lehigh university brown and white vol m - no 16 bethlehem pa tuesday november 12 ims 64-0331 building plans given by lewis dr w demlng lt^is university president and monroe j rath bone chairman of the board of trustees amounted yesterday the new btdldlng priority list which lehigh will follow in a three-page statement which prefaced the actual list the large donors who made many of the plans feasible were named the largest donations came from the federal government and large foundations also the statement read in part realizing that it is only the college of engineering that keeps jlehigh going we find it necessary to place a greater emphasis on both the college of arts and science and the college of business and economics it is with this coal uml the following plans wsre organized we hope that lehigh can continue to grow and be of service to america the plans and statement will be released in a booklet currently being prepared by the office of public information the immediate plans include 1 completion of the mart engineering library 2 construction of the sinclair laboratory 3 expansion of the hall of liberal arts see p 5 4 a general expansion of all university facilities using saucon valley see p 1 5 renovation of the university center to include an experimental theater better snack bar bowling alleys etc 6 a multi-level parking area in taylor stadium one member of the board who wished to remain anonymous stated i held my breath when the final plans were submitted to the board for approval i honestly felt that they would not see the necessity for a greater emphasis on areas outside of engineering but they were a bit more progressive than i had previously thought monroe j rath bone w deming lewis university to build hew complex to expand dorm arts facilities monroe j rathbone president of the board of trustees dis closed final plans yesterday to president w demlng lewis for the construction of a multi building complex to be con structed on the saucon valley practice fields over the next two and a half years lewis said that the complex of five buildings including two new dormitories to facilitate le highfs decision to go coed he stated that the trustees had been working on the idea of a three building complex to include a new gymnasium a student union and liberal arts library since the spring of 1966 the plans were expanded last spring to include women's dorms when the coed committee approached the trustees with a feasible plan for making lehigh coed the announcement of the saucon valley expansion scheduled for kirby house in september was delayed to coincide with the coed com mittee's announce rr.ont that le high will be coed next fall rathbone said that the board and the committee have worked closely together since last spring to coordinate their respective goals hie 9.8 million complex will be located on the northeastern section of the saucon valley fields groundbreaking cere monies are scheduled for april i itov and completion of the entire complex is set for sept 1 1971 lewis stated that the dorms would be completed by the opening of school next year the facilities of the complex are extensive the four story aiuuefti union utillulng will cciiiai ii a 4,000 seat auditorium for lec tures concerts and movies a cafeteria a lounge a recreation room and several classrooms and offices the gymnasium will contain a hockey rink a new pool and an arena for basketball and wrestling there will also be several practice courts and ap paratus rooms the rink ths pool and the basketball-wrestling arena will all have large spec tator seating capacities the library which was not in the original plans will con tain approximately half o f the number of volumes as the lind erman library lewis said that the purpose of the proposed liberal arts library is to make room in the linderrnan library for extensive additions in the areas of business and economics the project was started as a result of a committee report on the financial success of weslyan university in the last few years the board of trustees of weslyan has been extremely successful in the financial management of that school raihbou said iimi ihe board main problem areas but added that they will be worked out as fully as possible in idvince lewis refused to comment at the present time on the implica tions of the expansion but said that he will speak students to the sophomore and junior classes the decision to make lehigh a coeducational school came after the board of trustees approved h romlneallon committee's report stating that such a move would greatly benefit lehiffc . . and could be accomplished with minimum financial expenditures francis j wuest chairman of the coed committee stated that the trustees had approved of his committee's report last august but held the announce ment so that they could finalise plans with no pressure from the students or faculty the initial step toward coeducation was taken in february 1967 at that time an ad hoc committee of three faculty members was formed as a result of a panel discussion of the coed question the ad hoc committee arrived at three possible alternatives ror going coed and as of last spring efforts were centered around finding the necessary financial backing for such a move at this time the board of trustees appointed wuest's committee to continue the work of the ad hoc committee from here the coed com mittee and the board of trustees worked closely together in an attempt to coordinate the saucon valley expansion program with the decision to go coed according to samuel h missimer director of admis sions the admissions committee has already begun plans for an intensive recruiting program he said that he foresees several difficulties in attracting 300 well enrollment of the university wuest said that a published report of all phases of the cotd committee's work will to released the second week in december he stated that the booklet will include not only the text of the committee's report to the board but also a specific evaluation of »>•»•«*« that coeducation will have on lehlgh exam schedule the exam schedule for the fall semester appears on page 4 of the br&mn and white mi james wagner university regis trar gave the listing to the paper yesterday he said he will have mimeo graphed copies for all living groups and bulletin boards either tomorrow afternoon or thursday morning wagner stressed that the schedule will have to he revised in parts to com pensate for its early issuance corrections will be issued early in december
