lehigh university brown and white vol 00 â– no 29 bethlehem pa february 11 1969 040-0331 new provost outlines views stresses arts and business by alan b soschtn dr albert c zettlemoyer recently appointed to the post of vice president and provost at tte university in a brown and white interview expressed tte desire to increase the relevance of tte couege of arts and science and the couege of busi ness and economics zettlemoyer who previously teld the position of vice president ln charge of re search spoke cautiously emphasizing tte fact that he _____ been in hia new office only for a short time as the administrator ln charge of approving iui appointments to the instructional staff te voiced some interest in trying to recruit black per sonnel for lehigh s faculty he said that the university is directing efforts in this area but that it ls up to each department to take initiative when asked about the status of teach ers who have received poor ratings in the course evaluation booklet the provost said teacher evaluation ls the duty of tte de partment concerned as the chief administrative officer of academic programs zettlemoyer will be ln charge of the institution of new pro grams such as urban studies and black studies zettlemoyer cited the center for business economics and urban studies the high immediate relevance hir and creative concepts courses as proof that lehigh is concerned with improving the curricula of the arts college the urban studies program started with an interdisciplinary course in urban af fairs and will expand when tte history government and social relations depart ments each add a staff member who ls concerned with tte urban scene zettlemoyer said tms program wiu directly improve tte salience of the arts college he believes ttet another center should be developed and that money will be appropriated to tms end during tte next university fund raising drive on tte subject of academic credit for rotc and academic credit in general tte provost explained that lt was tne city of the educational policy committee to determine the credit guidelines as for rotc zettlemoyer said that lehigh has operated for some time with the philo sophy which yale just adopted that rotc is an extra-curricular activity however at lemgh one still gets academic credit and money during the junior and senior years of rotc the provost was silent on the idea of coeducation at lehigh he deferred com ment until the coed committee releases its findings zettlemoyer said there are both positive and negative aspects to be dealt with when considering the feasi bility of coeducation bethlehem firemen were on hand in case of fire in tlte elngie-ear crash at sayre park gate saturday night no one was injured in the crash see story on page 1 1 . no ono injured in sayre pork auto accident a sophomore and a freshman escaped without injuries saturday night when tte car ttey were in crashed into two trees between sigma nu and taylor hall peter hondru 71 and tom wells 72 were treated and released at st luke's hospital tte campus police said that hondru lost control of ms car as te came down tte mu of sayre park and crashed into two trees on tte rigm side of the road police said that tte road was dry there was no esti_.__.te cf tte damages although tte car was demolished no charges have been filed and tte police are stiu investigating new residences to cost 7 million tte pennsylvania higher education facilities authority approved last wed nesday tax exempt financing of 7,1 80,000 for now resident complexes at tte univer sity a new undergraduate complex tar b students similar to tte centennial com plex is to be bunt on upper iayior field along with a separate building tar extension of tte university dining ser vices the new dining hall win serve 700 stu dents per meal cafeteria style or up to 400 students at banquets combined costs tar tte complex is placed at 04 ffrtfflfr alao planned le a housing project tar graduate students in tte monocacy qroek urban renewal area under tha hill-to au bridge tte first phase ct tma pro ject will include iso houalng unite tee married and single graduate students both in arc hi tactual style and fac iii ties construction wii begin in may and tte dorms should be completed by the fall of 1070 glick mentioned ttet tte project has been under consideration for several them redone presumably by the same group of freshmen that did tha original decoration tn slogans included criticism on both university and national issues .._ goals committee polls students on residences the university goals committee is con ducting a survey of why students choose to live where they do a random sample of upper class stu dents in residence haus and rraterniries have received a questionnaire and all stu dents who could be identified as living cir ca mpus but not at home have also received a copy a problem in distributing the question naire to off-campus students ls that a number of the students have on campus mailing addresses and thus cannot be identified as off-campus students if you live off-campus but not at home and have not received a residence prefer ence questionnaires pick one up at either the student activities desk in the univer sity center or room 8 of price hall selectivity at u is examined in wlrn talk by dee mcallister the legal basis tar selectivity ln university owned housing waa brought into question by clarence campbeli dean of residence duiing a panel discussion friday on selectivity between administra tion fi gures and student leaders sponsored by sure tte talk waa broadcast over wlrn discussing the position of the outs campbell told about a recent incident where a student came to him and asked whether te would be able to get a room ln tte centennial houses when campbell told mm that approval of his request waa doomful tha student asked what legal right a private group tea to exclude mm from housing owned by tte university tte deen thought ttet te ted a valid point continuing on the subject campbell said that some students have benefitted from tte present system however in response to a question from rhc viae
