bluesy folk singer ricme havens sad tha relatively unknown new york rock and roll ensemble will perform ia the cornell wrestling weekend concert saturday night in grace hall havens originally from mew york city did ths village csflhe house scene for four or five years before he began to get any recognition in the fall of 1966 with the release of ms first album entitled mixed bag on verve-folkways his career began to pick up momentum within the last year he has appeared on many national television programs and been booked for top concerts across the country haven's style is simple but intense his husky yet soothm voice creates a rapport early in a performance enabling mm to communicate with me awheaees very well bom in tha bedford-stuyvesant ghetto havana takes much of ms original material from ms experiences there no oas ever sake what ttfs like to be black that's how irrelevant it la he commented so he tries to tell people what it is like havens also draws heavily from other contemporary artists on ms last album a two-record set on verve-folkways entitled richard c havens 1983 that was just released he has a dylan song 1 pity the poor i m migrant " a oonovon tune wear your love like heaven snd three beatles numbers strawberry fields forever lady madonna and a little help from my friends his beatles renditions are particularly fine the new york rock and roll ensemble nyrre is just comimr into ita w they have been together since the spring of 1967 but just recently have been getting the national television appearances their music is clean knowledgeable and good three of its members are students at the julllard school of music and the other two are very good grass roots rock and roll musicians the nyrre composes and arranges almost all its own material occasion richie havens verve folkways recording star will perform at the class of 71 concert saturday night along with the new york rock and roll ensemble some of havens selections includa i pity tha peer immigrant and strawberry fields forever brown cites 4 alternatives in residence system report in his report on the university resi dence system issued to the university goals committee on sunday dr donald r brown said his observations whi prob ably not reveal any insights into lehigh's problems which have not already been expressed the expert from the university of michigan noted that lehigh is probably unique in the pervasiveness of selectiv ity in living its groups and that with the present controversy it clearly re presents a problem for lehigh one of the four possible solutions pro posed by dr brown is a stratified ran dom process of selection on an actuarial basis he feels that a few variables could replace the job now being done by brief unstructured interviews i rush ing interviewing under ideal conditions with trained personnel is a faculty selection mechanism at best he said his next suggestion is a living system used at bowdoin and vassar the seniors are brought together in s senior center in a 14-story building tne freshmen are rushed immediately which amounts to random selection the seniors all live in the senior center with resident fel lows and an academic program this puts the first three years together and makes the seniors more independent his third alternative is purely ran dom selection and assignment by the university encouragement of private enterprises to build off-campus housing for seniors and graduate students is his sixth alterna tive dr brown believes that a university should consciously enlarge the academic concerns in all aspects of university life the lntergatian of the academic program into the residence system should be prom inent in planning any new residence unit he said it should be more than just a place to sleep drink swap stories etc " individuals are often taken from homes student poll will determine length of spring houseparty by bill alpert university students will decide the length of spring houseparty according to roger l tresolini 70 chairman of the arcadia committee on social codes depending on the results of a poll tresolini will send to living group presidents tomorrow it will decide whether the weekend will be one or two days parr is dean of student life tresolini said that no matter what the decision of the student body is concerning the length of the weekend it will still be pretty much of a test weekend he hopes to have the result of his poll by monday tresolini is waiting to send the questionnaire until the interfraternity council decides at its meeting next tuesday whether it will combine ifc weekend with house party the proposal to combine weekends will be tmtde at the ineeting by sandy robinson 69 ifc concert chairman according to robinson the proposal has a good chance for passage the class of 70 has indicated a willingness to carry out this action if it retains control of the concert robinson noted that the combination will not conflict wtth the activities of greek week since they will occur on friday and saturday afternoon when little is taking place during the conventional houseparty tresolini said that there will be many changes including the status of the inspection teams however he continued no matter what the length of the weekend some of the detaile will have to remain the same including hill passes and the hiring of plnkerton police tresolini said that the delay tn taking the poll was because he wants to give students complete information about ifc weekend he said that the class of 70 has not been able to sign a concert group yet because they do not have a definite date for houseparty bond talk canceled by newman club by jeff balsai julian bond's lecture scheduled for monday night in grace hall was cancel led by the university's newman associ ation the group sponsoring the talk the cancellation was due to information they received that bond a georgia state legislator did not appear for a speaking engagement at bucks county community college earlier monday afternoon he was to have lectured on contemporary politics people arriving at grace hall before the lecture was scheduled to begin found a sign on the door reading the julian bond lecture has been cancelled a large number of peoplo including students and residents of bethlehem read the sign and walked away according to father francis j.sullivan advisor of the newman association bond's engagement here was cancelled at 5 p.m after word was received from bucks county community college that he did not appear for his scheduled lecture there sullivan said the faculty member who was to drive bond tn bethlehem phoned the newman association with tha information sullivan stated that the airlines and the lecture agency handling bond's speak ing engagements were both checked the lecture agency said there was no reason to believe that bond would not come to bethlehem noted sullivan hut the new man association decided to cancel the engagement this was done to prevent grace hall being filled and then not having a speaker he added we heard nothing from bond said sullivan but there was no word that he would not arrive to deliver the lecture the way things looked sullivan noted it was reasonable to believe that bond would not appear as there was no definite confirmation of his engagement at the university after his failure to appear at bucks county community college according to cas*y cogut chairman of the forum for visiting lecturers committee through which the newman association's lactura was cleared bond's lecture
