brown and white imffltifwttnmwmttiiimtxm vol 79 « no 43 bethlehem pa tuesday april 16 ub b**-033l students protest at lab dedication by deb mcallister usually at college ground breaking ceremonies for a new building only the board of trustees administration and other dignitaries take part but at the ground breaking for the 1.7 million francis mac donald sinclair memorial laboratory thursday morning a group of students attended and came not to celebrate but to complain a few minutes before the ceremony began at 11:30 a.m about 20 student pickets came into view down adams street between morton street and packer avenue they carried signs such as " human cats not technocrats 1 the majority of the demonstrators were gryphons and frosh who were also almost all arts men the concensus of the pickets seemed not to criticise spe cifically the building of the laboratory but saw the ceremony as an opportunity to generally express concern at the over emphasis of engineering on campus the high point of the demonstration came when university president w deming lewis came to reproach the pickets for their action he said that although they had a perfect right to demonstrate their action was " discour teous and bad manners to the donors of the laboratory lewis continued by saying that the building of the laboratory does not " take away from the arts school and pointed out the new liberal arts building now in construction as an example of the uni versity's attention to the arts the demonstrators claimed that they had no leaders and that they had formed spontaneously by word of mouth most said that it all started wednesday night when freshmen and gryphons eating dinner in the johnson room of the univer sity center learned that participants in the ground breaking would be eating lunch there after the ceremony other speakers at the ceremony besides or lewis were edward a curtis vie chairman of the trustees howard j soriano president of sinclair and valentine co weldon r coete tie president of sun chemical corp mid donald b morrison president of morri son printing ink co the construction of the laboratory is being financed by the !*»• mrs jennie h sinclair whose will toft 700,000 to lemgh for construction of the laboratory in honor of her husband a usoe grant of 490,000 and 350,000 in industrial grants and gifts from printing ink manufacturing companies and other research sponsors bjk w photo by butt goldwater discuses johnson viet policy by marty marasco we should have taken stronger military action and we would have pre vented korea and viet nam 1 said barry goldwater in a lecture in grace rail last night goldwater the republican nominee for president in 1064 spoke before a crowd estimated at more than 2100 people gomwater opened the lecture with a short 20 minute talk on viet nam and our foreign policy in general then spent the remaining 4b minutes answering question from the audience in his remarks on viet nam goldwater said the problem was that we did not exercise the power we have shown before he felt that the escalation of the war had come too late at one point in thj evening the ex-senator quipped president johnson should have gotten with my policies sooner i just couldn't make mm listen however goldwater said we must not pull out of viet nam bow we are there because of a promise mad by three presidents we have the honor of the presidency and the honor the people of the united states to uphold he said gomwater continued we can argue with the way the president conducts the war » we can disagree with the war but it is our duty to back toe president in whatever he is doing while we are at war he concluded nts opening remarks oy saying if we lost in viet nam ii «• pull out in a dishonorable way we will have the question of what we are going to do about one two or 10 other countries in asia this is indeed an important question speaking on the progress of the war goldwater said we are winning and we are winning at a greater clip than we realise asked about the hopes he has for present bany goldwater in grace hall wednesday night see stronger page 6
