demonstrations borln said thm ma own idea waa for arcadia to make a statement on students rights to the u.s congress participat ed in a debate ln packard lab auditorium wednesday mght the candidates incumbent fred b rooney democrat allentown sheriff paul henderson republican and peter cohen common sense ticket debated before what appeared to be a largely anti-viet nam war crowd the candidates were to deal with two question areas american foreign policy and what as a u s congressman each candidate would do for the fifteenth dis trict henderson who spoke first took up the question of local programs which he con sidered the most important of the two question areas he stressed the import ance of being a full-time congressman and claimed that no other profession would take mm away from ms duty of doing so he proposed an administrative office in each of the three counties making up the fifteenth district northampton lemgh and monroe to better inform residents about their representation ln washington he also deplored the use of " red-tape which had stalled economic aid programs for the nation and the lemgh valley area he referred specifically to the head start program which he felt could be better applied to area residents in regard to foreign policy henderson cited " mismanagement by the johnson humphrey administration as the cause of the mistakes in foreign policy the great est of these according to henderson being the vietnam war he blamed presidem johnson for es calating the war and feels that people do not know the truth about the situation henderson promised that as congress man he would be the one to imorm the people of the fifteenth district of the truth cohen a mccarthy supporter and a peace candidate said that after a great deal of study on the vietnam war he was convinced it was morally wrong and that the u s has lost its respect ln the world cohen proposed a demilitarization and neutralization of indo-cmna on the guar antee of the u s and soviet union and policed by the un he claimed that it is impossible for the u s to police the world alone locally cohen deplored the relocation of interstate 78 which originally was to coincide with route 22 he claimed that tms relocation was hurting the poor of the city because they did not have ac cess to the job areas which existed out side the urban areas rooney opened by expressing ms be lief in the moral committment in south vietnam h_r sah thai the r ._■___ mi ml problem was the rape of the people of south vietnam by the communists he gave the examples of the italian invasion of ethiopia and the german invasion of poland of world war ii as parallels and questioned the consequences if 1 the importance ofsecurlng the allocations of this through congress he also pointed out that lemgh um versity had received the benefit of federal and local aid ln expanding its campus under ms tenure aldo borin kirk p pendleton 64 elected to board of trustees by jeff balsai kirk p pendelton 1964 university graduate has been elected to the board of trustees pendleton 29 the youngest man to be elected to the board was in formed of the appointment last thursday his election was announced jointly by m j rathbone president of the um versity trustees and bishop dean t stevenson national president of the le mgh alumni association his election met the criteria of a man out of school " not less than three years but not more than seven which the board used as its point of departure ln creating the new position the board's primary purpose ln mak ing tms move is to lncrease effective channels of communication with lemgh students and young alumni according to pendleton a trustee's primary responsibility is to maintain a modern progressive university to pre serve that wmch la good from ths past and move forward with modern treads pendleton said that the coeduc tion issue fits into tms responsibility it is di lie ult to say whether i am in favor of coeducation or not as i haven't given tho problem consideration yet pm doing research on it now and i intend to talk to students faculty and adrrinisiratier " i am in favor of investigating rotc pendleton said in response to a question if it is in ths realm of reiponsiutiiy of the board of trustees lf the students feel that tms la a problem and if the board teals time ahould be spent here pendleton said i am responsible tothe people who have been ln responsibility longer than i have and added i want to be a middleman between them and the students i will always be available to students who are imerested in anyt___r_s at all in response to a question about student activism m the university pendleton said i
