doug griffes were elected to offices of arcadia this week farsone running for the presidency defeated bob deltz by 1754 points and tony turn ml nello by 2143 points norm monhait aad bill kuhn had the closest race in tbe election with monhait winning the office ofvlco-proeideat by 118 points over bill kuhn and 2soo over carl hauptli bruce berzin won the position of recording secretary with 33s points mure than bob rege doug griffes won by a margin of 312 points over ma opponent rich hendricks jell parka chairman of ths arcadia administration committee termed this year's experiment of having most unique situation of lehigh in contrast to other institutions was the unusual proportion of students who are forced to live in private apartments when there is no more room left in the university sponsored residence halls he also condemned the situation where fraternities had empty beds in their houses st the same time brown said that he did not think that a system where freshmen were separated from the rest of the university was a healthy one he said segregating freshmen tends to hold over the high-school at mosphere and does not give the incoming student a chance to cross the bridge from adolescent to mature life in the greatest degree brown stated that the basic question to be considered is what effect residence has on intellectual and education development the university of micmgan psychology professor said that colleges today are faced with a different type of student than in former times hs is more mature more informed more concerned with the world around mm brown said that generally campuses of the 1950*8 were apathetic and completely material oriented but in the present de apathy blamed for canceling of frosh parads the annual freehmea pejama parade la off at le-.it for this year according to harry sobel a member of the arcadia lafayette weekend committee u cited a number of reasons the main one being lack of interest on ths part of the fresh men administration and alumni sobel also said that ths moravian girls were not tn favor of the parade aad tnst if tha freshmen did march the girls would respond by pulling down their window shades and remaining inside main hall it waa feared that this would cause a riot on the part of the frosh tms year sobel said the freshmen are not too interested in lafayette week end and there is no reason for the vnl versity to stick its neck out fcy spon soring ths parade he added that ths general feeling is that the tradition la an increase in soph valentines blamed on attendance rules the number of valentines received by tbe class of 71 this semester is 50 per cent greater than that received by the class of 70 during the fall semester last year norm monhait 70 revealed tms at wednesday's arcadia meeting monhait said that the educational policy committee blames tms increase on the new attendance rifles this year it is the student excluding freshmen who must take the initiative to attend class and be prepared for class in previous years students had to attend class and were hewed only three con secutive absences before they were reported to the administration in the three basic engineering courses physics 3 math 23 and mechanics i the issuance of valentines has increased 200-300 per cent monhait said there is evidence that in the physics course attendance has dropped substantially compared to the same period last year class preparedness is also below its past level he stressed that lt is the students responsibility to fulfill the responsibiltles that accompnay those regulations monhait also initiated discussion on the bias that is prevalent in the arcadia report concerning academic credit for rotc the majority agreed that the report was concerned primarily with the army formally leaves ifc by bill alpert tau delta phi's petition to leave the interfraternity council ifc was accepted by a vote of 23-7 tuesday a majority vote was needed for approval delta tau delta's appeal of an earlier conviction of baaing was rejected delta tau delta had been convicted of hazing its pledges by forcing them to run the mil the charges of hazing had been made against delta tau delta by the fact finding committee of ifc committee chairman donald w karn 89 presented the case to the ifc to reverse the decision tau delta needed a two thirds majority the conviction carried with it a suspension of women guest privileges until dec 16 with the exception of lafayette weekend the appealing house made clear that lt was not only appeal ing the judiciary action but also the conviction itself the vote was taken after tau delfs resignation wmch left only 30 members in ifc also the appealing house could not cast a vote hence 20 votes would have been necessary for the appeal to have been successful delta tau delta received 19 votes in its favor while nine members of the council voted againat them according to russell w smith 69 secretary of ifc " tms was a precedent case which defines running the mil as hazing in other business the pledging committee reported that it will conduct a confidential house survey on jiedjß t policy committee chair man barry j schimpf ss announced an open meeting for all pledge masters and officers which took place at ksppe sigma yesterday at 7 p.m it was also noted that the committee is composing a totter to freshman parents wmch contains the ifc positions oa pledging smith said that a report by the human rights committee will be completed soon this report will define discriminatory practices and discuss how they are
